An off-road builder in West Des Moines called us last fall about car lift parts for his shop lift, which he’d bought from another builder two states over. He builds overlanding rigs — 4Runners, Tacomas, the occasional lifted Suburban — and does his own oil changes, differential service, and skid-plate work between customer builds. The lift he inherited was a Rotary SPOA10 with the ALI Gold decal still on the column, which was the entire reason he bought it. This article is the case study of what that lift needed to get back to gold-cert-worthy condition, and why ALI Gold matters for a shop that builds vehicles for customers who ask hard questions about safety.

What ALI Gold actually certifies
The Automotive Lift Institute Gold label means the lift, in its as-manufactured configuration, was third-party tested to ANSI/ALI ALCTV. The label is issued to a specific model with specific components — arms, cables, safety systems, power unit — and it stops applying the moment any of those components are substituted for a non-OEM part. That’s the piece most shop owners miss. If your Rotary SPOA10 has ALI Gold and you replace the cables with a generic aftermarket set, your lift is no longer ALI-certified. That doesn’t make it unsafe if the aftermarket cable is dimensionally correct and rated for capacity, but you lose the label and any insurance benefit that goes with it.
For a shop doing customer builds, the label matters. Off-road customers ask about lift certification more than any other customer segment in our experience — they’ve read enough forum arguments about garage-lift accidents to know what to ask. Being able to point at the ALI Gold decal is a real conversation-closer. That’s why our West Des Moines builder was willing to spend more on OEM car lift parts to preserve his cert. Aftermarket would have been thirty percent cheaper and mechanically equivalent for cables and sheaves, but he’d have lost the decal and the story that goes with it.
Inspecting a used ALI Gold lift for parts needs
We drove to West Des Moines and inspected the lift on-site. That’s non-negotiable for an ALI Gold refurb because we have to document component condition before we quote parts. The Rotary SPOA10 he bought was ten years old with light shop use. The cables measured just past the OEM tolerance for stretch, the sheaves had visible groove wear but no through-cut, and the arm restraints were within spec but stiff from lack of use. The safety pawls engaged cleanly and the column notches were unpeened. Overall, a mid-life refurb candidate that would come back to full spec with a targeted parts order.
The power unit was the surprise. Somebody along the way had swapped the OEM Rotary unit for a generic 220V pump with a mismatched motor. Mechanically it worked, but the moment we saw it we knew ALI cert had been broken years before our customer bought the lift. We told him honestly. He had two paths — accept the broken cert and refurbish everything else, or restore the OEM power unit and reclaim the cert. He picked the OEM restoration because his customer story depended on it. The car lift parts we ordered for the West Des Moines build
The full quote came in four groups. Group one, safety-critical: new arm restraint pins and springs (as a preventive measure since the springs had lost temper from disuse), fresh safety-cable pull grips, and a slack-cable safety switch replacement. Group two, structural wear: OEM Rotary cables cut to SPOA10 spec, four new sheaves with grease fittings, and new arm pin bushings. Group three, hydraulic: the OEM Rotary power unit with fresh fluid, new hoses front and back, and cylinder seal kits for both columns as a precaution given the ten-year age. Group four, cosmetic and functional: fresh column decals including the ALI Gold sticker, new arm pads, and a fresh coat of powder-coat on the arms.
Total invested was in the mid five figures. That’s more than most owner-operator shops would spend on car lift parts for a used lift, but the story it bought — a fully OEM ALI Gold refurbished Rotary SPOA10 in a customer-facing overlanding shop — was worth it in his business math. We documented every part with a photo before and after installation. That documentation went into a binder that lives on the shop’s front counter, and he shows it to every customer who asks about lift safety. That’s the payoff of doing the refurb properly instead of piecemeal.
Oil-change duty cycle and what it demands
Oil changes and quick fluid service are the highest-cycle-count work a two-post lift sees. Every drain, every filter swap, every diff-fluid change is another up-cycle and down-cycle on the cables, sheaves, safety pawls, and power unit. Shops that do fifteen or twenty oil changes a week between their own build work will burn through car lift parts faster than shops that do two lifts a day for long transmission or engine work. Cable stretch is the wear item we see most often on high-cycle lifts. Safety-pawl teeth are second. Power-unit motor bearings are third.
For an overlanding shop doing five to ten oil changes a week alongside four to six major build lifts, cycle count is moderate. Our West Des Moines builder tracks his lift usage and told us he averages about a dozen up-cycles per working day. That’s a nine-year cable life expectancy at the OEM stretch tolerance, which meant his ten-year-old cables were exactly on time for replacement. Nothing surprising, nothing early. High-cycle shops should plan cable replacement at seven years, sheave inspection annually, and power-unit fluid every 24 months. Low-cycle shops can stretch cables to twelve years, but we still recommend annual sheave inspection because dust and dirt accumulate in the grooves regardless of cycle count.
Overlanding builds put unusual loads on a two-post
Standard passenger-car service loads a two-post lift within its design parameters. Overlanding builds do not. When you’re wrenching on a customer 4Runner with a full roof rack, dual spare tires, and a rear bumper carrier, you’re 200-400 lbs heavier than the same truck was from the factory. And that weight is distributed asymmetrically — high in the roof line, heavy in the rear. Your arm restraints and pad placement have to compensate. Our West Des Moines shop learned this the hard way on his first build, when a fully-loaded Tacoma tried to walk off the pads during a skid-plate install. Nothing broke, but the arms shifted and the safety pawls did their job.
Since then he uses truck adapters on every build vehicle, engages arm restraints before he touches the vehicle, and never leaves the shop with a vehicle at working height. Those disciplines are as much about the mechanic’s habits as they are about the car lift parts themselves, but they inform which parts we recommend. For overlanding shops we always quote heavier-duty arm pin bushings, upgrade the arm pads to the extended-life polymer, and recommend a spare set of pads on the shelf because they wear faster under uneven loads. If you build vehicles that are heavier than stock, budget for parts consumption that’s higher than a factory-spec shop.
Why we insist on OEM parts for cert lifts
Aftermarket car lift parts are fine for a shop that isn’t chasing ALI certification. We sell aftermarket cables, sheaves, and pins for the shops that don’t care about the label, and they’re often better value than OEM for a private-service shop. But when the customer-facing story depends on the cert, aftermarket is a false economy. We won’t ship aftermarket cables to a customer who’s told us they want to keep the ALI Gold label. That’s a hard line for us. It protects the customer and it protects our reputation as a certified-lift specialist in the Iowa market.
The other reason to insist on OEM is traceability. Every OEM part comes with a serial and a batch number. If we ever have to look up a component’s history — because of a recall, because of a shop incident, because of an insurance audit — we can. Aftermarket parts are effectively anonymous. They may be mechanically excellent, but there’s no chain of custody. For a shop that’s building vehicles for customers and might someday get asked hard questions about safety practices, that chain of custody is worth the OEM premium. Our West Des Moines builder saw it the same way. Every part in his lift has paperwork. Every paper is in the binder.
What the lift looks like today, one year later
One year after the refurb, the West Des Moines shop’s Rotary SPOA10 is running clean. He sends us photos every six months for our records. Cables measured back to just-past-new stretch, which is normal seating stretch and stops after the first thousand cycles. Sheaves are still crisp with no visible groove wear. The OEM power unit has cycled about 2,000 times with no leaks. Arm restraints and safety pawls function to spec. He’s put about a dozen customer builds through the lift and probably four hundred oil changes for local customers who saw his shop from the road and stopped in.
His ALI Gold label is still on the column and it’s still valid because every replacement part came from Rotary with paperwork. That’s a car lift parts investment that paid for itself in customer trust within the first six months. He tells us he’s had three prospective customers cite the lift specifically when they picked his shop over a competitor’s. We don’t often measure marketing ROI on parts orders, but this one worked. If you’re an off-road or overlanding builder considering a lift refurb, treat it as a marketing investment as much as a mechanical one. The customers coming to you for a $30,000 rig want to see a $30,000 shop.
