An RV and trailer service shop in Marion took delivery of a new two-post lift last summer, and by early winter they were calling us for their first serious car lift parts order. It wasn’t a warranty issue or a wear-item replacement. It was the reality of the first year of ownership catching up with them: a CV axle job on a customer’s Class B RV that pushed the lift closer to its edges than they’d planned, and a couple of small maintenance items the factory manual didn’t emphasize as strongly as it should have. Why an RV shop bought a two-post instead of a four-post
Most RV service shops default to four-post drive-on lifts because RVs are long, heavy, and awkward to position on two-post arms. Our Marion RV shop went a different direction. They picked a Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric two-post because their bread-and-butter work is CV axles, U-joints, and underbody service on Class B and Class C RVs — vehicles small enough to fit a passenger-car two-post but big enough that a four-post would have been overkill. The two-post gives them full underbody access, which a four-post’s drive-on runways block. For a shop that spends more time under the vehicle than moving it around, the two-post was the right call.
The tradeoff is loading. RVs need careful pad placement because their factory lift points are shorter than a car’s. Truck adapters — steel extensions that raise the pad several inches — solve the geometry, and the Marion shop budgeted for a full set from install day. That was their first serious car lift parts order after the lift itself. We shipped four steel adapters at three-inch and five-inch heights, plus a matched pair of rubber-topped pads for delicate underbody surfaces. Total was under $600. Small money compared to the lift, and it made the difference between an RV shop that could handle Class B service and one that couldn’t.
Installation day and the ALI Gold decal
Install day was a full Thursday. Our crew arrived early with the lift, the anchor kit, the power unit, and the ALI Gold decal set. Concrete was already cured (the shop had poured a fresh six-inch pad three months earlier in preparation), the electrical drop was in place, and the ceiling clearance measured 156 inches — well over the 148-inch minimum for a 10K overhead two-post. The install itself took about six hours: anchor the columns, install the overhead crossbar, run the cables, wire the power unit, cycle-test empty three times, cycle-test loaded three times, and stick the ALI Gold decal on the driver-side column.
The ALI Gold decal matters more for RV shops than most owners realize. Class B and Class C RV customers are older on average, more safety-conscious, and often ask about lift certification before they hand over the keys to a $150,000 vehicle. The Marion shop has told us the decal has closed at least two customer conversations for them in the first year — customers who were shopping multiple shops picked them because the decal was visible in the bay. That’s marketing ROI on a piece of paper. The car lift parts investment to keep the cert current — OEM cables, sheaves, power-unit components — is straightforward when the customer conversation depends on the decal.
First month: settling stretch and first cable checks
Every new two-post cable stretches slightly in the first thousand cycles. Factory cables settle in from a “just installed” length to a “seated” length as the cable’s individual strands lay against each other under load. That settling is normal and predictable. What surprises new owners is how much attention it demands in the first month. We told the Marion shop to expect three cable checks in the first month — week one, week two, and week four — and to expect small tension adjustments at each check. They followed the schedule.
By the end of the first month the cables had seated within spec and the tension adjustments were done. From that point forward, monthly cable checks are enough. The shop asked us during the first-month check whether they needed to order backup cables just in case. We told them no — the seating stretch is normal and healthy, not a sign the cables are failing. Backup cables are a car lift parts investment better made at year three or four, when you’re closer to actual replacement territory. Ordering them at month one just ties up cash in inventory that will sit for years. CV axle work on a Class B RV
The first serious job that pushed the lift was a CV axle replacement on a Sprinter-based Class B in October. The Class B weighed just under 9,000 pounds curb weight, and with the customer’s full water and fuel tanks it was probably 9,500 on the pads. That’s within the 10K lift’s capacity but close to the edge, and the shop’s mechanics were appropriately cautious. The CV axle job itself was routine — pull the wheel, disconnect the tie rod and lower ball joint, unhook the ABS sensor, pull the axle, transfer boots to a new axle, reinstall. What wasn’t routine was the arm placement on the RV frame.
Class B frames don’t have the same pinch-weld lift points that passenger cars do. The lift points are behind the front wheels and forward of the rear wheels, farther apart than a typical passenger car and lower to the ground. Standard arm pads with rubber tops would have contacted painted body panels, which would have chipped the paint at best and dented the panel at worst. The truck adapters they’d bought at install were exactly for this scenario. With the adapters, the pads met the factory lift points cleanly and the RV sat level at working height. First serious CV axle job on the new lift, first real proof that the truck adapters were worth the initial order. Every subsequent Class B and Class C job used the same adapter setup.
Car lift parts we shipped for the axle job
The axle job itself didn’t require lift-specific car lift parts — that was a vehicle-parts order for the CV axle assembly, boots, and hardware. What the shop needed from us during the same conversation was two lift-related items: an additional set of truck adapters at seven-inch height (for taller RVs they’d started booking), and a spare arm-pad set in polyurethane. The seven-inch adapters cover Class C RVs with higher lift points than Class B. The polyurethane arm pads replace rubber for high-traffic use and last three times longer under repeated adapter contact.
Total order was in the low four-figure range and shipped within a week. The shop added the items to their spares shelf, and the seven-inch adapters saw first use two months later on a Class C job that came in unexpectedly. Without the pre-purchase, that job would have waited a week for shipping. With the pre-purchase, they turned the work same-day and captured the customer permanently. That’s the return on stocking spares that make sense for your specific work. Not everything belongs on the shelf, but the items that unlock capability — like taller adapters for taller vehicles — usually do. The shop paid for both items in one CV axle job’s labor billing.
Six-month service: what the lift needed
Six months after install we scheduled a service call with the Marion RV shop to inspect everything and change hydraulic fluid. What we found was normal for a moderately busy lift: cables seated and stable, sheaves clean, safety pawls engaging cleanly, arm restraints tight, anchor bolts holding torque. The one item that surprised us was the arm-pad wear on the polyurethane set — the shop was doing more RV work than we’d projected and the pads had visible wear at the adapter contact points after only six months. We recommended a second set of polyurethane pads and told them to rotate the sets so no single pad saw continuous heavy use.
Beyond pads, the six-month service found one hose fitting weeping at the power unit and one cable clip loose at the top of the driver-side column. Neither was safety-critical but both got fixed on the service call. Total service-call time was about two hours plus travel. Total parts consumed: one hose fitting (a few dollars), one cable clip (also a few dollars), and the recommendation for the second pad set (which shipped separately). The six-month service is the pattern we recommend for every new lift in its first year — one visit to catch anything the customer might have missed, and to build the mechanic-to-owner relationship for future car lift parts orders.
Twelve-month recap and lessons learned
Twelve months in, the Marion RV shop’s Rotary SPOA10 is running well. Cables are still within factory-new stretch tolerance. Sheaves show no visible groove wear. Safety systems engage on every notch. The ALI Gold decal is still on the column and still legitimate because every part in the lift is OEM. The shop has cycled the lift approximately 1,800 times in the first year — moderate use, well within design tolerance. Total spent on parts and accessories in year one was roughly $2,500 across the initial adapter order, the axle-job additions, the second pad set, and a few small line items.
Their lessons learned, in their own words: buy the truck adapters at install day, not after your first RV job; keep at least one spare arm-pad set on the shelf; do the six-month service call whether you think you need it or not; and pay attention to the settling stretch in month one so you build the habit of monthly cable checks. Those four habits, they say, are the reason year one went smoothly and year two is looking similarly clean.
