A CV axle or half-shaft job is a wheels-off, suspension-loaded operation until the axle nut comes free, then wheels-hanging so you can pop the inner joint out of the transaxle. That means the lift needs to do two things well: hold the vehicle at a steady chest-high work height for the wheel-off portion, and let the arms carry the full weight with no interference near the front subframe. A four-post is wrong here because the tires stay loaded, and a scissor is wrong because the pads get in the way of the tie-rod and knuckle you need to reach.
The right car lift for CV work is a full-rise two-post with arms that can restrain properly at the OEM lift points and enough drive-thru width that a modern crossover fits without an extension. Symmetric or asymmetric both work, though for the mixed sedan-and-truck mix that a Quad Cities general shop sees, asymmetric wins slightly on ergonomics. What matters more than the configuration name is the actual arm geometry, meaning how far the pad reaches under the rocker before the arm assembly starts blocking your access to the knuckle and the axle nut.
Model spec comparison: Rotary SPO12 versus Challenger CL10
These two car lift models are the ones we bring to a Quad Cities pro-shop conversation because they cover the realistic range for a general shop upgrade. The Rotary SPO12 is a 12,000 lb asymmetric two-post with a rise around 74 inches, three-stage front arms, and a symmetric-capable arm set that swings 30 inches at the shortest configuration. The Challenger CL10 is a 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post that many independent shops already know, with similar rise, three-stage front arms, and a well-known dual-hydraulic power system that has been shipping for a long time.
On capacity alone the SPO12 wins for shops that occasionally see a three-quarter-ton pickup. The extra 2,000 lb of margin means less thinking about weight before you spot the arms on a heavy vehicle. The CL10 wins on price and on the sheer volume of installed units, which means every parts store from Peoria to Cedar Rapids can get the common wear parts across the counter. For CV axle work specifically, either model clears the front subframe fine. The differentiator ends up being which parts network is easier to lean on when a locking latch pin snaps at 5 pm on a Friday afternoon.
Drive-thru width and arm swing: the numbers that matter
Drive-thru clearance between the columns is where a lot of shops trip themselves up during a purchase. The SPO12 offers roughly 100 inches column-to-column with about 132 inches inside the columns. The CL10 sits close but slightly narrower on the outside dimension. For a Quad Cities pro shop that regularly sees Ford Super Duty crew cabs, that inside dimension needs to be wide enough for the folded mirrors to clear the column paint. Both models handle it in practice, but the SPO12’s slightly wider stance leaves noticeably more elbow room on the biggest trucks.
Arm swing is the other dimension pros care about during a jobs-per-day comparison. The SPO12’s front arms swing to a minimum reach of about 28 inches, meaning you can spot short-wheelbase cars without kicking them halfway across the bay. The CL10 swings similar. What both share, and what cheaper import car lift models often fail at, is a symmetric arm option, meaning the ability to reconfigure the front and rear arms to lift a vehicle whose center of gravity is not favorable for asymmetric. For CV work that is rare, but for a shop that also drops transmissions, symmetric-capable is worth the small upcharge.
Symmetric versus asymmetric for a mixed-vehicle bay
Ninety percent of what a Quad Cities general shop lifts is passenger cars and light trucks, so asymmetric configuration is the right default for that mix. The columns tilt about 30 degrees so the door swing clears the column, which matters when your tech is climbing in to release the parking brake or grab a code reader off the seat. Symmetric configuration keeps the columns perpendicular, which is what you want for full-frame trucks and long-wheelbase work where the center of gravity sits farther back on the chassis.
The pragmatic reality is that most modern two-post car lift models are dual-mode. The arms can be reconfigured between symmetric and asymmetric without changing the columns themselves. So your choice at purchase is really about the default arm configuration you want your techs to grab most often without thinking about it. For CV axle and half-shaft work on cars and unibody SUVs, asymmetric is the answer nine times out of ten. If your bay does more Sprinter and box-truck work than car work, we lean symmetric. When we scope a shop we ask what actually rolls in on a Tuesday morning, not what the shop wants to say it lifts on its brochure.
Locking heights and where the lock-clicks land
Both car lift models step-lock every three to four inches through the rise. What matters for CV work is whether one of the lock positions lands at your techs’ natural work height, usually around 44 to 48 inches of pad height for wheels-off work on a passenger car. If the closest lock is at 40 or 52 inches, your tech is either stooping or reaching. Over a full day of half-shafts that ergonomics penalty adds up to real minutes off the flag-hour clock.
We measure this on site during install and adjust the mount so the lock positions land where your work happens most often. It sounds like a small thing until you watch a tech do fifteen wheel-off jobs in a row and multiply the seconds. Rotary’s lock spacing tends to be slightly finer through the working range. Challenger’s spacing is close but slightly coarser between clicks. Neither is wrong, but if your shop is committed to CV and half-shaft as bread-and-butter service, we usually recommend the Rotary spacing for its finer positions. It is one of those details that never shows up in a spec sheet.
Parts and warranty behind each model number
A car lift is only as useful as the parts network behind it. Rotary maintains a full parts catalog going back decades on the SPO family, and their warranty on the SPO12 is currently five years structural and two years on hydraulic components. Challenger’s parts network is similarly deep and their warranty covers structural for the life of the unit under original ownership with two-year hydraulic coverage. On paper those are close to identical positions in the market.
What matters practically is response time when something breaks.
