We spent a full afternoon last fall walking a third-generation family garage on the Iowa-Missouri border through a car lift decision that was really about two things: could they fit seasonal storage for the owner’s grandson’s classic Chevelle over the top of a working service bay, and what actually happens if the hydraulic power unit fails in year three. Those two questions sound unrelated, but they both come down to the same underlying detail — knowing the real dimensions of the lift and the real workflow of the warranty. A brochure won’t tell you either. This deep-dive is what we told them, with the numbers, so you can size and warranty-plan a lift for your own shop the same way.

The Real Dimensions Nobody Prints in the Brochure
Every brochure gives you overall height and drive-through width. Almost none give you the numbers that actually matter for a border-country garage with 10-foot ceilings and a working bay under a storage lift. On a Rotary SPO10 two-post, overall column height is 145 inches. That’s just over 12 feet, so a standard 10-foot ceiling is a non-starter unless you drop to a low-ceiling variant. But the number to actually check is rise, not height: max lifting height under the pad on that lift is about 71 inches, meaning a full-size sedan on the pads gives you around 6 feet under the rocker. Good for standing work, tight for a headlamp mechanic.
For seasonal storage over a working bay, the four-post is the right tool. A Rotary AR100 or an Atlas Apex10 gives you real usable rise around 78 inches under the runways, with a total collapsed height under 6 feet. That means a car on the lift up top and a working car underneath with clearance for a hood-up service. Get the manufacturer’s install manual and look at three numbers: collapsed height, lifting height, and outside width. Those three tell you if the lift will fit your slab and your ceiling before anyone quotes anything.
Warranty Structure on a Commercial-Grade Car Lift
Warranty coverage is where third-generation shops get burned by online-only sellers. A commercial-grade car lift from Rotary or Challenger carries a layered warranty: five years on the structure (columns, runways, welded parts), two years on hydraulic components (cylinder, power unit, hoses), and one year on electrical (motor, contactor, controls). Cables and chains, depending on model, are often one year against defect, longer against premature wear. Read the actual warranty document, not the salesman’s summary. Structural five is the number that most sellers advertise; it’s also the least likely thing to ever fail.
The claim workflow matters more than the coverage length. On our commercial car lift sales, a claim goes through us directly. We open the ticket with the manufacturer, get parts drop-shipped to the shop, and if it’s within the first year we roll a service truck. Compare that to buying a lift from a coastal warehouse-only seller: the shop opens its own ticket, waits for a return-authorization number, and typically pays freight both ways on a warranty part. A cylinder is 60 to 90 pounds crated. That’s real money in freight if you’re paying it.
Seasonal Storage: The Ceiling and Slab Math
The family shop we walked through wanted to store the Chevelle in winter and pull the daily driver underneath for oil changes and inspections. The math ran like this. Chevelle overall height with the vinyl top is roughly 54 inches. Runway height on a four-post at full rise is 78 inches. So the top of the Chevelle sits at 132 inches, or 11 feet, off the floor. Their ceiling was 11 feet six inches at the low point of the truss. That gave them six inches of grace, which is enough but not generous.
Then the slab. A four-post car lift generally needs 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete minimum, and for 10K-pound capacity many manufacturers spec 4.25 inches. The shop had a 6-inch slab from a previous engine bay repair, so that was fine. If your slab is older or thinner, factor in a saw-cut-and-pour before install. On the border between Iowa and Missouri we’ve done this exact repour many times; expect $1,500 to $2,500 for a pad big enough to anchor a four-post car lift properly. Do it once, do it right.
Hydraulic Failure: What Actually Happens on a Real Claim
Last spring a shop in Florida called us in a panic because a car was stuck up on a leaking hydraulic cylinder, and they didn’t know the brand of their lift. That’s the nightmare scenario, and it’s why buying a car lift from a supplier who tracks your serial number matters. When we sell and install a lift, we register the serial with the manufacturer and keep a copy locally. If a hydraulic component fails, we already know your model, your install date, and your parts fitment. Warranty replacement of a cylinder on a lift under two years old is a 3-to-5 day turnaround for us.
Off-warranty, a cylinder replacement runs in the $700 to $1,200 range for parts on most commercial lifts, plus labor. A power-unit replacement is similar. Neither is the end of the world, but both are much cheaper if you have the correct part number on the first order. Our advice to the family garage: buy from a seller who registers the lift for you, get the model and serial written on a laminated card and taped inside the electrical box door. Ten years from now when the motor finally quits, you’ll thank yourself.
Cable and Chain Inspection: The Non-Negotiable
Warranty doesn’t cover neglect. On a four-post car lift, the four equalizer cables carry the load. On a two-post, chains do the same job. Both wear. ALI standards call for a documented cable and chain inspection every 90 days on a commercial lift. That’s not a suggestion. If a cable fails and you never inspected it, warranty won’t help you and neither will insurance. We include a laminated inspection card with every lift we install, and we sell replacement cables in stock for every model we carry.
Signs of a cable that needs replacement: any broken wire strand visible, bird-caging, kinks, corrosion, or measurable stretch beyond 3 percent of original length. On a well-used shop lift, plan on replacing all four cables around year 10 as preventive maintenance. On a home or storage-only lift, cables can go 20 years if they’re inspected. Either way, keep a set on the shelf. When a cable does need replacing, you don’t want to be shopping — you want to be swapping.
Electrical: 220 Single-Phase Versus Three-Phase
Most family garages on the Iowa-Missouri border run single-phase 220. Almost every consumer and light-commercial car lift is available in 220 single-phase for that reason. The 3 to 5 horsepower power unit will draw around 25 amps on a hard startup, so plan a dedicated 30-amp breaker with 10-gauge wire. If your shop has three-phase, you have more options: three-phase motors are slightly cheaper to build, last longer, and lift the load faster. If not, don’t sweat it. Single-phase is fine for anything up to 15,000 pounds.
What matters more than phase count is voltage stability. If your shop is at the end of a rural line and voltage sags to 205 during peak, you’ll cook contactors and motors early. Check with a meter under load, or ask your utility for a voltage recording. Cheap fix if there’s a problem: a buck-boost transformer, about $250. Skip it and the first thing that fails on your car lift will be the motor, warranty or not.
Total Ownership Over 15 Years
Put it all together for the border shop: a mid-tier four-post car lift for storage plus seasonal work runs mid-single-digit thousands out the door, installed. Add planned maintenance: cables at year 10 ($400 to $600), a power unit rebuild or replace around year 12 to 15 ($700 to $1,100), and periodic hydraulic fluid changes every 3 years. That puts total 15-year ownership under $8,000 real dollars on a well-chosen lift. Split that across 15 years and 780 weeks of use, and it’s under $10 a week for a piece of equipment that stores an heirloom classic and gives you a working bay underneath.
Warranty won’t cover every dollar of that, but it will cover the big scary early failures.
