The first-time buyer who called us from just outside Cedar Rapids had a two-car garage, a Subaru with a torn CV boot, and a mounting suspicion he was going to be replacing half-shafts every winter for the next decade. He wanted a garage two post lift so he could stop doing axle work on his back. That single call turned into two site visits and a conversation about ceiling height, door swing, symmetric versus asymmetric arms, and whether the concrete slab poured in 1998 could take a lift at all. Every first-time buyer walks through roughly the same decisions, and the order they walk through them matters more than most people realize.

Start with your ceiling height
Ceiling height is the first number you measure, not the last. Every other decision follows from it. A standard garage two post lift needs either a low-ceiling clearance of about 11 feet for an overhead-crossbar design, or about 9 feet 6 inches for a baseplate design. If your ceiling is below 11 feet, you’re either buying a baseplate lift or you’re not lifting cars at home. It’s that simple.
Measure to the lowest point in the ceiling — a joist, a garage door track, a light fixture, a duct. In the Cedar Rapids first-timer’s case, the joists were at 10 feet 8 inches, which knocked out every overhead lift we sell. Baseplate was the only path. Baseplate lifts run a hydraulic hose across the floor between the columns, which most first-timers hate at first glance and get used to within a week. It’s a real trade-off, but a real solution. Overhead lifts are cleaner but require the clearance. Do not buy a lift and then discover the ceiling was too low — we get that call more often than any other, and once the crates are on your driveway the return math gets ugly.
Door swing and clearance around the lift
The second measurement is door swing. On a garage two post lift, you need enough clearance to open both driver and passenger doors fully with the vehicle raised. That means the space between the two columns needs to accommodate the widest door swing of your widest vehicle, plus a few inches for you to actually walk through. Most manufacturers publish a “drive-through clearance” spec, but that number is the empty gap between columns. Doors add inches.
For a standard sedan or Subaru wagon, the 106-inch drive-through width on most home-garage lifts is enough. For a full-size truck or an SUV, you want closer to 108. Beyond width, think about depth. A two-post lift needs 24 to 28 feet of usable garage depth so the vehicle can drive in, the arms can swing out, and you can still get around the front bumper without cracking your knee on a column. Cedar Rapids garages built after 2000 are usually fine. Older detached garages get tight. This is the kind of thing we walk through by phone before you buy any garage two post lift, because rearranging a garage is easier than returning a lift.
Symmetric vs asymmetric for CV axle work
Symmetric and asymmetric describe how the columns and arms are laid out. On a symmetric lift, both columns face straight forward and the four arms are equal length — two forward, two rearward. The vehicle sits centered between the columns. On an asymmetric lift, the columns rotate about 30 degrees, and the front arms are shorter than the rear. The vehicle sits shifted rearward, which gives you door clearance without needing a wider drive-through.
For CV axle and half-shaft work, this matters because you spend a lot of time reaching into the front wheel wells. On a symmetric setup, the front column can be right at your elbow. On an asymmetric, the column rotation gets it out of your way. Most home-garage buyers we work with end up on an asymmetric or a versymmetric (hybrid) design for exactly this reason. That said, if you’re lifting long-wheelbase trucks and half-tons, symmetric handles them better because the center of gravity ends up closer to the columns. Cars: asymmetric. Trucks: symmetric. Mixed fleet: versymmetric. That’s the shortest honest summary of a decision that gets over-explained on the internet.
Capacity — 9K, 10K, or 12K for a home garage
Capacity ratings on a garage two post lift are gross vehicle weight, not curb weight. A 9,000-pound lift will hold a 9,000-pound vehicle fully loaded. For a home garage working on passenger cars, small SUVs, and half-ton trucks, 9K or 10K is plenty. If you own a three-quarter-ton truck, a heavy-duty diesel, or you plan to service a friend’s dually now and then, go 12K.
Do not overbuy. A 15K lift is heavier, more expensive, has longer arms that catch on curbs and wheel wells, and takes up more real estate. Buying big “just in case” is a common mistake. Buy for the ninety-fifth-percentile vehicle you actually work on. For the Cedar Rapids first-timer with the Subaru, we specced a 10K — it handles the Subaru easily, catches his father-in-law’s F-150 comfortably, and leaves headroom for a future half-ton pickup. If he’d bought a 12K, he’d have paid more, gotten heavier arms he’d have to swing around every job, and gained no real capability. Match the lift to the work, not to the fantasy of the work.
Baseplate vs overhead — the Iowa ceiling reality
Most Iowa detached garages we survey have ceilings between 9 and 11 feet. That range is exactly the crossover between baseplate and overhead lift designs. Baseplate lifts route the hydraulic hose across the floor in a low-profile channel between the columns. You drive over it. It’s rated for the weight, and it’s fine. Overhead lifts route the hose across the top crossbar and include a shutoff bar that stops the lift if the vehicle contacts the crossbar.
The safety-shutoff bar on an overhead is a real advantage — it prevents you from ramming a tall vehicle roof into the lift structure. But it eats ceiling. If your ceiling is below 11 feet, you cannot use it. The trade-off is real, and we’ve installed hundreds of both across central Iowa. For a first-time garage two post lift buyer with 10-foot ceilings, baseplate is the right call. For a shop with a 12-foot ceiling working on random vehicles, overhead is worth the price bump. If you’re on the edge, measure to the lowest joist and add an inch for the lift’s own crossbar clearance. A garage two post lift you can’t fully raise is a lift you’ll regret buying.
Concrete requirements before delivery
Every garage two post lift needs a concrete slab that meets the manufacturer’s spec. For most 10K lifts, that means a minimum of 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete. Some 12K and larger lifts want 4.25 inches at 3,500 PSI. Read the install manual. If your slab was poured in the 1990s or earlier and you have no records, we recommend either a core sample or a conservative assumption of 4 inches at 3,000 PSI. Many older detached garage slabs are actually 3.5 inches or less, which is not enough.
If your slab is thin, cracked, or unknown, there are options. You can pour a new slab in place (the cleanest solution but the most expensive). You can pour a reinforced pad in just the lift footprint (cheaper, and code-legal). Or you can go with a portable mobile column lift instead, which uses distributed weight and doesn’t anchor to the slab at all. We help buyers walk through this before quoting anything. The last thing you want is a lift on your driveway with a slab that won’t hold anchors. In Cedar Rapids, we’ve had exactly one first-timer buy first and measure later, and he ended up pouring a new slab. Do not be that person.
Installation and delivery in the Cedar Rapids area

Delivery: expect a curbside drop from an LTL freight carrier. The lift arrives on a pallet, roughly 900 to 1,400 pounds depending on the model. You need either a forklift, a way to break the pallet down on the driveway, or someone with a Bobcat. This trips up more first-time buyers than any other detail.
