He is honest, detail-oriented, and willing to say what worked and what did not in a way that most one-year reviews online never quite manage. Why he chose a home car lift for garage duty

The collector’s original problem was floor space. Six vehicles in a three-stall bay means three of them are stacked, and stacking six thousand pounds of collector iron on top of another six thousand pounds is a bad idea without an actual storage lift underneath. A home car lift for garage storage duty solved that problem the day we finished the install, and it did it while giving him an eye-level workspace for the brake work he was doing several times a season. Two problems solved by one purchase is the math that finally overcame his years of hesitation.

He had considered a 2-post first, but stacking is where a 4-post drive-on wins outright. The vehicle sits on runways with all four wheels supported by the lift, which is the only geometry the collector world trusts for long-term storage. We quoted him a 9,000-pound low-ceiling 4-post rated for his heaviest car with a large margin, and we installed it in the middle stall of his three-stall bay where he had the most access room on both sides. Install day at a Cedar Falls garage

Install day ran a little over five hours from pallet to first cycle test. His slab was a five-inch pour with rebar, which is well above the four-inch minimum for a 9,000-pound 4-post and gave us zero drama on the anchors. We laid out the anchor centers, drilled through the pad into the base gravel, set the anchors, leveled the runways with shims, filled the reservoir, and bled the system. He watched the whole thing and asked good questions, which we appreciate — it means he will be a more self-sufficient owner.

The one hiccup was door clearance. His overhead door track dropped about two inches into the ceiling zone we needed for a fully raised runway, which meant he had to lower the lift before opening the door in a car-on scenario. That is a common issue with older garage door installations and not a fault of the lift. He accepted it as a workflow tradeoff and has not brought it up again in the nine months since. Every install has one of these small compromises, and the best owners learn to work around them instead of fighting them.

Months one to three: the learning curve

The first ninety days are always the settling-in period. He drove up onto the runways four or five times before he stopped over-correcting the steering at the ramp — the runways are wider than they look but narrower than a driveway, and the muscle memory takes a couple weeks to build. He also had to learn the rhythm of engaging locks at each work height, which sounds trivial but was the thing he asked us about most often in the first month. The click of the mechanical lock is what keeps the lift up if hydraulics ever fail, and you want to hear it every time.

The other early-months adjustment was where to store tools relative to the lift. He had been used to a floor toolbox that lived in the middle of the bay, and once the lift went in, the middle of the bay was gone. He moved the toolbox to the wall, added a rolling cart he could push under the raised lift, and built a small parts shelf on the column. Small changes, but they made the difference between a lift that felt in the way and one that felt like it had always been there.

Brake service and rotor swaps at chest height

Brake service was the reason he wanted to work on the lift instead of just storing under it, and it is where the lift has paid back the hardest in the first year. Full rotor swaps that used to take him ninety minutes on jack stands now take about forty on the lift, and the improvement is not the work itself — the wrench time is nearly identical — but the setup and teardown. No jack stands, no chocks, no crawling. Lift, lock, work, drop. He estimated he did fourteen brake or rotor jobs in the first year across the collection, and every one of them was faster and safer.

The one caveat is that he lifts on the runways, which means the wheels stay on and he has to slide-jack each corner to swap a rotor. That is standard 4-post workflow. It adds a jack cycle to each corner, but he is fine with the trade because the storage-lift geometry is what he needed most. If brake service had been his primary reason for a home car lift for garage install and not a secondary reason, we would have quoted a 2-post instead. It is worth knowing the direction of the tradeoff before you buy.

Month six: first cable inspection

At the six-month mark we came back for the first cable inspection. 4-post lifts use lifting cables to keep the two runways synchronized, and those cables are the most inspection-sensitive component on the lift. Inspection intervals depend on the brand and the use pattern, but the general rule is a visual check quarterly and a formal inspection annually. His use pattern — heavy storage, moderate work cycles — put him on the lighter end of the wear curve, and the six-month visit was more of a familiarization than a real intervention.

What we look for is broken strands, corrosion, uneven wear at the sheaves, and any change in the diameter along the cable’s working length. His cables at six months were in essentially new condition, which is what we expected. We greased the sheaves, checked the arm-restraint mechanisms, and cycled the lift through its full travel. Cable replacement intervals for a lightly used home lift can be as long as ten to fifteen years, but the visual check every ninety days is what catches early wear before it becomes a real problem. Month nine: fluid change and locks check

At the nine-month mark he was due for his first hydraulic fluid change under the manufacturer’s home schedule. Fluid on a home-duty 4-post typically wants a change every two to three years, but the manufacturer sets a shorter interval for the first change to flush the assembly residue out of the reservoir. Fluid change is a straightforward drain-and-refill process; the more interesting part of the visit was the locks check. Mechanical locks should engage cleanly at every position without any hesitation, and the release handle should not require force to disengage.

His locks were engaging cleanly but the release handle had picked up a little play from settling into use, which we adjusted in about ten minutes. That kind of small adjustment is normal in the first year and is one of the reasons we recommend a professional service visit somewhere in months six to twelve rather than waiting a full year. Little issues addressed early stay little; little issues ignored become the ones that show up at the worst possible time, usually on a Saturday when you have a vehicle in the air and something else to do.

Year one review: what he would do differently

Asked at the twelve-month mark what he would change, the collector had two answers. The first was that he would have bought the lift five years earlier. That is the answer we get from about ninety percent of first-year owners, and it stops being a surprise after enough installs. The second was that he would have spent a little more on a wider set of accessories at purchase — a drip tray, a longer set of drive-up ramps, a set of stackable wheel chocks that fit his specific tire diameters. Those are the small things that make daily use smoother, and they are much cheaper to buy at install than to source piecemeal later.

Overall he rated the home car lift for garage installation as the highest-return single purchase he had made for the collection in a decade, ahead of any tool investment and ahead of the garage renovation itself. That is a strong statement from a careful buyer, and it lines up with what we hear across our home-install customers year after year.
