A Davenport-area collector called us last year about a home car lift for garage duty with three cars stored across changing seasons and a fourth planned. He wanted something that would handle tire rotations and light wheel work reliably, with obvious safety margins because he’d be under vehicles alone. Install week: measuring twice and pouring once

The Davenport garage was a detached 30-by-40 with a 12-foot ceiling and a fresh 5-inch slab poured the previous summer. First step was to verify the slab thickness at each column location, which we did with a small core probe. On the entry ends of the runways, spring-loaded ramps rise into place after the vehicle drives up, blocking the tires from rolling backward. On the sides, low walls or curbs prevent lateral drift. When the lift is raised, the vehicle’s weight is planted on the runways through the tires, but the restraints keep small movements, from wind, from working on the vehicle, from someone leaning against a fender, from turning into rolling accidents.

On the Davenport install, we spent extra time walking the customer through how the arm restraints engage and how to verify them visually before each raise. The pattern is: drive on, chock the front tire against the forward stop, engage the parking brake, verify the rear entry ramp has rotated up into position, then raise the lift. If one column lags, you hear staggered clicks, which means the equalizer cable tension is off and one runway is climbing faster than the other.

We came back for a scheduled visit, re-torqued the anchors, adjusted equalizer cable tension by a quarter turn (small drift is normal), and verified all four safety cams engaged simultaneously. Six months in: what wore, what didn’t

At the six-month recheck, the anchor bolts had drifted a tiny fraction of a torque spec, normal seating of the wedge into the concrete, and we re-torqued them to spec. The equalizer cables were still within tolerance. The hydraulic reservoir was full, no visible seepage from any of the fittings. Wear points we look at closely at six months: cable runs where they turn over pulleys, the ratchet pawls on the safety cams, the drive-on ramp pivot pins, and the hydraulic cylinder seals. All were clean.

What did wear was cosmetic. The powder coat on the leading edges of the drive-on ramps had chipped from repeated vehicle contact, normal wear that doesn’t affect function. The customer touched it up with a matching enamel spray and moved on. The rolling jack pads showed some rubber compression from repeated loading, and we noted that the pads are consumable, plan on replacing them every three to five years depending on use. The maintenance log we recommend

That’s a healthy log. If we saw fluid additions without an obvious external leak, we’d suspect internal cylinder seal wear. If we saw more than a couple cable adjustments per year, we’d suspect a bent or worn pulley. What we’d do differently on install two

The Davenport customer is now planning a second lift for his growing collection, and we’ve done the install-two walkthrough with him. Two changes: first, we’re speccing a slightly longer runway length because his newest vehicle is a full-size classic pickup that overhangs the standard 15-foot runway; second, we’re pouring a thicker apron in front of the lift because the drive-on approach across an older section of slab shows some settling that could complicate the runway approach.

We’d also add LED task lighting from install day this time. The first lift was retrofitted with LED strips six months after install, and the customer said if he could do it over he’d have run the wiring during initial install to route the cables cleanly. Small thing, big daily-use impact.
