If you run a European-marque specialty shop in Urbandale, your hydraulic lift automotive routine looks nothing like a generic service bay’s. You are doing differential fluid on cars with three-piece driveshafts and factory torque specs measured to a tenth of a Nm. You are working on aluminum bodies where a mispositioned puck permanently dents a sill. And you are supposed to trust arm restraints and safety cams that half your techs never actually touch. This is a myth-busting piece — the common mistakes we see when we service or install lifts at Iowa Euro shops, and how the guys who do it right keep their bays running for a decade without an incident report.

Myth 1: Arm Restraints Are Automatic

Almost every modern two-post lift ships with gear-driven arm restraints — a serrated mechanism at the arm pivot that locks the arm to whatever swing angle it was in when the carriage started rising. The myth is that they are automatic in the sense of being self-verifying. They are not. The restraint engages when the arm is loaded and the carriage moves; it does not engage when the arm is empty and the carriage sits stationary. A tech who sets the pads, walks away to grab a coffee, comes back, and starts raising without a bounce-test does not know if a pad slipped a quarter inch during that walk-away. If it did, the restraint locked in the slipped position.

The correct habit is straightforward. Set pads. Raise six inches. Bounce the vehicle. Walk each corner and confirm each puck is centered and fully loaded on its contact point. Only then raise to working height. Every hydraulic lift automotive machine we sell has that instruction in the operator manual, and every serious Euro shop we service enforces it. The mistake is treating the restraint as a substitute for the check, rather than as backup for a check that was done right. We have replaced arms on lifts where a slipped pad tore a restraint gear out of the housing during descent. The gear did its job. The tech did not do his.

Myth 2: Safety Cams Engage When You Hit the Lower Button

Mechanical safety cams — the audible “click, click, click” you hear as the carriage rises — are the primary mechanical backstop on a two-post lift. Hydraulics are the moving mechanism; the cams are what holds a car in the air if the hydraulic circuit fails. The myth is that lowering the lift onto the cams happens automatically when you press the lower control. It does not. On virtually every commercial hydraulic lift automotive machine, you have to raise slightly above the cam you intend to rest on, then lower until the carriages physically settle on the cam pawls. If you lower straight to the floor without pausing on the cams, the cams never engage and the car is held only by fluid pressure.

This mistake is chronically common in Urbandale shops during quick services like diff fluid changes, where the tech is under the car for maybe eight minutes and does not bother to “drop on the locks” because it feels like overkill. It is not overkill. A pinhole in a hydraulic hose does not care that the job is short. Standard operating procedure at every ALI-certified shop we work with: after raising to working height, raise one more inch, then lower until the audible clack of the cam pawl seating on both sides. Myth 3: Any Puck Height Works for a Euro Car

European chassis pinch weld points sit lower than most domestic trucks and higher than most Japanese economy cars. Setting a generic 3-inch puck under a Porsche 911 will crack the plastic underbody tray. Setting the same puck under a 3-series lifts fine but sits at an angle that stresses the sill. Every serious Euro shop we know keeps a full puck-height library — flat pads for low cars, tall pucks with rubber cups for cars with underbody covers, and manufacturer-specific adapters for BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche. Skipping the correct adapter is the single most expensive mistake in the shop, because a bent aluminum sill on a customer’s E-Class is a claim.

The fix is inventory discipline. We help shops build a puck kit organized by vehicle line, stored on the lift itself, with clear labels. Myth 4: Diff-Fluid Positioning Doesn’t Matter

Differential fluid changes on a Euro all-wheel-drive car are a positioning puzzle. On many BMW, Audi, and Mercedes platforms, the fill plug is on the rear of the diff housing, and getting a torque wrench square on it while a tech leans in from the side requires the vehicle to be level, arms locked at the correct angle, and working height set so the plug sits at chest level. Too high and you cannot see the plug threads. Too low and you cannot swing a wrench arc. Wrong angle and the fluid drains at the wrong volume.

The correct workflow is to set the pads exactly at OEM positions, raise into the mechanical locks, and choose the cam step that lands the diff at chest-to-shoulder height on your tallest tech. If the shop has techs of very different heights, we build a low-step and mid-step preset table on the wall next to the lift, so anyone can dial the correct position in ten seconds. Myth 5: Older Lifts Don’t Need Restraint Re-Certification

ALI recommends periodic inspection by a certified lift inspector on any commercial lift, with intervals depending on use — for most Euro shops, annually is the right rhythm. The myth is that a lift installed ten years ago and “still working fine” does not need that inspection because nothing has visibly changed. Arm restraint gears wear invisibly. Cam pawls lose their sharp edges. Anchor bolts loosen a quarter turn a year until suddenly the base plate rocks under load. A five-minute annual inspection catches all of that. Skipping it is the mistake.

Myth 6: Rocking the Car Tests Adequate Pad Contact

The bounce-test is standard, but many techs bounce too gently to actually catch a soft pad. A firm shove — enough to visibly compress the suspension and rebound — is what confirms all four pads are square. A gentle rock only confirms the pads are touching, not that they are loaded. On aluminum-body Euro cars where a slipping pad damages the sill instantly, the difference matters. New techs often bounce timidly because they do not want to look rough with the customer’s car; that timidity is the mistake.

We train customer teams on the correct bounce cadence during install. Two firm pushes from the side, one from the corner, one downward on the roof pillar. If any pad shifts, you feel it in the whole car. If none shift, you are clean to raise. It sounds obvious but it is the single most-skipped step on a busy Urbandale shop floor. Building the habit is worth more than any tool upgrade, and it works on any hydraulic lift automotive setup regardless of brand or age. Once the habit is in the muscle memory of every tech in the shop, incidents effectively stop.

Myth 7: Hydraulic Bypass Is Always a Pump Problem

When a lift slowly drifts down while parked on the cams, most techs assume the pump is failing. Nine times out of ten it is not the pump. It is a bypassing hydraulic cylinder — worn piston seals letting fluid past. A pump-focused diagnosis leads to a $600 pump swap that does not fix the drift, followed by a second call to us asking why the new pump did not solve it. The correct diagnostic is to isolate the cylinder from the pump circuit, block the port, and see whether the drift continues. If it does, the cylinder needs a seal kit.

Cylinder rebuild kits are inexpensive and most techs can install them in an afternoon per cylinder. We stock kits for every major brand we sell, and can ship next-day across Iowa.
