A 2 post car lift lives a hard life in a rural farm shop, and getting the pre-purchase checklist right is the difference between a lift that lasts thirty years and one that starts drifting within twenty-four months. Item One: Confirm Your Vehicle Mix and Weight Ceiling
Before anything else, sit down and list every vehicle that will ever go on the lift. Heaviest gross vehicle weight on the list is what you spec the lift capacity against, and you always spec up — never down — from that number. The Waterloo shop's list topped out at a Ford F-350 crew cab with a service body, right around 11,000 pounds all-in. That put him firmly in the 14,000 lb 2 post car lift category. A 10,000 lb lift would have been over-spec by 10 percent on his primary vehicle and that is not a margin you want to live with.
Farm shops routinely underestimate this number. That half-ton pickup in your barn has probably been augmented with a heavier bumper, a bed cover, tool boxes, a fifth-wheel hitch, and a full tank of diesel by the time you actually roll it onto the lift. What was marketed as 5,900 pounds curb weight is now 7,200 pounds real-world. Weigh it if you can, or add fifteen percent to the manufacturer's curb weight if you cannot get on a scale.
Item Two: Measure the Slab Depth and Test the Concrete
Farm shops built in the seventies and eighties often have four-inch concrete, which is right at the minimum spec for most commercial 2 post car lift models. Shops built earlier — the fifties and sixties — sometimes have three-inch concrete, which is under spec and cannot support a lift without either pouring thickened footings at each column location or reinforcing the entire slab. Measure by drilling a small pilot hole at each intended column location before you buy anything.
Test the concrete quality, not just the depth. Old farm-shop concrete can look solid on the surface and hide honeycombing, cold joints, or aggregate segregation underneath. If the pilot hole gives you dust and small chips clean through the depth, the concrete is probably sound. If you hit voids, spongy layers, or clay-like fill, stop and call us before you order. Fixing bad concrete after the lift is anchored is dramatically more expensive than fixing it before.
Item Three: Verify Ceiling Height at the Lowest Point
Farm shops often have vaulted ceilings with cross-braces or roof trusses that hang lower than the peak. The number that matters for a 2 post car lift is the height at the lowest structural point above the intended lift location, not the peak of the ceiling. Overhead-style lifts need 12 feet or more clear. Baseplate-style lifts need about 9 feet 6 inches. Round down when in doubt — measuring 11 feet 11 inches and calling it close enough to 12 is how installs go sideways.
The Waterloo farm shop had a 13-foot 6-inch clear ceiling under the trusses in the intended bay, plenty for an overhead-style lift. He ended up buying an overhead 14K unit because he preferred the cleaner floor and the higher maximum-rise. If your shop is under 12 feet, do not stretch to fit an overhead — buy the baseplate and never think about it again.
Item Four: Overhead Door Path and Retracted Position
Farm-shop overhead doors, especially older ones, sometimes retract into the ceiling in ways that eat into the usable overhead space. A 12-foot door in the retracted position can take up 14 to 18 inches of the ceiling depending on the specific track design. If your ceiling is a marginal 12 feet, the door in retracted position might drop your effective clear ceiling to under 11 feet, which changes the lift you can install.
Sketch the door in both closed and open positions. Confirm the lift columns will not collide with the door tracks in either position. Confirm the overhead cross-tube (if you are buying an overhead-style unit) will not sit inside the door's retracted path. The Waterloo shop had a very old 10-foot door on the intended bay, and we ended up recommending he retire that door and install a new 12-foot door before the lift arrived — a $2,100 side project that made the whole install work.
Item Five: Electrical Service and Panel Amperage
A 2 post car lift under 14,000 pounds runs off a single-phase 220V 30-amp circuit. Farm shops often have adequate panel amperage but no unused circuits at 220V — the existing 220V circuits are all serving welders, air compressors, and grain augers. Confirm you have a free 30-amp slot in the panel or budget for a subpanel upgrade. Adapters, plugs, and any electrical accessories live in our parts lookup.
Wire gauge from the panel to the lift matters too. A short run (under 30 feet) can use 10-gauge wire; longer runs need 8-gauge or heavier to avoid voltage drop under motor load. Have a licensed electrician confirm the wire sizing before you commit to a lift location — moving the lift later means running new wire, which is a real cost. The Waterloo shop had a subpanel already installed for a MIG welder and we ran a dedicated circuit from that subpanel in about forty-five minutes.
Item Six: Model and Spec Comparison Across Brands
Once you know your capacity, ceiling clearance, and concrete spec, compare specific models across the brands we carry. Both are ALI-certified, both have similar warranty terms, both come in symmetric or asymmetric arm configurations, and both fit the same install footprint. The differences are subtle but real. Rotary has the deepest parts catalog and the longest warranty on structural components. Challenger has the best combination of price and features in the mid-range. Which brand wins depends on which trade-off you value. The Waterloo shop chose Rotary because he wanted the longest parts-availability tail on a lift he expected to still be running in 2050. That is a legitimate reason to pay a small premium up front.
Item Seven: Installation, Inspection, and First-Year Service
The final checklist item is what happens after the lift arrives. Are you installing it yourself, hiring a local mechanic, or paying a certified installer? Do you plan to run annual ALI inspections (mandatory for commercial shops, recommended for farm shops)? Do you have a plan for the first-year service check — anchor retorque, cable tension check, hydraulic fluid top-off?
