A car restoration shop owner in Waterloo emailed us photos of a hydraulic cylinder weeping fluid at the rod seal on an older 2 post car lift he’d been running for eighteen years. Annual state inspections on his restoration project vehicles were coming up, the lift wouldn’t hold pressure overnight, and he was on the fence between a $350 seal kit and a $5,500 whole-lift replacement. When a leaking cylinder is a rebuild versus a replacement
Every 2 post car lift cylinder eventually leaks. The seal stack — usually a rod U-cup, a piston U-cup, a wear ring, and a rod wiper — is a consumable that lasts eight to fifteen years depending on cycles, hydraulic-fluid quality, and Iowa humidity. When you see fluid at the rod, that’s a rod-seal leak; when you see fluid dropping to the floor from the base of the cylinder, that’s a piston-seal or gland-nut leak. In either case the first question is whether the cylinder body is scored on the interior — because if the bore is scored, no seal kit is going to hold pressure for long.
The rule of thumb: if the lift is under twelve years old, the cylinder has never been rebuilt, and it holds at working height for at least fifteen minutes before drifting, it’s a seal-kit candidate. If the lift is over twenty years old, has been rebuilt once, or drifts a foot in an hour, we’re talking about a full cylinder replacement or a whole-lift decision. For the Waterloo restoration shop, the lift was eighteen years old, never rebuilt, and dropped four inches overnight — right on the boundary. Identifying your cylinder: OEM markings and seal kits
Before you order a seal kit, you need to identify the cylinder. Rotary cylinders carry a metal tag on the barrel with a part number starting FJ or FC. Challenger cylinders have a stamped serial-and-part combo on the base. BendPak cylinders use a stick-on tag on the rod cover. The Waterloo shop’s lift was an older Rotary SPO9 (9,000 lb symmetric) with an FJ7461 cylinder — a 2.5-inch bore, 63-inch stroke unit. The seal kit for that cylinder is the FJ7461-KIT, which we stock in Ames for $85.
Serialization matters because cylinders got redesigned across model years. The same lift model might have a 2.5-inch bore in early production and a 3-inch bore after a mid-cycle update, and the seals aren’t interchangeable. Order the kit by cylinder part number, not by lift model number. If the tag on your cylinder is unreadable — corroded, painted over, missing — pull the rod cap and measure the rod diameter with calipers; that’s usually enough for us to match the kit from our cross-reference table. Never guess a seal kit on a 2 post car lift because a wrong-size seal will fail in hours.
Removing and disassembling the cylinder safely
The disassembly sequence on a 2 post car lift cylinder starts with the safety warning that stops half of DIY cylinder rebuilds: the cylinder has to be at zero pressure, mechanically supported so the lift can’t move, and the hydraulic reservoir bled or capped. We’ve seen shops try to pull a cylinder with a car still on the arms — the arm-restraint pins are only holding the arms in place, not the vehicle weight. The vehicle comes off, the lift comes down onto its lowest lock, and only then does the hydraulic pressure come out and the cylinder come apart.
With the lift on locks and pressure released, the cylinder comes out through the top of the column on most Rotary and Challenger symmetric designs. Unbolt the rod-end pin from the carriage, unbolt the base clevis, pull the hydraulic line at the base, and slide the whole cylinder up and out. On a baseplate-model 2 post car lift the routing is tighter — sometimes the hydraulic line has to come off the pump first. Take photos of every routing before you disassemble. A cylinder job that would take four hours goes to eight if you get the return spring or the equalizer cable routing wrong on reassembly.
Ordering the right seal kit for your brand
Rotary and Challenger publish seal kits by cylinder part number and stock them through their authorized distributors. We keep the twelve most-common kits on the shelf in Ames, and same-day-order the rest from the factory with a two-business-day lead time. Kit contents vary but usually include: primary rod seal (U-cup or lip seal), rod wiper (dust seal), piston seal (usually a compression band and a U-cup), piston wear ring, and O-rings for the rod cap and base cap. BendPak kits ship from Southern California with a four-to-six business day window if you’re not near a distributor.
Import-brand cylinders often don’t have documented seal kits. If your 2 post car lift is a Chinese import from an unknown brand that came in a shipping container in 2011, you may find that the cylinder is a proprietary bore-and-stroke combo with no aftermarket kit and no manufacturer support. In that case your options are: match a generic Parker or Prince cylinder with the same bore, stroke, and rod-end style; have the cylinder rebuilt at a hydraulic shop with custom-machined seals; or replace the whole lift. All three are more expensive than a Rotary seal kit, and this is one of the compounding reasons to buy domestic in the first place.
Rebuild versus whole-lift replacement decision
Here’s the decision tree we walked the Waterloo shop through. Seal kit: $85 in parts, three hours of skilled labor at their shop labor rate ($510), lift back in service the same day. Total: $595 if everything cooperates. Cylinder replacement: $780 for a new OEM cylinder, three hours of labor, $945 total. Whole-lift replacement: $4,800 for a new SPO10 asymmetric, $1,600 install, $6,400 total — plus the old lift comes out and goes to scrap for $200 credit.
The tipping factors are: how many other components are aging on the same lift (cables, arm restraints, sheaves), whether the columns and arms are still ANSI/ALI compliant, and whether the shop is likely to keep running that lift for another eight-plus years. For the Waterloo shop, the cables were seven years old (three years from replacement), the arm restraints had a documented wear pattern, and the shop was moving toward heavier restoration work. We recommended whole-lift replacement, not seal-kit-plus-cable-replacement-in-three-years. The math on a 2 post car lift replacement usually pencils out when three or more components are aging together.
Annual state inspections and lift condition
Iowa doesn’t require annual OSHA inspection on a shop lift the way some states do, but insurance carriers do — most commercial garage policies stipulate an annual lift inspection by a qualified technician as a condition of coverage. The inspection covers: cable condition, sheave grooving, arm-restraint engagement at every arm-length setting, safety-cam engagement at every latch position, hydraulic pressure hold, and structural condition of columns and arms. A weeping cylinder fails the hydraulic-hold portion.
For a restoration shop the annual inspection matters double, because your customer vehicles include irreplaceable classics and any damage-in-service claim would be catastrophic. The Waterloo shop’s carrier had already flagged the lift on the prior year’s inspection with a note to replace the cylinder or the lift by the next inspection. That deadline is the reason the decision wasn’t a hypothetical — a failed 2 post car lift inspection would have suspended his ability to work on customer vehicles under his current policy. The math tilted toward whole-lift replacement not by cost, but by insurance timeline.
When we tell a restoration shop to move on
We told the Waterloo owner it was time to move on from that eighteen-year-old lift, and here’s the logic: he’s spent every year of the last decade patching one thing at a time — cable replacement in 2018, sheave replacement in 2021, hydraulic pump repair in 2023. A cylinder rebuild in 2026 keeps a patched lift patched. What a restoration shop needs is a lift that will run through the next fifteen or twenty years of one-off classic vehicles with unknown weight distributions and non-standard pinch weld locations, and that’s not the lift he had.
