We talk to restoration owners every week who are staring at a wall of options, trying to sort symmetric from asymmetric, 10K from 12K capacity, overhead from baseplate, and getting stuck comparing feature bullets side by side. Start with the vehicles, not the lift

The single biggest mistake we see restoration owners make when picking a 2 post car lift is starting with a brand or a price tag instead of the metal coming through the door. A ’67 Camaro is not a ’19 F-150, and neither of those is a ’32 roadster on a modernized chassis. Before you look at columns and cables, sit down and write out the ten heaviest, longest, and lowest cars you expect to touch in the next five years. That list is your real spec sheet, not the tri-fold brochure.

From there the answers get simpler. If the heaviest vehicle you’ll service is 5,500 pounds, a 10,000 lb 2 post car lift buys real safety margin. If you’re pulling drivetrains out of a dually or a lifted Bronco on 37s, that changes the arm reach and the capacity conversation. Length matters too — a stock arm set won’t cradle a stretched-wheelbase muscle car the same way it does a sedan. We’ve had shop owners thank us for asking about their heaviest project car before we quoted a lift, because that one question changed which unit actually made sense to install.

Overhead versus baseplate: measure the ceiling first

Ceiling height is the second gate on any 2 post car lift decision, and in northeast Iowa shops we see the full range — from converted grain-sheds with 20-foot trusses to detached one-bay garages with drop ceilings around 10 feet. Overhead-style 2-post lifts route the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a top beam and need roughly 12 to 14 feet of clearance depending on model. Baseplate lifts route the cables and hoses through a plate cast into the floor, which lets you install under an 11-foot ceiling and still get useful lift height.

The trade-off isn’t just clearance. Baseplate designs leave a low floorplate you drive over — a small trip and cleanup consideration, but nothing dramatic. Overhead gives you a cleaner drive-through but needs the room. If you’re restoring convertibles or tall trucks that stand up on their own wheels, remember that lift height and vehicle height stack. Bring us your ceiling measurement, your tallest vehicle, and the door height, and we’ll tell you honestly whether overhead is worth the extra headroom or whether a baseplate 2 post car lift solves the problem cleaner without giving up capacity or serviceability.

Symmetric or asymmetric arms: the transmission service test

The symmetric-versus-asymmetric question is where restoration guys get the most confused, and honestly the answer depends more on what you do under the car than any spec on the datasheet. Symmetric arms are the same length front and back; the car sits centered between the columns. Asymmetric arms rotate the vehicle back roughly 30 degrees so the door opens between the columns without contacting them. For a restoration shop doing a lot of transmission work, that swing matters more than most owners realize until they’ve fought it once.

Here’s the test: if the driver door has to open all the way while the car is in the air — because you’re pulling shift linkage, wiring harnesses, or a full transmission crossmember — asymmetric wins. If most of your work is underbody, wheels off, and body-off restoration where cabin access matters less, symmetric gives you a more balanced load. Some newer 2 post car lift models offer versa-symmetric arms that split the difference, and they work well for a mixed-use bay. When we consult on a northeast Iowa restoration shop that does regular transmission jobs, we usually push asymmetric or versa — the door-clearance savings show up every single day.

Capacity, arm reach, and the longest project on your list

Capacity gets talked about a lot on 2-post sales sheets, but arm reach is the underrated companion spec. A 10,000-pound lift with short stock arms won’t cradle a long-wheelbase truck any better than a 9,000-pound unit; conversely, a 12,000 lb lift with telescoping drop-end arms opens a whole different tier of vehicles. For a restoration shop we generally recommend a minimum of 10,000 pounds unless you know for a fact you’ll never touch a full-size truck or dually.

Arm reach is where the newer 12,000 lb 2 post car lift options really earn their keep. Longer arms with double-telescoping screw pads let you catch factory pinch welds on modern unibodies and still swing back to catch a body-on-frame classic without swapping stack adapters between jobs. If your restoration mix runs from ’60s muscle to modern retro-fits and the occasional customer daily, you want the arm envelope, not just the lift envelope. We’ve walked more than one shop owner off buying an entry 9,000-pound unit and into a proper 10K or 12K because the math on future projects didn’t support saving the smaller number up front.

Screw pads, drop-end arms, and hard-to-reach pickup points

Every good 2 post car lift comes with some version of screw-up pads and arm restraints, but not all pad systems are equal. Double-telescoping screw pads give you more vertical reach than single-telescoping ones, which matters on lifted trucks, cars with running boards, and low restoration projects where the frame pickup is buried behind rockers. Drop-end arms — front or rear — get you under vehicles with low front air dams or split-bumper classics where the factory pickup sits right at the tire.

Pay attention to the arm restraint design too. Better 2-post models use a positive locking mechanism that engages the moment weight comes off the arm; cheaper units rely on gravity and gear-tooth engagement that can wear. In a restoration shop where the same car might sit in the air for two weeks between paint stages, arm restraint quality is a safety-of-life issue, not a feature preference. When we recommend a lift for that use case, we default to Rotary or Challenger commercial arm sets and skip the bottom-tier home-garage arm packages entirely. It’s not upsell — it’s what stays reliable through 500 lift cycles a year.

Concrete slab, anchors, and northeast Iowa install realities

Concrete is the last major gate on any 2 post car lift install, and it’s the one shop owners underestimate more often than any other spec. Every 2-post manufacturer publishes minimum slab requirements — typically 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 to 4,000 PSI concrete with the anchor bolts landing at least a foot from any expansion joint. A lot of older northeast Iowa shops we visit have 4-inch slabs of unknown PSI, and some of the pole barns we work in have 3-inch slabs poured over gravel. Those don’t hold a lift.

The fix depends on the situation. Sometimes it’s a saw-cut and pour of new pads directly under the two columns, which is a straightforward day of work. Sometimes it’s a full slab replacement for the bay. We’ve done both across northeast Iowa and we’ll tell you honestly which route saves you money and time. Rebar helps but isn’t a substitute for thickness and PSI; the anchor bolts have to torque to spec and hold that torque under cyclic load. If you’re not sure what you have under your feet, we’ll come out, core-sample the slab, and give you a real answer before you commit to a specific 2-post model.

What happens after the sale — install, service, parts

The last leg of the decision tree is the one price-shoppers skip: what does ownership look like once the lift is anchored in the ground? We install every unit we sell across northeast Iowa, and we stock parts for every major brand — cables, cylinders, hoses, arm restraints, safety locks, power units. That matters because a lift is not a one-time purchase; it’s a piece of equipment that will need attention over its 15 to 25 year working life. Cables stretch. Hoses weep. Locks wear.
