Why We Recommended a 2 Post Car Lift for a Great Lakes Collector
The collector’s first instinct was a four-post: drive on, park, forget, done. It is the default for people who think of a lift as storage. We pushed back. Four-posts are excellent for long-term parking and for cars you never touch, but this collector was going to have his hands on every vehicle every year, oil, tires, brake fluid, coolant flushes, and pre-inspection safety checks. For hands-on work, a 2 post car lift beats a four-post on every metric except drive-on convenience.
What sold him was the wheels-free access. On a two-post, the arms pick up the chassis under the manufacturer lift points and the wheels dangle free. That means brake work, wheel bearings, tire rotations, and suspension inspection all happen without moving the car twice. On a four-post you need rolling jacks and a second setup to get the wheels off. For a collection where he was going to do annual full-service on each car, the two-post added up to hundreds of hours saved across the fleet over a decade. Install Day: What Actually Happened
The barn was a nineteen-eighties pole building with a poured concrete floor of unknown vintage. Our first move on install day was a core sample near the anchor grid. The slab measured five-and-a-half inches with mesh, well within spec. We laid out the column centerlines using the vehicle wheelbase specs he gave us, drilled the anchor holes with a rotary hammer, and set the anchors dry before torquing.
Columns went vertical by eleven that morning. We shimmed the base plates to plumb with the laser, threaded the cables, mounted the header and shutoff bar, and connected the powerpack. By two in the afternoon we were on our first cycle without a vehicle, checking the safety latches at every height. The full first-vehicle test came the next morning after the anchor epoxy had cured, which the manufacturer requires and we do not skip even on wedge anchors, because the confidence check is worth the overnight wait. Total on-site time from truck arrival to final walk-through was about eight hours across a day and a half, which is typical for a residential install where we are also running a customer through operation.
First Tune-Up and Safety Walkthrough
At three months we came back for the first tune-up. On a new 2 post car lift the first service is important because cables stretch slightly during the first hundred cycles, hydraulic fluid settles, and any anchor movement shows up. We re-torqued anchors, checked cable tension and equalization, inspected the arm restraint gears, cleaned the safety latch pockets, and topped off hydraulic fluid.
The safety walkthrough was where the collector learned the most. We showed him how to read the safety latch engagement across height, how to feel for cable stretch by comparing cable tension on the two columns, and what a healthy hydraulic pump sounds like versus one that is starting to cavitate. We taught him to always lower onto the safety locks before working under the car, never to trust the hydraulic hold alone, and to walk around the vehicle once at every new height before crawling under. Those habits sound obvious in print but they are the ones that save lives at midnight when a collector is finishing a job by themselves. He now runs the checklist without prompting on every lift cycle.
Brand History: Rotary, Challenger, BendPak in Perspective
The collector asked us at year-end which brand he had ended up on and why. He was on a Rotary. Rotary has been building two-post lifts since the nineteen-twenties, is manufactured in the U.S., and is the most common lift in commercial dealership service bays across the country. Challenger is another commercial-tier brand we stock, made in Louisville, with a strong presence in independent shops. BendPak is the third we typically discuss, more common in enthusiast and prosumer garages with a broader product range.
For a collector who wanted an heirloom-quality lift he would still be using in twenty years and passing to a grandchild, Rotary and Challenger are the top of the deck. BendPak makes excellent enthusiast-tier products and is a fair choice at a lower price point. We do not push one brand over the other because the collector’s mission dictates the answer; we push away from unbranded imports and gray-market units that show up on the auction sites, because the parts pipeline behind those units evaporates within a few years and we cannot service them ten years down the road when a cylinder seal fails.
The Parts Pipeline Behind a Modern 2 Post Car Lift
One reason we sell what we sell is the parts pipeline. A modern 2 post car lift is built with proprietary sheaves, cable assemblies, arm restraint gears, and cylinder seal kits. When something wears out at year seven or year twelve, you need a supplier who can put the right part in your hand within a week. Annual State Inspection Prep on Lifts We Install
Iowa does not require annual vehicle inspection, but many collectors move cars in and out of collector-title programs and inter-state registrations that do. Having a 2 post car lift changes inspection prep from a driveway crawl to a proper walkaround. On the collector’s lift, we walk through every car in his fleet in early spring: brake lines, exhaust hangers, ball joints, steering linkage, fuel lines, and fluid seepage.
At year one, he had caught two issues on his own that would have been invisible without the lift. A cracked fuel filler hose on a nineteen-seventies coupe, and a leaking rear main on a low-mileage classic that would have been trouble at the next long drive. First, he wished he had wired a dedicated one-hundred-ten outlet inside a column-mounted junction near the powerpack for a work light and a battery tender. Retrofitting is doable but ugly; running it during install is clean. Second, he wished he had installed a small drip pan under the powerpack from day one. Even a well-maintained pump weeps a little at seal changes, and the pan makes cleanup a wipe instead of a scrape.
