An RV and trailer service shop in Sioux City called us last spring after a year of debating whether to buy a used 2 post car lift out of a closed dealership auction or spec a new one from the ground up. They handle a heavy volume of tire rotation and wheel work on tow vehicles and light-duty pickups, and the shop foreman was clear about one thing — the lift had to earn its keep every single day. Twelve months and roughly two thousand vehicle cycles later, they invited us back for the first-year walk-through. The used lift they nearly bought — and why they walked away

The auction unit was a name-brand 10,000 pound overhead machine, roughly ten years old, with about two thirds of its expected service life left on paper. The number looked great. On paper the delivered price was about sixty percent of new. But when the foreman drove three hours to inspect it, he found three issues that killed the deal: the equalizer cables showed visible fraying and were past due for replacement, one hydraulic cylinder had a slow weep that meant seals at minimum, and the safety locks on one column had a stiff catch that suggested wear on the internal ratchet.

Add up cables, seals, locks, freight from the auction site, disassembly, reinstall, and a fresh anchor set into a new floor, and the used 2 post car lift landed within a few hundred dollars of new. New meant a fresh warranty, a fresh column-alignment guarantee, and a documented install by our team. Used meant unknown history and no recourse if a lock failed under a customer vehicle. That math is why we tell most commercial shops to buy new unless the used machine is under three years old with paperwork. A lift is not the place to save fifteen percent by inheriting someone else’s neglect.

Speccing the right two-post for tire and wheel volume

Tire and wheel work is a demanding pattern for any lift because the vehicle goes up, comes down, goes up again, and the arms swing under load pretty constantly. We recommended a 10,000 pound symmetric machine with clear-floor overhead architecture, dropped-end asymmetric-capable arms, and heavy-duty rubber pads. Their ceiling was fourteen feet three inches, so overhead was easy. Their concrete was a six-inch shop pour with rebar — no pads needed.

Cycle rate mattered more than raw capacity. We spec’d a lift with a duty cycle appropriate for continuous commercial use, not a residential unit rated for occasional lifts. Not every 2 post car lift is built for a shop that will cycle it forty times a day. Cheaper machines share components with home-garage models and start to see pump fatigue, hose weeps, and lock wear within eighteen to twenty-four months when a commercial shop leans on them. We steered them to a professional-grade unit with a longer warranty on the powerpack and a heavier pump. That single spec choice is the difference between two-year and ten-year service intervals in a busy tire bay.

Install week and the first hundred cycles

We installed on a Monday and Tuesday during their slowest week of the year. Anchoring took a morning, plumbing and electrical another few hours, cable routing and tensioning the rest of the first day. Day two was arm assembly, safety-lock verification, load testing, and staff training. Their two lead techs and one apprentice walked the machine through empty cycles, then loaded a shop pickup and ran ten full cycles under supervised weight.

The first hundred cycles are where a new lift tells you if the install was tight. We came back on day seven and re-torqued every anchor bolt, re-checked cable tension, and looked for any hydraulic weep around fittings. On this machine everything held. One anchor had walked less than an eighth of a turn — normal seating. Cables had picked up a hair of slack, also normal. No hydraulic issues. The apprentice had already logged forty-eight vehicle cycles in that first week without a single hiccup. That is the signature of a properly installed 2 post car lift running the workload it was designed for. Cheap installs and undersized machines show trouble in the first month; this one did not.

How the machine handles daily tire and wheel work

A tire tech’s day is repetitive: drive on, pad up, lift to knee, drop the wheels, lift to shoulder, install wheels, drop. Multiply by twenty vehicles. The arm design matters more than any other single feature at that volume. The drop-end telescoping arms on their unit swing easily under wheel-well pinch welds, and the pads adjust for the mix of trucks, SUVs, and light passenger cars that come through their door. Techs pad up in about fifteen seconds per vehicle.

The one adjustment we made at the six-month mark was to swap the standard rubber pads for a thicker urethane pad on both driver-side arms. Their techs pad the driver side first out of habit and those pads were wearing about twice as fast as the passenger side. Cheap fix, ten-minute swap. The bigger point: their 2 post car lift is now the most-used piece of equipment in the building. It has moved more vehicle weight in twelve months than the shop’s alignment rack has seen in five years, and it still cycles like the day we installed it. Volume plus the right spec equals honest ROI, and the foreman keeps his job.

What broke and what did not

In twelve months, exactly two things needed attention beyond scheduled inspections. First, one push-button switch on the powerpack developed intermittent contact around month eight. We replaced it under warranty at no charge and the machine was down for less than an hour. Switches are cheap consumables on any lift running commercial hours, and the fact that only one gave trouble in a year says the unit is holding up. Second, a set of arm-restraint gears developed a slight rattle at month ten and we swapped them out during a routine visit.

Everything else — cables, seals, hoses, cylinders, locks, motor, pump — is still on the original parts. That is what a properly spec’d machine looks like at twelve months of hard use. Compare that to what we hear from shops that bought bargain-bin imports: powerpacks failing at month six, seals leaking at month nine, cables needing replacement inside two years. The used auction unit they almost bought would probably have needed at least three of those repairs by now. Choosing new was the right call. Training the crew and building daily habits

New equipment fails when techs skip inspection habits. We spent the last hour of install day teaching all three techs the same pre-shift walk-around: check hydraulic fluid level through the sight glass, cycle safety locks empty, listen for any hiss or clunk, check cable tension by hand, and verify arm-restraint gears click into place before loading any vehicle. Ninety seconds per lift, once per shift. That habit is invisible until it saves someone.

They also adopted a written monthly log — a clipboard on the wall next to the lift where the tech on duty checks off inspection items and notes anything unusual. Six months in, that log caught the arm-restraint rattle before it became a problem. In a commercial shop, the log is worth more than the manufacturer’s warranty. It creates a paper trail for insurance, gives new hires a training tool, and gives the foreman visibility into how the machine is behaving between our annual visits. Any shop investing in a 2 post car lift should build the log habit on day one — not month twelve — and the whole crew should sign the checklist at every shift change.

Would they buy the same lift again

Short answer: yes, with one tweak. The foreman said he would spec the wider column spread the next time around. Their standard column spacing accommodates every vehicle they see today, but two customer trucks with wide-body dually rear ends barely thread through, and next year’s model-year updates keep adding width. A wider column option would future-proof the bay against another decade of vehicle growth. Everything else about the machine — capacity, arm length, powerpack, controls, safety-lock design — they would repeat exactly.

The bigger takeaway is one we share with every commercial shop weighing used against new. If you can inspect a used lift in person, the seller has paperwork, the machine is less than three years old, and every wear item is verifiably fresh, used can save real money. Absent all four of those conditions, used almost always ends up as new plus surprise repairs. New comes with warranty, install accountability, and a known baseline. For a shop that runs a 2 post car lift as a profit-generating tool rather than a hobby, that baseline is the whole point of the purchase.
