Alignment work on a 2 post car lift lives or dies on two things: pad flatness under load, and the electrical circuit that runs the powerpack. When a Davenport truck alignment specialist called us about upgrading his shop with two new commercial two-posts, the electrical scope turned into a bigger conversation than the lifts themselves. His shop’s 1970s panel could not carry the load, his utility feed was single-phase 200-amp, and the alignment rack he wanted to add on top of the lifts pushed the load calculation into three-phase territory. Here is what a full cost breakdown looked like when the electrical work is honest — because on most shops it is the surprise that eats the margin.

What power a 2 post car lift actually draws
A typical commercial 2 post car lift uses a 3 to 5 horsepower electric motor. A 3 HP motor at 220 volts single phase draws about 15 amps continuous and up to 40 amps peak at startup. A 5 HP motor draws 22 amps continuous and 60 amps at startup. Those numbers matter because your circuit needs to handle peak inrush without tripping a breaker, and your wire gauge needs to handle continuous draw without heating up.
Rotary specs their SPO15 with a 4 HP motor on a dedicated 20-amp 240-volt single-phase circuit, minimum 12 AWG wire. Challenger’s CL15 uses the same 4 HP motor and the same circuit requirements. If your run from the panel to the lift is over 50 feet, upgrade the wire to 10 AWG to keep voltage drop under 3 percent. On the Davenport shop the run was 68 feet, so we ran 10-gauge THHN in EMT conduit. Two lifts on independent circuits, each with its own breaker in the panel. Sharing a circuit between two lifts is a code violation and a bad idea. On any 2 post car lift install where the shop has more than one lift, plan for dedicated circuits per machine.
Single phase vs three phase: what your utility can give you
Most rural and residential utility feeds are single-phase 240 volts, which is what a 2 post car lift wants for a residential or light-commercial install. Single-phase 240 covers everything from a 9K home garage lift up through commercial 15K units and even some 20K machines. Three-phase power is more efficient for larger motors and is required by some heavy-duty lifts (30K and up) and by rotational equipment like tire changers and alignment racks.
The Davenport shop had a single-phase 200-amp service, which was adequate for two 15K two-posts but tight for the additional alignment equipment they wanted. The utility could deliver three-phase to that address, but the cost to upgrade the service drop and the transformer was $8,500 and would take 6 to 8 weeks. We looked at rotary phase converters as an alternative — a good 15 HP rotary converter runs $2,500 to $3,500 and creates synthetic three-phase from a single-phase feed. That was the path the shop chose, and it worked cleanly for their alignment rack and their air compressor. Panel upgrade cost for a Davenport alignment shop
The Davenport shop’s original panel was a 1970s Federal Pacific 200-amp with 30 slots — a brand that has been on the recall watch list for decades and that most inspectors want replaced when the shop touches anything electrical. Adding two dedicated 240V circuits for the new two-posts triggered a full panel replacement inspection. Total panel upgrade with permit, licensed electrician, and inspection came to $3,200.
That number is representative of what we see across northern Iowa, western Illinois, and eastern Nebraska for a service-panel refresh triggered by lift installation. It includes tearing out the old panel, installing a new 200-amp Square D QO or Siemens PL series, transferring existing circuits, and adding new breakers for the lift work. If the shop needs a service upgrade to 400 amps to support additional heavy equipment, add another $2,500 to $4,000 for the utility side and the meter can. Fused disconnects and code items your inspector wants
Every commercial two-post lift needs a lockable fused disconnect within sight of the powerpack — that is NEC 430 code and it is not optional. The disconnect can be a simple 30 or 60 amp fused switch mounted on the wall next to the lift column, or an integrated disconnect on the powerpack itself if the manufacturer offers one. Rotary and Challenger both offer factory disconnects as an option; most shops go aftermarket because a $95 Bussmann disconnect works just as well as a $300 factory unit.
Other inspector items: correct breaker sizing (not oversized to protect the motor), proper wire gauge for the run length and current draw, GFCI protection where required by local code, and grounding tied to the shop’s grounding electrode system. Some jurisdictions require a shop ground rod within 5 feet of the disconnect. The Davenport inspector wanted arc-flash labels on both disconnects and a load calculation on file showing the shop’s total demand did not exceed the 200-amp service. Passing inspection is easier when the electrician on the install knows lift work. The lift equipment itself: two 15K commercial two-posts
The Davenport shop bought two Rotary SPO15 symmetric two-posts, one for alignment prep and one for tire and wheel service that feeds the alignment bay. Both were spec’d with the same 15,000-pound capacity, three-stage front arms, two-stage rear arms, and 71-inch pad rise. Powerpack was the standard 4 HP single-phase Rotary unit on each.
Equipment cost per lift landed in the mid-teens for the base machine plus installation kit and shipping. Add-on options the shop chose: air-line kits (both lifts), drop-in truck adapters for medium-duty frames (front lift only), and a wall-mounted control console (both). Total per-lift with options was in the high teens. Two lifts, plus the alignment rack, brought the equipment side of the invoice to the low forties before install labor and electrical. That is a substantial investment for a small alignment specialist shop, but the math works if the shop runs both lifts consistently. At $95 to $130 per labor hour for alignment work, a productive alignment bay pays back a 2 post car lift within 18 to 24 months even after the electrical hit. Alignment rack integration on top of the lifts
Some alignment work is done on the shop floor with the vehicle on a drive-on rack. Some is done with a scissor lift integrated into the drive-on. And some is done by rolling wheel targets on a two-post lift, which is a workflow that has gained popularity for smaller shops that want alignment capability without a dedicated rack. The Davenport shop chose a hybrid: a Hunter drive-on alignment rack for their high-volume passenger car work and one of the two-posts for medium-duty truck alignment where the vehicle exceeds the drive-on rack’s rated capacity.
Integrating a two-post into an alignment workflow is not as simple as buying wheel targets and camera stands. The lift must sit on a truly flat concrete pad — variation of more than 1/8 inch across the pad footprint will throw off camera measurements. The pads themselves must be flat (screw-in adjustable pads make this easy) and the vehicle must be perfectly centered between columns. On the Davenport install we shot the entire lift footprint with a rotary laser and made minor grout-shim adjustments under the column bases to bring the whole assembly within tolerance. That is not standard install labor — it is alignment-shop install labor, and we charge for it because it takes real time. Adding the numbers: two Rotary SPO15 lifts in the high teens each, alignment rack in the mid twenties, electrical work at $8,700, install labor and site prep at $5,400, phase converter at $3,200 installed, arc-flash labels and permit fees at $600. Rough total: mid-sixties of thousands before financing.
