A third-generation family-owned garage in the Quad Cities called us about replacing an aging 2 post car lift they had been running for CV axle and half-shaft work. The lift was original to the shop, installed in the mid-1990s, and had reached the point where cable service parts were harder to source than the vehicles it was lifting. The current owner, the founder’s grandson, wanted a spec comparison across current models before he committed. What follows is the actual data we pulled together for him, model by model, with the arm reach numbers, lock spacing, and adapter selection that matter for daily CV axle work.

Why CV axle work is a spec-sensitive job

CV axle and half-shaft work on a modern front-wheel-drive vehicle happens at knee to chest height for the tech, with the wheel off and the outer joint fully articulated. That workflow is unforgiving of poor lock spacing on a 2 post car lift, because the tech wants the vehicle at exactly the height where the shaft comes out horizontally rather than at an awkward angle. Coarse lock spacing forces the tech to compromise, and the shaft binds during removal.

The other spec that matters is arm reach. A CV job means the front wheels are off, which usually means the arms are catching the frame at the front pinch welds close to the firewall. Short-reach arms can miss those pinch welds on longer-hood vehicles. A garage doing high-volume CV work needs a 2 post car lift with arms that can reach the frame comfortably on everything from a compact sedan through a full-size SUV.

Rotary SPOA10 spec sheet

The Rotary SPOA10 is a 10,000 lb asymmetric column with a 74-inch overall lift height, a minimum arm pad height of 3.75 inches, and telescoping front arms with a reach range of 30.5 to 51 inches. The lock spacing on the SPOA10 is fine through the working range, with mechanical locks every 3.5 inches through the primary lift envelope. That combination is well suited to CV axle work.

The service parts network on the SPOA10 is the best of any current 2 post car lift we install. We stock cables, sheaves, restraint gears, and cylinder seals for it in Ames and can overnight to the Quad Cities. For a garage that plans to keep this lift for the next twenty-five years, service parts availability is not a nice-to-have. It is the difference between a working bay and a stopped bay when a part eventually wears out.

Challenger CL10V3 spec sheet

The Challenger CL10V3 is a 10,000 lb asymmetric column with a 72-inch overall lift height, a minimum arm pad height of 3.9 inches, and front arm reach from 27 to 51 inches with the low-pro arm option. Locks are spaced roughly every 3 inches through the working range. The CL10V3 is a well-regarded 2 post car lift in commercial service across the country, and we install a lot of them.

Compared to the Rotary SPOA10, the Challenger runs slightly lower minimum pad height, which is a real advantage on lowered performance cars. The Rotary has a taller maximum lift height, which is a real advantage on tall SUVs. For a Quad Cities family garage seeing mostly sedans and light trucks in the CV axle work stream, either column will do the job well. The tiebreaker is usually service parts and installer preference in the region.

BendPak XPR-10AS spec sheet

The BendPak XPR-10AS is a 10,000 lb asymmetric column that shows up in a lot of home garage installs and in some smaller commercial shops. It has a 72-inch lift height and telescoping front arms with a reach range comparable to the Rotary and Challenger. Lock spacing is coarser than either of the commercial options above, at roughly 4 inches through the working range.

We list the BendPak here for completeness, but we would not recommend it as the primary 2 post car lift for a family-owned garage running full-time CV axle work. It is a strong home and hobby column, and it lifts vehicles safely, but for a commercial CV bay we would push the buyer toward the Rotary or Challenger for lock spacing and service network reasons. Neither of those is a knock on BendPak. It is a spec fit question, and the fit is better for the home garage market.

Arm reach and pinch weld geometry

CV axle work on a modern crossover puts the front pinch welds close to the firewall, which is where telescoping arm reach earns its keep on a 2 post car lift. A short-reach arm forces the tech to lift the vehicle from a compromise pad location, sometimes on a suspension component rather than a proper pinch weld. That is not what you want. Proper pinch weld engagement is a safety spec, not a preference.

Both the Rotary SPOA10 and the Challenger CL10V3 offer full-reach telescoping front arms that reach beyond 50 inches at maximum extension. That is enough to catch the pinch welds on every current North American crossover and SUV we have measured. The BendPak reaches nearly as far, so arm reach is not the primary decision driver for this family garage. Lock spacing and service network are.

Adapter kits and pad selection

Every 2 post car lift comes with a base adapter kit, and every commercial column supports additional adapter sets. For CV axle work on a mixed fleet, we recommend a base rubber pad set for daily use, a stack adapter set for lifted trucks, and a low-profile adapter set for lowered performance cars. That covers most of what a Quad Cities family garage will see in a decade.

Rotary and Challenger both offer these adapter sets as standard shelf items. We stock the common ones in Ames. Total adapter budget for a full commercial kit runs a few hundred dollars, and it is worth every dollar. Techs stop improvising with wood blocks or wrong-shaped pads, which improves safety and job time on every 2 post car lift ticket that comes through the bay.

The final call and what the shop bought

The Quad Cities family garage ended up buying a Rotary SPOA10 with the full commercial adapter kit and a spare cable and restraint gear kit on the shelf. Total install cost including the old lift removal and disposal, anchor work, and new electrical run came in at just under twenty thousand dollars. The bay was working within a week, and the CV axle throughput improved measurably in the first month.
