Buying a 2 post car lift for a rural farm shop outside Ankeny is a different problem than buying one for a commercial dealership, and if you skip the pre-purchase checklist you can end up with a lift that will not anchor to your slab or will not clear the equipment you park under it. We put this pre-purchase list together after visiting a Polk County farm shop last winter where the customer had already ordered a 12,000 lb overhead lift and had to cancel three days before freight because the ceiling was too low. Measure the ceiling — three times, in three places

The number-one 2 post car lift purchase mistake we see in Ankeny and the surrounding Polk County farm shops is buying an overhead-configuration lift when the ceiling cannot actually support it. Nominal ceiling heights in older pole barns and machine sheds are misleading; the actual clear height at the point where a lift arm swings can be 8 to 12 inches lower than the nominal, thanks to sagging joists, cross-bracing, and hanging lights. Measure with a tape from the finished floor to the underside of whatever is actually lowest in the lift footprint, and do it in three places: over the driver-side column location, over the passenger-side column location, and dead-center between where the vehicle will sit.

A standard-rise overhead 2 post car lift wants roughly 145 inches of clear ceiling — 12 feet one inch — and an extended-rise wants 176 inches. If you have anything less than 12 feet across all three measurement points, you buy the baseplate configuration instead. There is no shame in a baseplate lift; it works exactly as well for the vehicle owner, it just puts hydraulic lines on the floor between columns. In rural Polk County shops with 10- to 11-foot ceilings under insulated joists, the baseplate wins about 80 percent of the time.

Test the slab thickness before you fall in love with a spec

Farm shops in central Iowa were often poured in the 60s, 70s, or 80s as multi-purpose buildings, and the slab thickness is rarely documented. A 4-inch pour over compacted subgrade is the minimum for a 10,000 lb 2 post car lift, and 5-6 inches is preferred for a 12,000 lb or heavier. The only way to know what your slab actually is: drill a small test hole with a rotary hammer in an out-of-the-way corner and stick a bent wire in.

If the drill breaks through into dirt at 3.25 inches, that is your number. You have three options: buy a lighter lift matched to your slab, pour a pad extension for the columns, or core out under each column and pour a proper pier down to virgin soil. The pier option runs a few hundred dollars per column installed and buys you the strongest anchor bond available. For an Ankeny farm shop planning to run the lift for two decades, the pier is almost always the right call if your slab is under 4 inches. Doing this measurement before you order the lift saves you from a shipping-cancellation dance later.

Check the panel: single-phase or three-phase, and how many amps free

Almost every residential and light-commercial 2 post car lift runs on single-phase 220V at 30 amps. Rural Iowa farms typically have single-phase 220 available in the shop panel, but the number of free breaker slots and the panel’s total capacity are worth verifying before you order. Pop the panel cover, count the free double-pole positions, and check that the main breaker is sized to handle another 30-amp continuous load without exceeding 80 percent of its rating.

If you are planning to run a heavier commercial lift that wants three-phase, rural farms almost never have three-phase from the utility, and a rotary phase converter is your only path. A converter sized for a lift motor runs in the mid-hundreds to low four-figure range depending on horsepower and duty cycle. Budget for it if you are looking at commercial three-phase equipment. The other electrical detail to check is grounding — old farm panels sometimes have marginal ground bonding, and a lift motor is a large inductive load that benefits from a proper ground. A licensed electrician who has wired lifts before is worth the call for the panel check.

Map the arm swing envelope for your Ankeny bay geometry

The arm swing envelope on a 2 post car lift is a rectangle roughly 20 to 24 feet deep and 12 to 15 feet wide, and if any part of that rectangle is blocked by a wall, a shelf, a tire rack, or the tongue of a parked implement, you cannot service a vehicle in the position you thought you would. Draw the bay layout on a piece of graph paper before you order — column locations, arm-extended lengths front and rear, and the walk-around clearance you need around the vehicle.

In an Ankeny farm shop that also stores a planter or a sprayer in the same building, the arm swing rectangle often overlaps with implement storage. The fix is either to move the implement to a different bay during service work, or to spec column locations far enough from the storage side that the swing clears. This is the kind of layout question we walk customers through by phone before an order goes in. Match capacity to the vehicles and the equipment

For a rural farm shop the temptation is to spec a 15,000 lb or 18,000 lb 2 post car lift because you own a service truck and a heavy tow rig, but the everyday work is passenger cars, pickups, and half-ton to three-quarter-ton work trucks. A 10,000 lb lift handles all of that comfortably. A 12,000 lb lift adds a cushion for a loaded one-ton dually and is our default recommendation for a mixed-use farm shop. Above 15,000 lb, you are getting into heavy-duty configurations that cost significantly more and take up more bay space.

For CV axle and half-shaft work specifically, capacity is less important than pad geometry. Front-wheel-drive cars carry the CV joints on the front axles, and you want the front arms of your 2 post car lift positioned to leave the front wheel wells and lower control arm mounts fully accessible. Asymmetric arms with shorter front reach are the right call for CV work — the vehicle sits back in the lift geometry, the front is easier to access, and the doors clear the columns. Symmetric arms work fine too but you are reaching a bit farther into the wheel well.

Freight and unloading — do you have a way to get it inside

Freight to a rural Ankeny address is $400-600 typically, standard flatbed, three to five business days. Ankeny is close enough to Des Moines that most carriers handle it as a regular route with no rural surcharge. The unloading question is the one that trips up farm shops: the driver will lower the freight to the shoulder or your driveway, but they will not carry the columns into your shop building. If your farm has a skid steer with forks, that is the fastest tool. A tractor with a bucket works if you are careful about balance.

If you have nothing available, plan to rent a forklift for half a day — cheaper than any alternative that ends in a dropped column. A dropped column can crack a lift-gate, dent a driveway, and worst-case put a bent post into your install. For a farm shop delivery specifically, we usually recommend booking freight to arrive on a day when your tractor or skid steer is available and not out in the field. Do not schedule a 2 post car lift delivery for the middle of harvest week.

Sixth: confirm unloading equipment on delivery day; skid steer, tractor, or rented forklift. Seventh: schedule the electrician for the day before the lift installers arrive, not the same morning.
