Myth: Any Level Floor Will Work for a Two-Post Install
Forum wisdom says a level floor is a level floor and any bay with a level floor is ready for a 2 post car lift install. Field reality says level is a spectrum. We define usable level as within three-eighths of an inch across the column-to-column span, measured by a rotary laser. Anything worse than that requires shim stacks under the column base plates to bring the machine to plumb, and heavy shim stacks introduce their own risk over time because the shim interface can compress unevenly. In the Quad Cities shop, we measured the bay and found a slope of about three-quarters of an inch across the span.
That slope was outside our comfort zone for shim compensation alone. We recommended a targeted concrete floor grind on the high side of the column footprint to bring the two column base plates within tolerance without stacking too much shim material. The grind added a modest line item to the install but produced a lift that runs plumb under load and will not develop cable-tension asymmetry over the life of the machine. Myth: Ceiling Height Just Needs to Clear the Tallest Vehicle
The common assumption is that a 2 post car lift install only needs enough ceiling to clear the tallest vehicle you plan to service. That is not the full picture. You also need clearance for the overhead safety bar or the crossbeam, plus working clearance above the vehicle for tools and hands when the vehicle is at full lift height. The Quad Cities shop was working on Audi and BMW SUVs that ran taller at the roof rack than a standard sedan, and their bay ceiling was 12 feet 4 inches to the underside of the roof deck.
We ran the math on lift height plus tallest vehicle plus a tech reaching for a tool on top of the tallest vehicle. Match ceiling to actual vehicle mix, not to the general rating of the lift, and you avoid surprises.
Myth: CV Axle Work Does Not Need Special Arm Configuration
CV axle and half-shaft replacement is a specific kind of underbody work that benefits from arm reach in a specific way. The tech needs the wheel hanging free at full droop, which means the arms have to cradle the vehicle inboard of the suspension pickup points and the wheel needs unobstructed vertical space to drop. Standard arm configurations work fine for most sedans, but on some Audi and BMW all-wheel-drive platforms the ideal pad position requires extended reach or offset adapter placement. A 2 post car lift with limited arm swing forces the tech to compromise on pickup point choice.
For the Quad Cities shop, we spec’d a Rotary SPOA10 with the triple-telescoping front arm and a set of BMW-specific pad adapters. Myth: Electrical Just Needs a Standard 220V Outlet
Forum posts often say a 2 post car lift power unit runs off any standard 220V outlet. That is technically true for many models but misses the details that make an install clean. The disconnect needs to be within reach of the operator control station, the wire gauge has to match the peak amp draw with margin, the ground has to be bonded properly, and the circuit needs to be dedicated and not shared with a compressor or a welder that would create voltage sag during startup. On the Quad Cities install, the shop had a single 220V circuit that was already shared with a rotary compressor.
We had them add a dedicated 30-amp single-phase circuit for the lift, wired with the appropriate gauge for the length of the run and terminated in a disconnect within arm’s reach of the operator station. The electrician charged them a fair rate for the work and pulled a permit, which their landlord required. That combination gave them a clean electrical layout that would not fight the compressor for voltage during simultaneous startups. A shared circuit is the kind of shortcut that seems fine until the shop is busy and the lift stalls during a lift cycle because the compressor kicked on at the same moment.
Myth: A Local Handyman Can Install a Lift Just as Well
Every year we get a call from a shop that hired a local handyman to save money on a 2 post car lift install and now has a machine that behaves strangely.
