A 2 post car lift can be ordered with symmetric arms, asymmetric arms, or a versatile hybrid — and every mobile mechanic in the Des Moines metro area who has called us in the last two years has asked the same question about which one to pick. We installed a lift last summer for a mobile mechanic based out of Ankeny who does mostly exhaust and driveline work for local trucking companies, and the symmetric-versus-asymmetric decision on his 2 post car lift ate up more of the pre-purchase call than every other question combined. Here is the case study of how he made the choice and why it was the right one for his particular work mix.

What Symmetric and Asymmetric Actually Mean

Symmetric arms on a two-post are all the same length, and the columns face each other directly across the drive-through space. The vehicle sits centered between the columns with equal front and rear arm reach. Asymmetric arms are shorter in front, longer in the rear, and the columns are rotated about thirty degrees so the vehicle sits offset toward the front. The offset is what lets the driver door open fully without hitting the column, and it is the entire reason asymmetric exists as a category.

Neither design is objectively better. Symmetric has slightly more load capacity because the weight sits evenly over the column centers. Asymmetric has better ingress-egress for the operator. Which one you want depends entirely on how often you open the driver door while the car is on the lift, and how heavy your typical vehicle is compared to the lift's capacity rating.

The Ankeny Mobile Mechanic's Work Mix

The customer we are describing services light and medium-duty box trucks for a couple of local delivery fleets. His typical lift subjects are Ford E-Series vans, Isuzu NPRs, and the occasional F-350 dually with a service body. These vehicles all have big cabs, wide doors, and drivers who need to reach into the cab to grab paperwork or shift the transmission during service. Getting in and out of the cab while the truck is on the lift is a normal part of his workday.

That work pattern is a textbook argument for asymmetric arms on a 2 post car lift. A symmetric lift would put the front column two feet behind the driver door hinge, and the door would collide with the column on any full swing. Asymmetric solves that by rotating the columns and shifting the vehicle forward. He can open the door fully, climb into the cab, shift into neutral for a driveline test, and climb back out — all without ever touching the columns.

When Symmetric Is the Right Call Instead

If the Ankeny mechanic were only working on race cars, restoration projects, or trailers, we would have quoted symmetric. Race cars do not have doors that swing (the crew enters through the window or over the door). Restoration projects often have the doors removed entirely during body work. Trailers do not have driver doors at all. Every one of those use cases removes the reason asymmetric exists.

Symmetric is also the right call when the vehicle is going to sit near the maximum lift capacity. A 10,000 lb load on a 10,000 lb symmetric lift is a stable configuration. The same load on a 10,000 lb asymmetric lift is at spec but slightly closer to the edge, because the asymmetric geometry puts more torque on the columns. If you are commonly lifting near the limit, spec up to a 14,000 lb capacity or stay symmetric — do not sit at 100 percent capacity on a 2 post car lift with asymmetric arms.

Three-Stage Arms: The Feature That Makes Asymmetric Work

The other geometry decision on a modern 2 post car lift is arm stage count. Two-stage arms are shorter and simpler. Three-stage arms telescope further and can reach the pinch weld on a stretched pickup or the frame rail on a service-body truck. For the Ankeny mechanic, three-stage arms were mandatory — the F-350 with a service body has a long wheelbase and the pinch welds sit behind where a two-stage arm can reach.

Three-stage adds a modest cost — usually $150 to $300 over two-stage — and adds one more wear point (the extra sliding joint). We recommend three-stage for any mobile mechanic whose vehicle mix includes trucks. If you only do passenger cars, two-stage is fine and slightly more reliable long-term because there is one less joint to wear. Column Height and Baseplate Trade-Off in the Metro Area

Des Moines metro shops have a mix of ceiling heights. Newer commercial condos and metal buildings usually have twelve to fourteen feet. Older neighborhoods with converted residential garages might have eight to nine feet — those do not fit any full-rise lift and are candidates for a mid-rise scissor instead. The Ankeny mechanic's shop was an eleven-foot ceiling, which is the awkward middle where overhead cross-tube lifts are barely too tall and baseplate lifts fit comfortably.

We recommended a baseplate 2 post car lift with asymmetric three-stage arms. The baseplate design deletes the overhead cross-tube, which was the height-critical dimension in his shop. The hydraulic hose runs across the floor between the columns instead of over the top, and we routed it into a shallow surface-mount channel he had already installed in the concrete for another electrical run. Anchoring and Concrete Under an Asymmetric Layout

Asymmetric arms shift the vehicle center-of-gravity a few inches forward of a symmetric layout, and that changes the load distribution on the anchors slightly. In practice, both designs use the same anchor spec — 3/4-inch wedge anchors, five to six inches deep, torqued to the manufacturer's spec. But we always double-check the concrete depth on any 2 post car lift install because a marginal spot under one column can matter more when the load is not evenly distributed across the footprint.

The Ankeny shop had six-inch concrete throughout. That is plenty for either design, and the anchors set cleanly on the first attempt. If you are installing on marginal concrete (four inches or less), we recommend either pouring thickened footings under each column or stepping back to a mid-rise design. We do not install lifts on concrete we cannot verify — that is a safety line we do not cross for any customer regardless of relationship.

Twelve Months Later: How the Choice Held Up

We followed up with the Ankeny mechanic a year after install. His verdict on the asymmetric choice was direct: he uses the door-swing clearance a dozen times a day, and he has never once wished for the extra load capacity a symmetric would have offered. His heaviest daily vehicle is about 9,400 pounds — a comfortable margin under the 10K rating. The asymmetric layout matches his work perfectly, and if he had it to do over, he would order the exact same 2 post car lift again.
