A Rural Ankeny Farm Shop’s Seven-Step Pre-Purchase Checklist for a 2 Post Car Lift

A rural farm shop outside Ankeny called us this spring looking for a 2 post car lift for their converted machine shed. They service their own fleet — a couple of pickups, a Cummins-swapped one-ton, the farm’s SUV, and the family sedans — and they wanted a lift for oil changes and general maintenance that would last a couple decades without becoming a project itself. The owner had spent a career on tractors and combines and knew equipment well, but not commercial car lifts specifically. He asked for a pre-purchase checklist and a walk-through of the warranty coverage before he wrote a check. Here is the same checklist we gave him, in the same order we walked it.

Checklist item one: match the lift capacity to the fleet

The first item on any 2 post car lift purchase checklist is capacity. Add up the vehicles you actually need to service, look at the heaviest one, and buy a lift rated 20 to 30 percent above that number. For a farm shop with a Cummins-swapped one-ton at maybe 8,500 pounds curb, a 10,000-pound lift is right at the edge and a 12,000-pound lift gives comfortable headroom. Running a lift near its rated capacity every day accelerates wear on cables, hydraulic seals, and safety locks. Running it at 60 to 70 percent gives you a lift that will still be tight in twenty years.

The rural Ankeny shop had asked whether an 8,000-pound residential lift would work, since most of the fleet is much lighter. We said no. The Cummins truck alone is right at 85 percent of an 8,000-pound rating with any bed load or toolbox, and a farm shop always ends up lifting something unexpected — a neighbor’s truck as a favor, a project vehicle from a friend, a trailer with a heavier tongue than expected. Capacity headroom is cheap insurance, and the price difference between an 8,000 and a 12,000-pound lift is smaller than most shops assume. Buy the bigger one and be done with it.

Checklist item two: measure the ceiling and the concrete

The second item is the physical bay. Measure ceiling clearance at the exact intended install location — not the average of the whole shop. Look up and note the first obstruction. Farm machine sheds often have LED shop lights or a heater unit hanging lower than the peak of the ceiling. If your intended install spot has a clear window over 12 feet, an overhead-style 2 post car lift works. If you are between 10 and 11.5 feet, look at a baseplate model. If you are under 10, plan on relocating a fixture or picking a different bay for the install.

Then measure the concrete. Farm shop slabs vary wildly. Some are honest 4- or 5-inch pours with proper reinforcement. Others are 3-inch skim coats over dirt that were poured for machinery storage. Before ordering the lift, drill a small test core in the corner of the intended footprint and measure the actual depth. If the slab is thinner than 4 inches or shows visible cracking within 4 feet of the intended column bases, plan a slab cut and pour before the lift arrives. A cut-and-pour runs a couple thousand dollars and needs a week of cure time. Doing it after the lift is delivered doubles the pain.

Checklist item three: verify electrical service

The third checklist item is electrical. A commercial 2 post car lift pump needs a 208 or 230-volt single-phase drop, typically 30 amp, at the lift location. Some larger lifts and shops with three-phase service use 208 or 460-volt three-phase. Check what your farm shop actually has. Farm buildings often have older 240-volt service intended for well pumps or compressors, which usually works but needs to be confirmed with an electrician before install. If the service is 208-volt from a rural utility, some lifts will pump slower than spec unless the pump is optioned for the 208-volt input at order time.

The Ankeny farm shop had 240-volt single-phase already in the machine shed from an old grain leg circuit. We asked their local electrician to confirm the breaker size, the wire gauge back to the panel, and the panel capacity, and everything was in spec. That saved a service call. If you cannot confirm your electrical is ready before you order the lift, budget an electrician’s day rate on top of the install quote to bring service to the install location. That number can range from a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on distance and existing panel capacity.

Checklist item four: understand what the warranty actually covers

The fourth item is warranty. Commercial 2 post car lift models from Rotary and Challenger typically carry a five-year structural warranty on columns, arms, and the base structure, and a one- to two-year warranty on hydraulic components, electrical components, and moving wear items. Cables, pads, and consumables are not warrantied — they are expected wear items. Cosmetic paint issues are usually warrantied for six to twelve months. Manufacturer defects covered under warranty include hydraulic seal failure, motor failure, arm pin failure, safety-lock mechanism defects, and any structural crack in a warrantied component of the lift.

What is not covered: overload damage, improper install damage, damage from environmental exposure like extended outdoor storage, damage from welding through the lift structure, and damage from ignoring the maintenance schedule. On a farm shop specifically, one of the most common warranty voids is running the lift with a hydraulic reservoir that has never had a fluid change. Fluid changes are cheap and required. Skip them and you are out of warranty on any pump issue that follows. Ask us or the manufacturer for the exact warranty document before you buy so you know what you are getting.

Checklist item five: understand the claim workflow

The fifth item is the claim workflow, because a warranty is only useful if you know how to use it. On any 2 post car lift we sell, the warranty claim workflow is simple. We contact the manufacturer, open a claim on the shop’s behalf, ship the covered part directly to the shop, and either send a tech to install it or walk the shop through the swap if it is straightforward.

What speeds a claim: having the maintenance log, having proof of the install by a certified installer, and being able to describe the failure precisely. What slows a claim: no maintenance records, ambiguous failure description, and any prior modification to the lift. The farm shop outside Ankeny is now on their sixth month with the lift and has not had a claim, but they know exactly what to do if one comes up. That is the goal.

Checklist item six: pick the arm geometry for your workload

The sixth item is arm geometry. For a farm shop doing mostly oil changes and general maintenance on a mixed fleet — pickups, sedans, an SUV, occasional trailers — versymmetric arm geometry is almost always the right pick. Symmetric works if 80 percent of your work is pickups. Asymmetric works if 80 percent is passenger cars. Versymmetric handles both without compromise, and the small upcharge over straight symmetric or asymmetric is worth it on a lift you will own for two decades. The rural Ankeny shop went versymmetric without needing convincing after we walked through the tradeoffs.

The second decision on arms is pad kit. Standard rubber pads work for pickups and most passenger cars. If you occasionally lift a vehicle with a plastic pinch weld protector, add a polyurethane cup set. If you lift a trailer, add a trailer-adapter set. Pad kits are inexpensive on the front end and save real time and frustration in daily use. Checklist item seven: plan the 2 post car lift delivery and install day

The seventh and final checklist item is delivery. Once the pre-purchase checklist is complete and the order is placed, freight to central Iowa runs seven to eleven days. The lift arrives crated on a pallet, roughly six to seven hundred pounds of steel and components. Have a forklift or a large tractor with pallet forks ready at the shop for unloading. Walk the crate before signing the bill of lading, note any damage in ink, and store the crate in a covered space if the install is not happening the same day.
