Why This Shop Chose a 2-Post for Alignment
The northwest Iowa shop we worked with has three bays. Two were already scissor lifts on rolling frames — great for tires and quick services, useless for a full alignment. The third bay had been a hoist that predated the current owner and was pulled a decade ago after a cable snap. They had been sending alignment work out to a competitor and losing the customer forever half the time. The owner asked us the honest question: could a 2 post car lift work for alignment, or did he need a full drive-on scissor alignment rack that costs three times as much and eats an entire bay footprint?
Our answer was yes, with caveats. A two-post can do alignment if you add turn plates on the runways and a good bolt-on alignment kit, or if you use a portable alignment head system. It won’t compete with a dedicated scissor alignment rack for pure throughput, but for a three-bay shop doing 4 to 8 alignments a week alongside brakes, suspension, and general service, a 10,000-pound clear-floor 2 post car lift is the right tool. It also lifts trucks their scissor lifts couldn’t touch, which was worth real money in axle work and diff service.
The 2 Post Car Lift Itself — What We Specified
We spec’d a Rotary clear-floor symmetric, 10,000-pound capacity, with drop-end telescoping arms and truck adapters. The clear-floor design routes cables and equalizer through the overhead crossbar, keeping the bay floor open for jacks, transmission stands, and alignment tooling. Symmetric arms were the right call for this shop because they lift a wider mix of vehicles than asymmetric can accept, and because the bay geometry didn’t force the offset a shop needs to justify going asymmetric on this class of lift.
The truck adapter set was non-negotiable. This shop lifts three-quarter and one-ton trucks with running boards and stepped frames every week, and standard lift pads bruise sheet metal and slide off crossmembers. Truck adapters raise the pad, sit on the frame instead of the pinch weld, and stabilize the vehicle at the correct lift point. We also added a rolling air/hydraulic jack rated at 4,000 pounds for pulling axles and diffs. Between the lift, adapters, jack, and turn plates, the equipment stack landed in the mid to upper five figures — before install. That is where the cost breakdown starts, but nowhere near where it ends.
Concrete Prep and Slab Work
The old hoist location had a footing pour under it — 12 inches of concrete in a 5-by-10 pad, which was overkill in 1985 and still overkill today. That was the good news. The bad news was the surrounding slab was 4 inches at 3,000 PSI, and the shop wanted the new lift positioned two feet forward of the old footprint to open the alignment approach. That meant cutting, re-pouring, and letting cure. On a working shop this is a two-week hit — a week for cutting, forming, and pouring 6 inches at 4,000 PSI with #4 rebar; another week for cure before we anchor.
Concrete work landed in the low-to-mid four figures for this job. It could have been avoided by keeping the old footprint, but the workflow gain from repositioning paid for it within a year. If you are quoting a 2 post car lift for an existing shop, always core-sample the slab before you commit. We have seen shops pay for a lift, pay for install, and then eat a week of downtime for concrete work they didn’t budget. The core sample is a few hundred dollars and answers every question upfront — cheap compared to a rushed emergency pour.
Install Labor and Time on Site
Install ran a full two days with a two-person crew. Day one was column erection, overhead bar, hydraulics, cable routing, and anchor drilling. Day two was cable tensioning, safety lock testing, oil fill and bleed, arm installation, adapter fitting, and a first-lift run-through with the shop’s alignment tech. We also walked him through the ALI-style daily inspection and left the shop with a lock-out procedure and a torque wrench for the anchor bolts.
Install labor for a straightforward 2 post car lift in Iowa runs in the low four figures if the concrete is good, more if we are working around obstacles or upgrading electrical. This job was on the higher end because we scheduled around the shop’s live workflow and worked evening hours on day one to keep the neighboring bay productive. That is the kind of thing most quotes don’t itemize. When you compare install bids, ask specifically what happens if the crew has to leave and come back — some quotes are two solid days on-site, others are five split days at time-and-a-half. Both can be honest; you need to know which one you are buying.
Electrical, Air, and Support Equipment
The shop had a 200-amp panel with room for another 30-amp double-pole breaker, so the electrical side was clean — one dedicated 220-volt circuit to a rotary disconnect at the column, with a duplex 110 on the far column for droplights. An electrician ran that in half a day. If your panel is already full, or if the run from panel to lift is more than 50 feet, budget accordingly. We have seen electrical add a low four-figure number to a lift project when the panel needed upgrading.
Air was already piped to the bay in 3/4-inch black iron with drops at each column. The shop added a second regulator and filter at the lift specifically for the air-over-hydraulic transmission jack, and we tied a lockout on the air feed so the jack couldn’t be pressurized when the lift wasn’t in a safe state. Support equipment for this bay — the transmission jack, the alignment turn plates, the truck adapters, the wheel dollies — added up to a low five-figure number and is the part of a 2 post car lift budget that surprises new shop owners. Plan for it upfront, not after the lift arrives.
Alignment Rack Interface and Calibration
Because this two-post is doing alignment work, the calibration and setup piece matters more than on a general-service lift. We leveled both columns to a shared reference plane within a sixteenth of an inch across the bay. Turn plates sit on temporary stands under the front tires, and slip plates go under the rear during measurement. The tech uses a portable Hunter head system that clamps to the wheels — the same measurement kit he used on the scissor lifts, so no new alignment computer was needed. That saved a five-figure line item.
The tradeoff is that alignment on a 2 post car lift takes 10 to 15 minutes longer per vehicle than on a dedicated alignment rack. You are placing turn plates, reading the print, and adjusting under the vehicle instead of walking around it on runways. For this shop, doing four alignments a week, that time cost was worth roughly a bay-hour a month — nothing compared to the throughput they got back on other services. If you are doing thirty alignments a week, buy the dedicated rack. If you are doing four to eight, a two-post plus turn plates is the honest answer.
Total Cost Breakdown and What Moved the Number
The final all-in for this northwest Iowa install landed in the mid-five-figure range, spread across lift and adapters, concrete work, install labor, electrical, and support equipment. Roughly half of that was the lift and adapters, a quarter was concrete and install, and a quarter was electrical and support gear. That ratio holds for most commercial 2 post car lift projects we quote in Iowa, give or take five percent depending on site condition.
What moved the number, in order: concrete condition, panel capacity, and truck-adapter and jack selection. A shop with adequate 6-inch slab and 200-amp service will land at the low end. A shop needing a slab pour and panel upgrade will land at the high end. Support equipment is a fixed cost that doesn’t scale much with lift choice.
