Start with the slab: what your concrete can actually hold

A 2 post car lift transfers most of its load into two footprint plates roughly 12 inches square, which means each post pushes down through about 144 square inches of concrete no matter how heavy the vehicle. That is why the slab, not the ceiling and not the vehicle, is the first thing we ask about when a West Des Moines shop calls us. The rule of thumb for a 10,000 lb lift is a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, with rebar or wire mesh helping distribute the load; a 12,000 or 15,000 lb rig wants five or six inches, and the heavier commercial lifts prefer six inches minimum.

Once you get into three-quarter and one-ton trucks, a duty cushion of two or three thousand pounds matters, and that is where the 12,000 lb tier earns its keep. A 2 post car lift under-spec-ed for the vehicles is worse than a slightly-over-spec-ed one; you cannot add capacity later once the columns are anchored.

Symmetric versus asymmetric arms for oil pan access

For oil pan work specifically, the asymmetric versus symmetric question matters more than most buyers realize. A symmetric lift centers the vehicle between the posts, giving equal arm length front and rear; that means both doors clear the columns well, but you are stuck reaching a bit farther to slide under and access the pan. An asymmetric setup rotates the vehicle back roughly 30 degrees, putting the driver-side and passenger-side doors between the posts and giving you a shorter, more direct approach from the front.

For a restoration shop swapping oil pans, timing covers, and doing engine-out work, the asymmetric geometry usually wins. You are under the car with a floor creeper more than you are opening a door, so the door-clearance advantage of symmetric matters less. The catch is that asymmetric lifts require you to spot the car correctly, and if a customer parks their own vehicle on the lift you can end up with an unbalanced load. Overhead versus baseplate: what the ceiling decides

The overhead versus baseplate call is decided by your ceiling, full stop. The anchor bolts that ship with a 2 post car lift are typically 3/4-inch by 5-1/2-inch wedge anchors, and each one has a specified torque — usually around 150 ft-lbs — that must be hit and re-checked. Drill the hole with a hammer drill, blow the dust out completely (a squeeze bulb, not just compressed air, because compressed air pushes dust back in), and set the anchors dry unless the manufacturer says otherwise.

For older or thinner slabs, epoxy-set anchors like the Simpson SET-XP system give a much stronger hold than mechanical wedge anchors — a good option when your slab is on the thin side. We have installed lifts in West Des Moines shops with 3.5-inch slabs by cutting a two-foot square of old concrete out under each post, pouring a six-inch pier down to virgin soil, and setting fresh anchors into the new pour. It adds a day and a few hundred dollars, but it beats the alternative. The re-torque check at 90 days is non-negotiable on any install.
