A mobile mechanic working the Iowa-Illinois corridor called us last winter with a problem most road-based techs eventually run into: some jobs just do not work laying on gravel behind a customer’s garage. He had been building a growing side line of vintage restoration work – ’60s and ’70s American iron, mostly – and the metal work in particular was eating into his knees and his weekends. He wanted a 2 post car lift installed in a rented bay near Davenport so he could pull the harder jobs into a real shop. Why a Mobile Guy Needed a Fixed Bay

The mobile mechanic model works great for oil changes, brakes, and roadside diagnostics, but restoration is different. Cutting out rusted rockers, welding in new floor pans, or dropping a subframe all want the vehicle at chest height, stable, and reachable from every angle. Our client was doing this on jack stands in customer garages, and he was losing about a full day of productive time to setup, cleanup, and the ergonomic tax of working on the floor. His math was simple: a 2 post car lift would pay for itself inside eight months if it added even one restoration hour a day to his billable output.

The bay he rented in western Illinois was 14 feet at the ceiling, four-inch slab of unknown age, and single-phase 220-volt service already in the wall. We ran him through the same pre-buy questions we run every install through, and everything checked out except concrete age, which we resolved with a core sample the landlord agreed to. That set the stage for the model comparison, because now we knew we could install any 10K clear-floor 2 post car lift in the space without structural surprises. The next question was which brand and model.

Rotary SPO10 vs. Challenger CL10 Head to Head

The two machines that lead our 10,000 lb commercial-grade quote conversations are the Rotary SPO10 and the Challenger CL10. Both are American-made, both carry ALI Gold certification, both have a proven arm design and cable system. On paper they look nearly identical: symmetric clear-floor 10K rated, similar rise time, similar arm reach, similar column height. The differences show up in the details. Rotary’s arm restraints and pad design are the industry reference point; if you want the lift most other lifts are compared against, you buy Rotary. Challenger’s CL10 comes in typically a few hundred dollars less at MAP and shares most of the DNA – a lot of the components trace back to the same engineering family.

For a mobile mechanic putting one 2 post car lift into a rented bay, budget matters and so does parts pipeline. We showed him our stock of consumables for both brands – arm pins, restraint gears, cable sets, hydraulic seals. Both are well supported. Challenger’s CL10 won on price by roughly 8 percent; Rotary’s SPO10 won on “nobody ever got fired for buying it.” He picked the Rotary. Restoration customers see the badge and it moves the trust needle, which matters when he is quoting a floor-pan job on a stranger’s Camaro.

BendPak XPR-10S in the Same Class

The third model we compared was the BendPak XPR-10S, a symmetric clear-floor 10K machine that shows up in a lot of home-shop conversations. It is a well-built lift and BendPak’s fit and finish is genuinely nice. Features include an expandable top beam accommodating wide or narrow drive-thru configurations, double-telescoping screw pads, and a padded overhead safety shutoff bar. For a home garage or a serious enthusiast, the XPR-10S is a legitimate answer.

In a commercial-adjacent context like a mobile-mechanic-turned-shop-owner, we lean toward Rotary or Challenger for a couple of reasons. First, the parts pipeline for BendPak runs through a different distribution channel than the two American commercial brands, and our stock depth on Rotary and Challenger arm pins and cable sets is higher. Second, ALI Gold on the XPR is model-specific and we have to check the exact configuration each time. For a rented bay where downtime means an unhappy landlord and lost billable hours, we typically steer clients toward the deeper parts pipeline. He agreed. The XPR-10S came off the shortlist without any real drama.

Cable Routing and Overhead vs. Baseplate

His bay had 14 feet of ceiling, which is enough for either an overhead-connected or a baseplate 2 post car lift. Overhead machines route the safety cables and hydraulic hose across a top beam between the columns, tripping a shutoff bar if a tall vehicle contacts it. Baseplate machines put the crossover at the floor between the columns, keeping the ceiling completely clear. In a bay with 14 feet of ceiling and no future overhead needs, both were viable, but he had ambitions to add a jib crane on one wall someday for engine pulls.

A jib crane needs an unobstructed ceiling to swing under. That decision, made in front of a whiteboard with a marker, tipped us to a baseplate 2 post car lift. The baseplate crossover ridge is a real thing to walk over between the columns, but for a solo tech running one vehicle at a time, it is not a bad trade. He had already been living with a wheeled tool cart and had a plan to route it around the crossover. The overhead-clear ceiling won the argument in less than five minutes of conversation.

Arm Reach on 60s and 70s Iron

The pad-reach question is where restoration work gets interesting. Modern unibody cars have well-documented lift points, usually a pinch weld or a plastic-covered reinforcement. 1960s and 1970s American iron often has a full frame with obvious pad points, but the wheelbase is long enough that arm reach becomes a real spec. A 1972 Ford station wagon has a wheelbase over 120 inches; a Rotary SPO10’s rear arms extend to about 60 inches at max. That works, but it does not leave much margin.

We put his three most common project cars on a scaled floor plan and marked pad points against the SPO10’s advertised arm envelope. Everything fit, but two of his cars needed the rear arms near their outer limit. That is not a safety problem – it is designed to work at max reach – but it does mean pad placement takes an extra minute per vehicle. He accepted that trade in exchange for the badge and the parts pipeline. If he had been doing pickups and long-wheelbase SUVs primarily, we might have pushed toward a 12,000 lb machine with longer arms, but the 10K SPO10 matched his mix well.

Delivery to the Iowa-Illinois Corridor

Freight from our Iowa warehouse across the river into western Illinois is straightforward on paper and interesting in practice. Common carriers cross the state line without ceremony, but delivery windows can slip when a truck runs late from Chicago. We booked the shipment with a five-day window and a liftgate option in case his bay landlord’s forklift was unavailable that morning. The pallet arrived on day four, the forklift showed up an hour ahead of the truck, and unloading took under 15 minutes.

Our install crew drove over the next morning. Anchor drilling, column erection, hydraulic bleed, cable calibration, and the first empty cycle test took about six hours. He watched the whole thing and asked good questions. By late afternoon the machine was calibrated, and his first customer vehicle – a rusty 1969 Chevelle – went up on the pads the following Monday. Total time from order to first lift was 19 days. That is normal for our Iowa-corridor installs, and the timeline held because we had already sorted concrete, electrical, and freight before the order shipped.

Six Months In: What He Uses Every Day

He called six months later for a spare cable set and a second pair of drop-in pad extensions. Both are wear items on a heavily used 2 post car lift, and stocking them means a two-hour swap when something wears rather than a two-week freight delay. His billable hours were up, his knees were happier, and he had taken on two additional restoration projects that he would not have quoted from the road. The machine had held tight against a busy schedule and he had no complaints.

The pattern he followed – compare two or three real commercial-grade models, pick the one with the deepest parts pipeline, and pre-solve site conditions before ordering – is the same pattern we recommend to every mobile mechanic transitioning to a fixed bay. A 2 post car lift is a ten-year decision, and the shop that runs around it should shape it, not the other way around.
