Our first customer to buy a 2 post car lift for an RV and trailer service shop in southwest Iowa was a guy running a two-bay operation off a gravel road outside Council Bluffs, and the whole install-through-first-year story is one worth telling. He walked in wanting a lift big enough to hoist the tow vehicles that pulled the trailers he serviced, but small enough to fit a shop building that started as a pole barn in 1978. What follows is the actual timeline — site survey, delivery day, install week, and the differential fluid job that broke the lift in — and the pieces we would do differently a second time around.

The site survey call and what southwest Iowa slabs told us

The site survey started on the phone with a set of measurements he had scratched on the back of an oil filter box: 24 feet wide, 40 feet deep, 12 feet 6 inches to the joists. When we visited two weeks later, the numbers on the box turned out to be the outside dimensions of the pole barn, not the inside working area; the actual clear width between posts was 21 feet and the clear ceiling under the joist plane was 11 feet 8 inches. That difference decided the whole spec — the overhead 2 post car lift he wanted was out, and a baseplate configuration was in.

The slab was original 1978 pour, roughly 4 inches thick over compacted clay, with wire mesh visible where the previous owner had drilled to run air lines. That is workable but marginal for a 12,000 lb lift, and we walked him through the option of coring under each post to add a six-inch pier. He chose to pier both columns, which added a day and eight hundred dollars to the install budget but bought him twenty years of anchor life. Southwest Iowa shops built in the 60s and 70s regularly show this exact slab profile, and the pier option is the answer we recommend most often.

The freight window and the day the truck showed up wrong

Freight was booked for a Tuesday delivery window between 10 AM and 2 PM. The truck actually arrived on Wednesday at 7 AM with no phone call, and the driver expected the shop to be open. Our customer was still at the coffee shop when the driver started calling; by the time he made it out to the shop the truck had been sitting for forty minutes. The lesson is that freight windows for a 2 post car lift are optimistic estimates, not commitments, and you want to plan the receiving day around whatever the carrier tells you plus 24 hours on either side.

Unloading went smoothly because he had rented a skid steer with forks the day before, on the assumption that a fork attachment was cheaper insurance than trying to manhandle 500-pound crated columns. The overhead beam and arms came in separate boxes and were easy to move by hand; the columns needed the skid steer. Total unload time was about 45 minutes. His mistake was not clearing the receiving area first — he had to move a customer’s trailer twice to make room, which cost another half hour. For a shop in southwest Iowa where trailers stack up around every bay door, clear the delivery zone the day before.

Install week: two days that stretched to three

Install is scheduled as two full days for a 2 post car lift with pier work under the columns. Day one is coring, forming, pouring, and letting the concrete set overnight; day two is anchoring, standing the columns, running the hydraulic lines, wiring the power unit, and testing the lift through a full cycle with no vehicle. On this project, day two turned into day three because the overhead beam brackets had shipped with the wrong bolt pattern from the factory and we had to source replacements from the local Fastenal in Council Bluffs.

That kind of hiccup happens on maybe one out of every fifteen commercial installs. It is not the norm, but it is common enough that you want to leave the third day open on your schedule and not plan a customer job for the same afternoon the lift goes in. The customer took a half day off work and lost about six hundred dollars of shop revenue by being closed a third day. Not the end of the world, but real. Once the beam was mounted, arm installation went in ninety minutes and the first hydraulic cycle came up clean with no leaks.

The first vehicle on the 2 post car lift and the shakedown checklist

The first vehicle on a new 2 post car lift is always something safe and light, and in this case it was the owner’s own half-ton Silverado. Empty bed, empty cab, driven slowly onto the pads. Lift six inches, walk around, listen. Any squeak, any hiss, any drop of fluid gets investigated before you go higher. On this shakedown the front driver-side arm pin was slightly under-torqued and made a soft click on the first cycle; a quick check with the torque wrench and it was fixed.

Full-height shakedown means running the lift up to top, holding for 30 seconds, lowering onto the mechanical locks, then holding again. Every cylinder gets checked for a weep, every hose gets checked for a bulge, every anchor bolt gets a torque re-check. The shakedown checklist takes about 45 minutes on a new install and it is the last thing you want to skip. On our customer’s lift everything checked clean after the arm pin fix, and by lunchtime the same day he was ready to spot a paying job. The paying job we scheduled first was a differential fluid change on an F-350 dually.

The first real job — differential fluid on an F-350 dually

The first real paying job on the 2 post car lift was a rear differential fluid change on an F-350 dual-rear-wheel diesel — customer’s tow rig for the fifth-wheel he serviced. That truck runs about 8,600 pounds curb weight, well under the 12,000 lb rating, and the wheelbase fits the arm envelope comfortably. Spotting was straightforward: front arms under the frame rails just behind the front wheels, rear arms under the frame rails just ahead of the rear axle, dual-wheel version of the pad because the rear tires are wider than a single-wheel truck.

Lift height for a differential drain and fill on a dually is about eight inches under the pumpkin — enough to get a drain pan under the plug and a fill gun up to the fill port. The whole job took forty minutes and used two gallons of 75W-140 synthetic. From a workflow standpoint the customer said it felt like the shop had been operating with one hand tied behind its back for the previous five years; a differential fluid change on jack stands is a thirty-minute set-up-and-tear-down that a lift compresses to a two-minute up-and-down. That is where the payback lives.

Month three: the first squeak and what it turned out to be

Three months in, the customer called us about a squeak on the passenger-side arm pin when raising a specific truck. It was intermittent, only happened on trucks over 6,000 pounds, and went away with a shot of lithium grease into the pin fitting. That is a normal wear-in symptom on a 2 post car lift — the bronze bushings need to bed in, and until they do a dry pin under load will complain. He greased both arm pins as part of monthly maintenance from then on and the squeak did not come back.

The other item that showed up in month three was a slow drift on the raise cycle — the passenger side moving about half an inch faster than the driver side. That is the equalization cables stretching very slightly during break-in, which is expected. A ten-minute cable tension adjustment through the tensioner nuts on top of the columns brought both sides back in sync. Neither of these was a warranty problem, they were both break-in items that we walk every new owner through. If a shop calls in the first six months with a squeak or a drift, we talk them through the adjustment on the phone.

Year one on the 2 post car lift: what we would tell anyone starting today

A year in, the customer’s 2 post car lift has run something like 900 cycles — his shop does about four lifts a day on average, five days a week, plus the occasional Saturday. Nothing has failed. He has replaced hydraulic fluid once at the ten-month mark on a preventive schedule, and he has regreased pins quarterly. The pad rubbers show minor scuffing but no cracking; the anchor bolts held their torque on the annual re-check. If he could do the year over, he says he would have skipped the extra half-day of trailer moving on delivery day and would have booked the electrician for the day before rather than the day of install.

For any RV and trailer service shop in southwest Iowa looking at their first commercial lift, the year-one takeaway is that the equipment is not the risk — the shop prep is. Get the slab surveyed honestly, book the install as a three-day window not a two-day, and have the electrical done before the freight lands.
