Why an RV shop needs a real automotive lift

RV and trailer service shops spend most of their time on the RV itself, but the tow vehicles that pull those RVs come in for wheel bearing service, brake work, and pre-season inspections at nearly the same rate as the RVs. Historically that work happened on jack stands or on a portable trolley jack because a full 2 post car lift was seen as an unnecessary luxury. The six-month follow-up visit

We came back in October for the six-month follow-up. Anchor torque re-check, cable tension inspection, hydraulic fitting weep check, cylinder drift test, safety-lock function test. Two of the eight anchor bolts had taken a small torque loss and we brought them back to spec. One hydraulic fitting was weeping slightly and we snugged it. Cables were fine, cylinders showed no drift, safety locks engaged cleanly. Total visit time was about ninety minutes and it caught issues that would have grown into problems by the end of the second year.

What the owner remarked on during the visit was how much the machine had reshaped the shop’s workflow. Wheel bearing jobs that used to be scheduled around technician bandwidth were now scheduled around customer availability, because the setup time was so short. Brake pad swaps on tow vehicles happened in the same bay as the wheel bearing work with no reconfiguration. The technician’s back complaints from months of jack-stand work had disappeared.
