Myth: Overhead Is Always the Better Configuration

That lets the tech see the roof of the vehicle clearly during the walk-around portion of the inspection, which matters for spotting rust, moisture damage, or aftermarket accessories that affect inspection outcome. Overhead crossbars can partially block the tech’s view of the roof during certain motions. For inspection workflow, the baseplate visibility win is real, and the trip-hazard downside is manageable with good bay layout.

Myth: Ceiling Height Is the Only Consideration

Forum posts often reduce the overhead-versus-baseplate decision to ceiling height alone. Ceiling matters, but it is not the only factor. Other factors include bay layout around the lift, workflow patterns for the tech, tool storage placement, and vehicle traffic through the bay. A state inspection bay in a busy shop might have vehicles queued outside the bay door, techs walking through with clipboards, and floor jacks moving in and out. All of that motion interacts with the lift configuration. A crossbeam at floor level changes how tool carts and creepers roll through the bay.

Fumbling through a mismatched adapter box costs the tech a minute or two per inspection, which sounds small until you multiply by thirty inspections a week. That is an hour of tech time lost weekly to adapter mismatch, or roughly fifty hours a year.
