Myth: All 10,000 lb Two-Posts Are Basically the Same Lift
The single loudest myth we hear from shop owners is that a 10,000 lb 2 post car lift is a commodity, so pick the cheapest. That is wrong at exactly the level a European specialty shop cares about. The four 10,000 lb models we sell most, the Rotary SPOA10, the Challenger CL10, the BendPak XPR-10S, and comparable Atlas offerings, have measurably different arm restraint systems, adapter designs, and column steel thickness. On a European chassis where the lifting pad has to hit a specific pinch weld reinforcement, the adapter length options and pad stack heights matter enormously.
The Rotary SPOA10 in particular has a triple-telescoping front arm that gives our Council Bluffs shop customer the pad reach he needed to align the arm underneath a low-slung Porsche without repositioning the vehicle. The Challenger CL10 uses different pad stack heights standard, which some techs prefer for BMW pinch welds. The BendPak XPR-10S has a slightly wider standard column spread. Myth: Symmetric vs Asymmetric Only Matters for Door Clearance
Ask ten shop owners why they picked a symmetric or asymmetric 2 post car lift and half will say door clearance. That is only one factor. The other factor, and the one that matters more for suspension work, is where the vehicle sits relative to the columns and how much room the tech has to swing tools inside the arms. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns 30 degrees so the vehicle sits behind the column centerline, opening the front-door swing. That helps a tech getting in and out of the driver seat but it also shifts where the arms load the vehicle.
For a European-marque specialty shop doing suspension and shock replacement, we usually recommend a symmetric configuration or a versymmetric configuration that lets the tech choose. Suspension work involves a lot of walking around the vehicle with wrenches, spring compressors, and shocks, and symmetric column placement gives you cleaner room on both sides. Asymmetric is great for a general shop where door swing matters more than arm work. Neither is universally better. The right answer depends on your workload mix, and any dealer who tells you otherwise is selling one configuration because they have it in the warehouse.
Myth: Adapter Stacks Are an Afterthought
The 2 post car lift ships with a standard adapter stack. That is where most shops stop. For European suspension work, you are going to need at least three different adapter configurations to handle BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche pinch weld variations, plus rubber pads for exotics with underbody protection panels. Skip this and your tech starts stacking wood blocks on top of the pad stack, which is dangerous and also embarrassing when the customer walks into the shop. Adapter kits are a small line item on top of the lift and a huge quality-of-life upgrade for the tech.

Myth: Cable-Driven Lifts All Behave the Same at the Top of Travel
Every 2 post car lift on the market uses hydraulic cylinders on one column and cable equalization on the other, with the top of travel being where cable stretch and cylinder synchronization matter most. Cheaper lifts show visible drift at the top of travel, where one side sits a quarter inch higher than the other. That drift is not just cosmetic. On a suspension job where the tech is running spring compressors on both sides at once, an uneven lift means the vehicle is not truly level, which means the spring loads are unequal, which means the compressors act differently. That is a safety problem, not a preference problem.
The premium models from Rotary and Challenger use tighter cable specifications, better cable tensioners, and in some cases dual-cylinder synchronization. On a good SPOA10 or CL10, the top of travel is within an eighth of an inch side to side under load. On a bargain lift, you can see a half inch of drift after year three. For European-marque suspension work where precision matters, the extra spend on cable and synchronization quality pays back in cleaner jobs and fewer torque-spec disputes with customers who notice everything.
Myth: Capacity Ratings Are Conservative So 10K Handles Everything
Manufacturers rate 2 post car lift capacity conservatively, but that does not mean a 10,000 lb rating is fine for every vehicle in a European specialty shop. Sprinter vans, some AMG-package Mercedes wagons, and armored variants can push past 8,000 pounds curb weight before you add tools and jack stands. A 10,000 lb rating gives you thin margin on those vehicles. A 12,000 lb rating gives you real margin and lets the tech work confidently instead of doing curb-weight math in the bay every time an unusual vehicle rolls in.
For the Council Bluffs shop, we walked through his vehicle mix and found roughly 15 percent of his monthly workload came in above 6,500 pounds. That was enough to recommend stepping up from 10,000 lb to 12,000 lb capacity on the 2 post car lift. The upcharge over a similarly built 10,000 lb model is modest, and the peace of mind and future-proofing are substantial. If your shop touches Sprinters, armored SUVs, or heavier EVs even occasionally, the 12,000 lb class is worth the conversation. Do not size a lift for the average vehicle. Size it for the top 15 percent of your workload.
Myth: The Same Lift Fits Any Bay
The Council Bluffs shop had a 12-foot ceiling and 22 feet of bay width. He assumed every 10,000 lb 2 post car lift on the market would slot into that bay without any modification. In reality, the Rotary SPOA10 he was considering has an overhead crossbar height that leaves comfortable working room under a 12-foot ceiling. The BendPak XPR-10S in the standard configuration has a slightly different overhead height, and the taller-column variant would have tucked closer to his roof deck than he wanted. These are the details you find out on a site survey, not from a spec sheet download.
We laser-measured his bay before recommending anything. The measurement showed 12 feet 1 inch to the underside of the roof deck, minus 4 inches for the deck itself, giving a functional 11 feet 9 inches of clearance. That was enough for a standard overhead SPOA10 with about 6 inches of clearance above the crossbar. The wrong lift in the same bay would have needed a crossbar cut, which is a modification we will not do under any circumstances because it voids the warranty and compromises the safety design. Measure first. Buy second.
