A mobile mechanic who wanted to build a fixed base for tire service and light wheel work called us last spring about installing a 2 post car lift in a leased Quad Cities bay. He needed the lift in the ground fast, had a forklift on site for unloading, and wanted to know what the freight and install logistics actually look like when you buy from an Iowa supplier and drop into a rented shop. This is the write-up of that job — freight, unloading, install, and the first three months of running tire rotations on the new lift.

The customer, the bay, and the vehicle mix
The customer had been running mobile tire service out of a service truck for three years and was ready to add a fixed location for the higher-margin work — mounted-and-balanced sales, rotations, brake-inspection combos, and the occasional pull-and-repair on a run-flat. His lease was on a small commercial bay on the Iowa side of the Quad Cities with 12-foot ceilings and a slab of unknown vintage. He wanted a 2 post car lift because rotations on a scissor are slower than wheels-off on a real 2-post, and he needed the geometry to be right the first time.
His vehicle mix skewed toward late-model half-ton pickups and mid-size SUVs — the exact profile that pushes a home lift to its limits and makes a commercial-grade unit worth the money. We spec’d a 10,000-pound overhead 2-post with symmetric-versa arms, drop-end front, double-telescoping screw pads. That mix handles everything he was likely to see in a Quad Cities tire bay for the next 15 years without leaving anything on the table. Freight, install, and setup was the next set of questions.
Freight from Iowa to the Quad Cities bay
A commercial 2 post car lift ships in two crates — one column and hardware crate, one accessory-and-power-unit crate — plus a shrink-wrapped arm bundle. Combined shipping weight runs 1,400 to 1,800 pounds depending on model. Freight comes on an LTL common carrier with a lift-gate option if the customer doesn’t have a forklift. Our customer had a forklift on site, so we skipped the lift-gate charge and saved him a few hundred dollars.
The pallet dimensions matter for LTL. The column crate is long — around 12 feet — which triggers dimensional-weight pricing on some carriers. We handle the freight quote in-house rather than sending customers to figure out LTL themselves, and we build the crate configuration to keep the shipment in a single truck. Delivery to the Quad Cities from our Ames warehouse ran about three business days from order confirmation. The customer met the truck at the bay with his forklift, unloaded the crates himself, and staged them inside the shop before our install crew arrived two days later. That saved him a full day on the schedule.
Unloading with a forklift: the small details
If you have a forklift on site — which our customer did — unloading a 2 post car lift crate is straightforward but there are a few things worth naming. The column crate has to be lifted from the long axis, not the short one, or the forks will twist the frame. The accessory crate is heavy but compact and any 3,000-pound-class forklift handles it easily. Don’t try to unload with a pallet jack alone — the column crate weight and length make it awkward and there’s a real risk of dropping it on gravel or asphalt outside the bay.
If you don’t have a forklift, order the lift with a lift-gate delivery and plan for the driver to set the crates on the ground outside your bay door. From there you’ll need a way to get them inside — a tractor with pallet forks, a rented forklift for a half-day, or a small crew and a couple of appliance dollies for the accessory crate. The column crate really does need a forklift or tractor. We advise on this before the order ships so nothing gets stuck in a parking lot on delivery day. Small logistics, but they matter on a project 2 post car lift install where downtime costs the customer money.
Install day on a rented bay slab
The slab under our Quad Cities customer’s bay turned out to be about 4.5 inches of decent-quality concrete — we cored it before the install to confirm. That was enough to anchor the columns directly without needing new pads. If it had come back at 3 inches or the PSI had been low, we would have saw-cut and poured two 6-inch pads under the column footprints. That’s an extra half-day of work and a few hundred dollars in materials, and it’s the difference between a 2 post car lift that stays anchored and one that doesn’t.
The install itself took our crew about six hours: set both columns, plumb, torque anchors to 150 ft-lbs, run the hydraulic hose and equalization cables through the overhead beam, wire the 220V single-phase power unit, fill and bleed the hydraulic system, cycle the lift ten times empty and three times under a test vehicle, and walk the owner through operation and daily checks. He asked good questions. That’s who you want to sell a lift to — the owner who wants to understand the safety cams before the first customer car goes up.
Tire service ergonomics on a real 2-post
Once the lift was live, the customer started running tire rotations on it the same week. The productivity jump versus his old drive-on ramps was immediate: a rotation that took him 25 minutes on ramps dropped to about 12 minutes on the 2 post car lift because he could pull all four wheels simultaneously, inspect brakes at the same time, and offer the customer a written brake report as an upsell. That single ergonomic change added roughly $30 to $60 to his average ticket without adding shop time.
The drop-end front arms were the specific spec that mattered on his mix. He works on a lot of half-ton pickups with running boards and factory air dams, and being able to swing arms under those obstacles without hitting anything is what made the lift feel professional-grade instead of just adequate. He’s mentioned to us more than once that he wishes he’d added the drop-end front sooner instead of debating the option at quote time. That’s typical — the arm-envelope upgrades pay for themselves inside the first quarter.
The first three months: what actually broke
Three months in, we came out for the 90-day check-in. Nothing was broken. The cables had stretched a hair — normal for a new install — and we adjusted the equalization by half a turn. The hydraulic reservoir was still at proper level. Anchor bolts torqued to spec. Safety cams engaged crisply on both columns. That’s what a properly installed and properly spec’d 2 post car lift looks like at 90 days: a five-minute check that finds nothing meaningful.
What did surprise the customer was how much more work he was pulling in specifically because he had a lift. Customers walking in for a rotation were asking about alignment (we referred those out — different equipment), brake service (his margin business), and shocks. Having a real 2-post in the bay upgraded how people perceived the shop, which translated into higher-ticket work. He’s now looking at a second bay build-out and asking us to quote a mid-rise for tire mounting alongside the 2-post for wheels-off work. That’s the trajectory when you buy a lift that fits your actual use case.
What we’d do differently on the next mobile-to-fixed conversion
Looking at the whole install, there are two things we’d recommend to any mobile mechanic going from a truck to a fixed bay with a 2 post car lift. First, spend an extra day coring the slab before you commit to a specific lift model. A slab that fails spec doesn’t kill the deal — it just means you need to plan for pad pours and factor that into the timeline. Not knowing means the install crew shows up and finds a problem, which is the worst-case scenario for schedule.
Second, buy the arm-envelope upgrades on the front end. Drop-end front arms, double-telescoping pads, and versa-symmetric arm options cost less at order time than they do as retrofit parts later. And they change what the lift can do every single day. Skimping on the arms to save a few hundred dollars is the mistake we see most often, and it’s the one that shows up as regret 90 days in. Everything else — freight, install, first-year service — is manageable if you plan for it. The arm spec is the one call you can’t easily walk back.
