Step One: Confirm Your Ceiling Height Honestly
The single biggest killer of hobby lift purchases is a ceiling that does not clear. A 2 post car lift needs a ceiling that clears both the top of the columns and the top of the tallest vehicle you will lift at full extension. Most residential garages in the West Des Moines area come in around 8 to 9 feet of clear ceiling, which is genuinely too low for most standard-height lifts. If your ceiling is under 10 feet, you are shopping in a narrow band — low-rise or scissor lifts might make more sense than a full two-post.

Step Two: Verify Your Concrete Depth and Age
A 2 post car lift transfers roughly ten thousand pounds of clamping force into the slab at each column anchor. That means your slab needs to be at least four inches thick, three thousand psi concrete, and free of major cracks or old expansion joints running under the anchor pattern. Newer garages built to modern code usually meet this. Garages built before about 1990 often do not. Our customer’s garage was a 2018 build with a documented 5-inch pour at 4,000 psi. That was ideal.
If you are unsure of your slab, the cheap way to check is to drill a small test hole in a corner and measure with a wire. The better way is to have us come out with a rebar scanner and a shallow core kit. We do that survey work as part of our quote process at no extra charge if you are within an hour of Ames. On any older West Des Moines garage where the slab history is unknown, we would rather do the survey than have you assume. Anchor pull-through on a poor slab is the failure mode nobody wants to see, and it is preventable with fifteen minutes of survey time.
Step Three: Plan Your Power Before You Order
Almost every 2 post car lift runs on single-phase 220V power at somewhere between 20 and 30 amps. If your detached garage is fed by a 60-amp or 100-amp subpanel, you need to know what else is on that panel before you add a lift. Compressors, welders, EV chargers, and shop lighting all pull real amperage. On our customer’s build, he had a 100-amp subpanel already feeding a compressor and a MIG welder. Adding the lift required a dedicated 30-amp double-pole breaker and about twenty feet of new wire.
The right sequence is: measure your existing panel capacity, list every simultaneous load, and add up the amps. If the numbers do not fit, you either upsize the subpanel or install a load-management scheme where you cannot run the welder and the lift at the same time. Most hobbyists find the panel upsize is cheaper long term. On this build, our customer added a subpanel expansion during his garage electrical rework, which cost a few hundred dollars and eliminated the concern for good. Plan power first. It is the constraint that most often surprises weekend buyers.
Step Four: Match Capacity to Your Actual Vehicle Set
A hobbyist working on a mid-sixties Chevelle plus occasional family car service does not need a 12,000-lb 2 post car lift. He needs 9,000 or 10,000 pounds. Ten thousand pounds gives you enough headroom to lift a full-size truck if a friend rolls in for a favor, without paying for capacity you will never use. The temptation to buy the biggest lift is real, but it costs money and eats ceiling height for no benefit if your vehicle set is normal.
On the flip side, do not underbuy. A 6,000-lb or 7,000-lb lift is aimed at compact cars only, and the arm reach on those lower-capacity lifts often will not accommodate a modern crossover. Ten thousand pounds is the sweet spot for the vast majority of hobbyists. Symmetric arm geometry is fine for most restoration work; asymmetric is better if you plan to open a door frequently while the vehicle is on the lift. Step Five: Consider Metal Fab Workflow When You Place the Lift
Restoration work and metal fabrication share a garage constantly, and a 2 post car lift changes both workflows. When you place the lift in the bay, think about where your welding cart, your grinder, and your sheet-metal bench will end up relative to the columns. Our customer’s original plan put the lift centered in the bay, which would have blocked his sheet-metal bench access whenever a car was elevated. We shifted the columns two feet toward the door, which opened workbench access without changing anything functional about the lift’s use.
Also think about ventilation. Grinding sparks and welding fumes both travel, and neither belongs on a hydraulic pump or in a cylinder rod area. A ceiling fan and a wall-mount extraction fan positioned to draw air away from the lift’s pump station will extend the life of every component. Step Six: Budget for Install and Accessories, Not Just the Lift
A 2 post car lift purchase is not just the lift. Install labor, freight, arm-pad adapters, oil-drain guides, and a set of stackable pad extensions all add real dollars. Budget in tiers, not exact numbers. The lift itself sits in one tier. Install and freight sit in the next. Pad kits, extensions, and any lighting or air-line upgrades are the third. Step Seven: Plan Ongoing Parts and Service
The last item on the checklist is the one most hobbyists skip: think about parts availability before you buy. A 2 post car lift is a long-life piece of equipment, and the wear parts you will eventually need — arm restraint gears, cable assemblies, hydraulic seals, cam springs — should be available from your seller for the life of the lift.
