An overlanding and off-road builder in Ames called us about a 2 post car lift last summer, but the reason he called was not what most clients lead with. The Overlanding Build That Started It
The build in question was a heavily modified Land Cruiser 80-series with a three-inch suspension lift, upgraded shocks, and a set of oversized tires that pushed the front end into positive camber territory. The owner wanted the alignment corrected before it left the shop, but the builder had been sending it to a dedicated alignment shop and waiting two days for a return trip. Two days across ten builds a year adds up to twenty lost build days annually – real money and real momentum. His question was whether a 2 post car lift with turnplates could do the alignment in-house.
The short version is that a 2-post is not a dedicated alignment rack, but for setting toe and checking camber on a lifted 4×4, it is entirely adequate. The turnplates slide under the front pads, let the wheels swivel freely for toe adjustment, and give a reference for camber measurement against a straight edge or a laser tool. Why Alignment Rack Wasn’t the Right Answer
The first conversation we had with him was about whether to buy a full four-post alignment rack instead of a 2 post car lift. Alignment racks are purpose-built for wheel alignment work and pair with a Hunter or equivalent alignment machine to give a full four-wheel readout. They are also two to three times the cost of a 2-post lift, take up more floor space, and force you into a fixed workflow that is not as flexible for general suspension work. For a shop that does alignment as ten percent of its work and lift-adjacent work as ninety percent, a 2-post with turnplates is the right shape.
We also talked through the option of using a mid-rise scissor lift for alignment, but scissors lift from the frame center rather than the pinch welds, and the wheels are not always in a position that works with turnplates. A 2-post lifts the vehicle by the pinch welds with wheels hanging free, and dropping the front pads onto turnplates for alignment is a natural swap. He agreed. This lets you adjust tie rods and read toe changes without the tires binding against a fixed surface. Turnplates for a 2-post typically run in the low three-figure range per pair and are a one-time purchase.
The workflow is straightforward: lift the vehicle, set the turnplates on the pads, lower until the wheels are on the plates and the suspension is loaded, adjust toe and check camber with a straight edge or a laser, then raise the vehicle to make any tie-rod length changes and repeat. Ten to twenty minutes per alignment for a straightforward toe correction on a lifted 4×4. Not the six-camera Hunter workflow a dealer uses, but adequate for the overlanding build market where dead-nuts precision is not the primary spec.
Parts Pipeline When Something Wears
Every 2 post car lift has wear items that will need replacement over its lifetime. Cables stretch and eventually replace. Arm restraint gears wear. Hydraulic seals leak. Pad rubber compresses and cracks. The question for any commercial-adjacent shop is not whether these things will happen but how fast the parts arrive when they do.
