A service manager at a Des Moines metro dealership called us to spec four new lifts for a service department expansion. He’d been quoted symmetric lifts by the equipment rep from a national chain and wasn’t convinced they were right for a mixed-line dealer running everything from a Corolla to an F-350. This is a technical deep-dive on the exact geometry difference between symmetric and asymmetric arms on a 2 post car lift, the real dimensions that matter for a Des Moines metro dealership doing high volume, and why the answer for a dealer bay is not the same as the answer for a home garage on the same 2 post car lift decision.

Symmetric arms: what the geometry actually gives you

A symmetric 2 post car lift places both columns exactly opposite each other, and both arm sets — front and rear — are the same length. On the SPO12 symmetric the arm reach is 51 inches front and rear, minimum 24 inches, three-stage extension. Vehicle center-of-gravity lands directly between the columns. The upside: even weight distribution on the columns, which matters a great deal for a full-size truck or a work van where the CG is high and the load is heavy. The downside: the columns land in the middle of the vehicle’s length, right where the door opens.

For a dealership doing heavy-duty work — Silverado 3500HDs, Transit 350 vans, Sprinter cargo vans loaded with tools — symmetric is the correct call. The vehicle is long enough that the columns don’t interfere with the driver door, and the even column loading is the right choice for a 6,000 lb front axle on a diesel work truck. For the mixed-fleet dealership bay we started with, symmetric is the wrong call — the columns will land at the B-pillar of a Corolla and the door will not open past 45 degrees, which nobody is going to accept as a daily workflow.

Asymmetric arms: the 30-degree offset explained

An asymmetric 2 post car lift rotates the columns approximately 30 degrees back from the vehicle’s transverse axis, and pairs shorter front arms (typically 27 to 45 inches, three-stage) with longer rear arms (typically 40 to 71 inches, three-stage). The vehicle sits about 30 percent forward of the column line, which puts the driver door aft of the column. Doors open cleanly, techs walk in and out of the vehicle without ducking, and the front pickup point stays accessible from the front of the bay.

The geometry cost is asymmetric loading. Because the vehicle sits forward of column center, roughly 65 percent of the weight lands on the front arms and 35 percent on the rear. A quality asymmetric two-post has front arms rated for the full lift capacity (the 10,000 lb SPOA10 has 10K-rated front arms), not de-rated. Cheap asymmetric lifts sometimes use the same arms as their symmetric siblings and de-rate the whole lift’s real-world capacity, which is why the ALI Gold Label capacity number is worth reading in full — it lists both the rated capacity and the load-per-arm envelope.

Alignment work happens on a 4-post, not a 2-post

Here’s the nuance that surprises new service managers: alignment work in a modern service department actually takes place on a drive-on 4-post scissor-lock alignment rack, not on a 2 post car lift. Turntables and slip plates require the wheels loaded on the runway, and the alignment computer needs the target ride height. What a 2-post contributes to the alignment workflow is the tie-rod, ball-joint, upper strut mount, and control-arm work that happens between the initial reading and the final adjust. That’s a wheels-off, at-working-height job — pure 2-post territory.

For that pre-alignment service work, asymmetric wins in a dealership bay because the tech can spin the steering wheel through full lock while looking at the tie-rod boot, the drag link, and the sector shaft. Symmetric columns block that sight line. If your service department is planning to do heavy alignment volume — a Toyota or Honda dealer will do 10 to 20 alignments a week on this bay — asymmetric is the right 2 post car lift for the pre- and post-alignment repair steps, and the actual alignment reading happens next door on the rack.

Real dimensions: reach, rise, and drive-thru

Numbers that matter for a Des Moines metro dealership spec sheet: minimum arm reach controls how low a car you can lift (a lowered Mustang wants 24-inch minimum front arm reach or shorter). Maximum arm reach controls how tall a truck you can lift (a Sprinter high-roof wants 45-inch minimum front arm reach). Rise height at pinch weld controls what working height you get (target 74 inches for a comfortable standing tech). Drive-thru width — the clearance between columns at floor level — matters for a wide dually or a Transit.

On a Rotary SPO12 symmetric you get 51-inch max front reach, 74.5-inch rise, and 106-inch drive-thru. On a Rotary SPOA12 asymmetric you get 27 to 45-inch front reach, 45 to 71-inch rear reach, 74-inch rise, and 100-inch drive-thru. Six inches of drive-thru sounds small; it matters when a wide-body Silverado 3500 mirrors come through. For the Des Moines dealer we started with, we specced asymmetric on three bays for the passenger-car and light-truck mix, and one symmetric bay reserved for HD trucks — matching each 2 post car lift to its actual daily workload.

Column spacing and modern vehicle widths

The single dimension that trips up dealership spec sheets more than any other is column-to-column distance. Modern SUVs and full-size trucks are wider than they were fifteen years ago — a Chevy Tahoe grew 2.5 inches between the 2007 and 2021 model years, mirror-out width is now 87 to 89 inches on full-size trucks with power-fold mirrors extended. A 100-inch drive-thru clears most passenger vehicles with mirrors folded but is tight on a work-truck mirror-open. The 106-inch symmetric drive-thru is genuinely useful when a tech drives in without folding mirrors.

For a dealer bay doing high volume, tech time saved on mirror-fold-in is small per vehicle but real per week. If your service writers are moving vehicles in and out of a bay 30 times a day, 30 seconds of mirror fold-and-unfold is 15 minutes of writer time, five hours a month, sixty hours a year. On four bays that becomes an FTE month. Symmetric columns save that time on truck-heavy bays, and asymmetric saves the corresponding time on door-open-frequency bays for the passenger-car techs. Different bays deserve different 2 post car lift choices.

Making the choice in a Des Moines dealership

The service manager’s original national-chain quote had four symmetric SPO12 lifts. What we quoted instead was three SPOA12 asymmetric plus one SPO15 symmetric on the HD bay. The equipment cost was $600 higher in total, install cost was the same, and the day-to-day workflow win — passenger-car techs on asymmetric, HD techs on symmetric — put every service order on the right lift geometry for the vehicle. He signed the same afternoon.

The point isn’t that asymmetric is universally better; the point is that a dealership has enough volume to justify mixing lift geometries across bays, whereas an independent shop with two bays usually picks one geometry that covers 80 percent of its mix. The Des Moines dealer had eight bays; four getting a new 2 post car lift; three geometries were the right answer. Ask your equipment rep to walk you through the arm-reach envelope for each geometry with your actual vehicle mix on the table, and don’t let a single-model quote get past you without that conversation.
