An east-central Iowa EV specialty shop owner called our team in June with a project that mixed two things nobody was writing about honestly: a 2 post car lift installation into a building that also had to double as seasonal vehicle storage for six long-hood restorations from a nearby collector. He had already been through two consultants, three quotes, and one YouTube rabbit hole. He wanted the myths cleared out. So we drove over, walked the building with a laser distance meter, and pulled apart the assumptions he had been sold. What follows is the same myth-by-myth breakdown we gave him that morning, because too many shops start on bad information and pay for it in year two.

Myth One: A Concrete Slab That Feels Solid Is Solid Enough

The single most common myth we correct on a 2 post car lift install is that a slab which does not crack under a heavy truck must be safe for lift anchors. It is not the same load path. A parked truck spreads weight across four tires. A two-post concentrates the entire load of the lift plus the vehicle plus dynamic movement onto two column footprints, each pulling upward on anchors when the vehicle is raised. That upward pull is what fails weak concrete, not the downward crush. We routinely core-drill slabs that felt bulletproof and find 3 inches or less of concrete over old fill.

For the east-central Iowa EV shop, we drilled three cores in the proposed lift bay and got readings of 3.75, 3.5, and 4.25 inches. That range is a red flag. The manufacturer minimum for the 10,000 lb 2 post car lift he wanted was 4.25 inches at 3,000 psi. His only options were pouring anchor pads under each column footprint or dropping to a lower-capacity model that his slab could actually handle safely. Neither answer is glamorous. Both answers are cheaper than an anchor failure in year three, which is where the myth actually ends.

Myth Two: Ceiling Height Only Matters for the Machine

People measure the ceiling and figure that whatever number is left over after the lift height goes on top of a vehicle is workspace. That is not the whole story. Ceiling height also drives where the crossbeam or overhead safety bar sits when a small vehicle is at full lift. On the EV shop, the collector was storing tall long-hood restorations under the lift arms during off-season. That combination meant the arms had to swing clear of stored roofs when the lift was empty, and the overhead bar could not interfere with the tallest bay door opening.

We ended up specifying a low-ceiling short-column 2 post car lift with a modified overhead height that gave the shop the working clearance for lifted EV service without dropping the top-of-door line for the collector’s storage rotation. That level of coordination is what a real site survey delivers. Buying a lift out of a catalog and hoping the numbers work is how shops end up cutting overhead bars in the parking lot to make the machine fit. Ceiling height in a mixed-use building is a system problem, not a machine problem, and the fix starts with a tape measure in the actual bay.

Myth Three: Any Electrician Can Handle the Power Drop

A 10,000 lb 2 post car lift power unit typically runs on single-phase 220V pulling around 20 to 30 amps at peak load, or three-phase where available. The myth is that this is a routine drop any electrician can do in an hour. In practice, the disconnect placement, conduit routing to avoid the arm swing, and the placement of the wall control box relative to the operator sightline are all details a general electrician will miss unless someone hands them a real spec sheet. We have walked into shops where the disconnect was installed on the wrong wall, forcing the operator to walk around the lift every time to shut down.

For the EV specialty shop, we spec’d a dedicated 30-amp single-phase circuit with the disconnect within reach of the operator control station and a short conduit run that stayed clear of the column footprint. Grounding requirements for shops with high-voltage EV battery work are also stricter than for a general repair bay, and the local inspector we deal with in east-central Iowa knows what he wants to see. A 2 post car lift install that ignores the electrical layout is a lift that will annoy the operator every single shift for the next twenty years. Get that right on paper before the concrete gets touched.

Myth Four: Overhead vs Baseplate Is Just Preference

Guys will tell you overhead versus baseplate is a matter of preference. It is not. It is a decision driven by ceiling height, floor obstruction tolerance, and the shape of vehicles you plan to run. An overhead 2 post car lift puts the safety bar over the top of the vehicle, which is fine for cars and standard SUVs but forces you to think about tall vehicle roofs. A baseplate configuration puts the crossbeam at floor level, which lets you fit shorter ceilings but creates a trip hazard and a floor obstruction that a busy tech will trip over every day.

For the EV shop, the answer was actually a symmetric overhead unit with a tall column configuration because the ceiling supported it and he did not want a crossbar between the columns to catch a rolling floor jack. We have installed baseplate lifts where they were the right answer and we have installed overhead lifts where they were the right answer. The wrong answer is picking one because a forum post said it was better. Every building is different, and the honest recommendation only comes out of an actual site walk with someone who has installed both configurations more than a hundred times.

Myth Five: Delivery Freight Is a Minor Line Item

A 2 post car lift ships on a pallet weighing roughly 1,600 to 2,000 pounds. Freight to a business address with a loading dock is one number. Freight to a residential-style shop with no dock and no forklift is a bigger number. Freight to a shop that needs a liftgate driver call and a Saturday delivery window is a bigger number still. Guys quote a lift over the phone and forget to ask about the freight side of the delivery, and then the final invoice looks 15 percent higher than the estimate they had in their head.

The EV specialty shop had a forklift on site, which cut a couple hundred dollars off freight compared to a liftgate delivery. That kind of detail is why we build the site survey and freight logistics into one quote. Myth Six: The Lift Manual Is Enough for a Clean Install

Manufacturers write install manuals for a factory-perfect building. Your building is not that. Every real install we do requires the tech to make judgment calls about column shimming for slab slope, anchor bolt torque adjustments for actual concrete strength, cable routing around unexpected duct work, and hydraulic hose length adjustments for shop layout quirks. A shop owner who reads the manual and hires day labor is going to get a technically installed 2 post car lift that plumb-checks fine and then rides rough for years because the columns were never truly leveled.

Our install crews carry laser levels, torque wrenches calibrated within the month, and enough shim stock to compensate for a slope up to three-quarters of an inch across the bay. The EV shop bay had a slope of about half an inch column to column, which is inside spec for shim compensation. Without shims, that slope becomes uneven cable tension and premature wear on one side. Read the manual. Then hire someone who has installed the same model twenty times and knows what the manual does not say. That is the practical difference between an install that lasts and an install that fights you.

Myth Seven: Warranty Coverage Is All the Support You Need

Warranty language on a 2 post car lift covers structural failure. It does not cover the day the arm restraint gear starts clicking, the day a cable frays before scheduled replacement, or the day the power unit needs a rebuild kit and the shop is trying to run cars through it that afternoon. Real support is a supplier who answers the phone in Iowa hours, ships parts overnight from a warehouse you can drive to, and knows the failure modes of the specific model on your floor. That is not a warranty. That is a relationship.
