A rural farm shop east of Marion, Iowa called us last fall about a 2 post car lift they wanted in the shop before winter storage season kicked in. They needed a spot to park a mix of pickups, an older Suburban, and a summer-only project car for six months without wheels on the ground. Simple on paper. But before we quoted anything, we walked them through a pre-purchase checklist we have built up from years of installing in outbuildings across central Iowa – because the difference between a smooth install and a two-week delay usually comes down to whether the shop knew what to check before the freight truck showed up in the driveway.

Start With the Concrete

The single most overlooked item on any 2 post car lift pre-purchase checklist is the concrete slab. Every manufacturer publishes a minimum slab thickness – typically four inches of 3,000 psi concrete for a 10,000 lb machine, and often six inches for anything heavier. Farm shops built in the 1970s and 1980s frequently have a three-and-a-half inch slab with no rebar, and that is not going to hold anchor bolts under a loaded vehicle. Before you spend anything on a lift, drill a small core sample or check the original build documents. Our Marion client had a receipt from the shop’s construction showing four-inch slab, which was the green light we needed.

Age matters too. Concrete continues curing for years, but anything under 28 days old will not hold anchor bolts to spec. If your slab is new because you just poured for the shop, you need to wait. We have had shops try to accelerate this and end up pulling anchors within the first month of use. The safer move is to time the lift order so freight arrives right as the concrete crosses the 30-day mark. Cracked slabs are a separate conversation – small hairlines are usually fine, anything wider than a pencil gets an engineer’s eye before we bolt anything down through it.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Doors

The second item on our 2 post car lift checklist is ceiling height, measured at the exact spot the lift will stand. Not the peak of the roof; not the average across the bay – the actual clearance above where the columns will bolt down. A 10,000 lb clear-floor overhead machine typically needs about 11 feet of ceiling to run the top beam and cable tray. Baseplate machines let you go lower – some shops with just under 10 feet of ceiling can still fit a baseplate model. Our Marion client had 11 feet 6 inches, which was comfortable for either configuration.

Overhead doors add another wrinkle. The door track and springs eat into the ceiling on the wall where the door lives, and if your lift columns need to sit near that wall, you can lose two feet of usable height in a hurry. We measured the vertical clearance from finished floor to the underside of the door track along the wall the lift would face. On this build, the door track shaved the corner of one column’s clearance but not the top beam, so we stayed with overhead. Always measure with the door open; that is the position that matters when you are running vehicles in and out.

Electrical Service and Phase

Farm shops are notorious for surprise electrical setups. The main panel in our Marion client’s shop was a 100 amp single-phase service running lights, a small welder, and an air compressor. A typical 2 post car lift motor draws around 15 to 20 amps at 220 volts single-phase, which the panel could handle – but only if the welder and compressor were not both running at the same moment. We walked through his usage patterns and confirmed he almost never ran welder and lift concurrently. That kept us out of the panel-upgrade conversation.

If the shop only has 110-volt service, you are in a different discussion. Some smaller residential lifts run 110, but most 10K commercial machines want 220. Three-phase is a bonus in a commercial shop and a rarity in a farm outbuilding. Before you order, take a picture of the inside of your breaker panel and send it to us. We will tell you within a day whether the lift you are looking at will run cleanly off what you have or whether you need to budget an electrician. Nothing kills momentum like ordering a lift and then discovering your service cannot start the motor.

Door Swing and Vehicle Path

Once the machine is bolted down, you still have to get vehicles in and out. Measure your overhead door width and compare it to the outside-column-to-outside-column dimension of the lift. On most 10,000 lb 2 post car lift models that is roughly 11 to 12 feet between columns. If your overhead door is 10 feet wide, you have a problem – the vehicle path is narrower than the loading zone of the lift, and you will constantly be squeezing sideways to line up on the pads. Our Marion client had a 12-foot door, which gave him plenty of side-to-side room.

Also check the approach angle. If the driveway rises sharply into the door, or if there is a lip at the threshold, low-clearance cars can scrape or high-loaded pickups can bottom their tailgates. We eyeballed his approach from the gravel drive up to the concrete apron and everything was flat. In hilly-driveway builds we sometimes recommend leveling the last ten feet of approach before install, because it changes what you can drive onto the pads. A lift is only useful for the vehicles you can actually get in front of it.

Unloading and Rigging

A 2 post car lift arrives on a common carrier freight truck as a crated pallet weighing roughly 1,500 to 2,000 lbs depending on configuration. You do not get it off the truck with a couple of buddies and a floor jack. The two normal options are a liftgate delivery, where the driver lowers the pallet to the ground with a hydraulic gate, or a forklift unload if you have one on site. Our Marion client had a farm forklift that could handle 3,000 lbs at reach, which made unloading a ten-minute job.

Liftgate deliveries add cost and require the driveway to be firm and level enough for the truck. Gravel drives with soft shoulders after a rain can turn into a call from the freight driver telling you he refused to leave the road. If you do not have a forklift, we sometimes coordinate with a nearby shop that does, or with a local rental yard. Plan the unload before the shipment leaves Iowa. Once the truck is at your gate, you have a short window to get it off before demurrage charges start showing up on the invoice.

Anchor Layout and Column Placement

Every 2 post car lift ships with a template for anchor bolt placement. Before you drill, you commit the machine to a specific spot in the bay for its lifetime. We spent about an hour with our Marion client putting painter’s tape on the floor in the shape of the columns, then rolling different vehicles in and out to see if the pad locations lined up with lift points. On the third try we adjusted the tape two feet closer to the north wall, which gave the driver’s door of his Suburban room to open past 80 degrees against nothing.

Anchor bolts are typically wedge-type, three-quarter or five-eighths inch diameter, and drilled to a specified depth in the slab. The install crew brings a rotary hammer drill sized for the job. Once holes are punched, the anchors set with a torque wrench to spec. Do not skip the torque check – we have seen shops finger-tighten and then wonder why the columns wobble under load two months later. On a fresh install the anchor torque test is part of the sign-off, and we recommend re-torquing after the first 30 days of use as a matter of habit.

Timeline From Order to First Lift

From the day our Marion client signed the quote to the day his first vehicle went up on the pads was about three weeks. Freight from our Iowa warehouse to central Iowa takes three to five days on a common carrier. Install scheduling is usually a week out from receipt, and the install itself is a day, sometimes a day and a half if the anchor layout needs conversation. Add a day for the electrician to run the 220 line if that was not already there. Three weeks is normal; four weeks is not unusual in busy months.

He had winter storage vehicles rolling in by mid-November, exactly when he needed the 2 post car lift ready. A pre-purchase checklist is worth every minute you spend on it before the order goes in, because every item on it that gets caught early is a delay avoided later.
