What ALI Gold Certification Actually Means

Gold certification means every unit that leaves the factory has been tested to that standard and carries a gold label on the column. Not every lift on the market carries the label; some manufacturers self-certify or skip certification entirely for their lower-end lines.

For a municipal fleet, ALI Gold is effectively a purchasing requirement. Your insurance carrier will ask, your city risk manager will ask, and if you have OSHA-covered technicians working on the lift, the label matters at inspection time. Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak all carry ALI Gold on their commercial lines. Some entry-level home-garage models don’t carry it at all, so verify the specific model number against the ALI database before you spec anything for a fleet purchase order.

Certification vs Marketing Claims

A lift that says meets ANSI standards is not the same as a lift that says ALI Gold certified. The first is a manufacturer self-claim; the second is a third-party verification with a searchable database at autolift.org. Any 2 post car lift you buy for a municipal fleet should show up in that database, and if it does not, keep shopping. We check the certification for every lift we quote to a fleet manager before we send the number over on paperwork.

Certification is not a one-time event either. ALI does periodic re-audits, and if a manufacturer changes the design of a certified lift, the new version has to be re-certified before it can carry the Gold label. Ask your vendor for the specific model and serial-range that carries the Gold label, not just a general claim that the brand carries it across the product line. That level of detail is what protects you when an inspector actually shows up.

CV Axle and Half-Shaft Service on a 2 Post

CV axle replacement is one of the most common repair jobs on a municipal fleet: squad cars, pickup trucks, and vans all wear through CV boots and joints on Iowa gravel roads faster than a national fleet average. The job requires the vehicle up at working height, the wheel off, and enough clearance under the fender to swing the axle out of the differential housing and slide it clear of the knuckle to remove the failed shaft assembly cleanly.

A 2 post car lift is the right tool for CV axle work, better than a 4-post because the wheels are free-hanging, and better than a scissor because the tech has full walk-around access to the wheel well. What you want in the lift: 10K capacity minimum for police interceptors and half-tons, 12K if you have any 3/4-ton service trucks in the fleet, and asymmetric arms so the doors clear the columns when the tech gets in and out to move the vehicle around on the pads.

Bay Sizing for Municipal Fleets

Northwest Iowa municipal fleet garages are usually pole barns or converted DOT buildings: ceilings run 12 to 16 feet, and floors are typically 6-inch reinforced concrete because they were poured to hold snowplows and dump trucks. That makes them ideal for a 2 post car lift install. We rarely have to quote slab work or concrete verification on municipal jobs because the pour is usually thicker than the lift needs by a comfortable margin.

Bay width is more often the limiting factor than ceiling height on municipal jobs. Between columns, a 2 post car lift needs a drive-through of about 9 to 10 feet to fit a full-size pickup with mirrors extended. Total bay width including walk-around should be at least 20 feet. If your fleet garage has 18-foot bays because it was originally sized for cars, we sometimes recommend an asymmetric configuration that pushes the vehicle back and gives extra front-of-column workspace.

Safety-Cam Testing Protocol

ALI Gold certification requires safety-cam engagement testing on every service visit, and OSHA best practice is a daily test before the first vehicle goes up. The test is straightforward: raise the lift 6 inches, listen for both cam pawls clicking into engagement, then relieve hydraulic pressure and confirm the carriage holds without sinking. If either cam does not engage, the lift comes out of service until a technician is called to inspect and correct the issue.

We recommend municipal fleets keep a laminated safety-cam test card on each 2 post car lift column, with a signature line for each daily test. That documentation matters at OSHA audit time and at insurance renewal time. Cam pawls and cam springs wear out around year seven of heavy use, and we stock them for Rotary and Challenger lifts. Cam replacement is a two-hour job per column with a technician who knows the process from prior service calls.

Arm Restraint Inspection

Arm restraints on any commercial 2 post car lift are gear-lock mechanisms that engage automatically when the arm rotates under load. They are the reason arms do not swing out from under a vehicle mid-service. On a municipal fleet lift running CV axle and half-shaft jobs, the arm restraints see load-shift stress every time the tech pushes on the axle to seat the CV joint into the differential and against the retaining clip on the inboard side.

Inspection is visual and audible: engage each arm under an empty raise, listen for the click of the gear-lock, then push laterally on the arm to confirm it does not rotate under a hand-push load. Any slippage means the gear-lock mechanism is worn and the arm restraint needs replacement, a low three-figure parts call plus about an hour of labor per arm.
