A car restoration shop in southeast Iowa asked us for a decision tree on choosing a 2 post car lift for their operation, from initial budget through final model pick. They do full restorations plus seasonal storage of finished cars for collector customers, which means the lift sees both long-duration heavy work and quick in-and-out cycles as cars move to and from the storage bay. Decision one: what is your honest budget

Every 2 post car lift decision tree starts with budget honesty. Set a real number that includes lift, freight, install, tax, and roughly 500 dollars in accessories. If that number is under about the entry-commercial band, you are looking at residential-grade lifts from BendPak or Atlas — capable for personal garages, but not the right pick for a commercial restoration shop that will cycle the lift daily. If your budget lands in the mid-commercial range, you are in the sweet spot for a Rotary SPO10 or Challenger CL10, which is the honest starting spec for a commercial restoration shop.

Above the mid-commercial range, you are into 12,000-pound lifts and heavier configurations. For a restoration shop that will occasionally see heavier project vehicles — a small truck or a body-on-frame classic with a full drivetrain — the 12,000-pound tier is worth considering. Above that, into 14,000-pound heavy-duty commercial, is generally more capacity than a restoration shop needs unless the shop specializes in trucks. The southeast Iowa shop set their budget in the mid-commercial band and stayed there, which is where most restoration operators land after doing the math.

Decision two: what capacity does your work actually require

The second decision node is capacity. Take the heaviest vehicle you expect to see, add a 25 percent safety margin, and pick a lift rated at or above that number. A restoration shop that mostly works on classic muscle cars, older domestic sedans, and hot-rod builds sees vehicles typically in the 3,500 to 4,500-pound range. A 10,000-pound commercial 2 post car lift covers that portfolio with substantial headroom and leaves room for the occasional larger project vehicle that walks through the door.

If the shop occasionally stores or works on early-70s heavy-duty pickups — an F-250 or a C-30 dually — capacity climbs to the 6,500 to 7,500-pound range for those specific vehicles. A 10,000-pound lift still covers those with margin. It is when the shop starts talking about heavy trucks, motorhomes, or dual-cab dually pickups from the modern era that a 12,000 or 14,000-pound lift becomes the honest spec. The southeast Iowa shop’s honest heaviest vehicle was a 1972 heavy-half pickup at about 5,800 pounds, so a 10,000-pound rated 2 post car lift landed at 58 percent of capacity — a comfortable duty ratio.

Decision three: symmetric, asymmetric, or versymmetric arms

The third decision is arm geometry. For a restoration shop with a mixed portfolio — some passenger cars, some pickups, some full-size classic sedans — versymmetric is almost always the right call. It handles both configurations on the same lift, letting the tech pick per vehicle. The small price premium over straight symmetric is easy to justify on a lift that will be in use for two decades.

Straight symmetric works if the shop only sees pickups and full-size classics. Straight asymmetric works if the shop only sees passenger cars and needs maximum door clearance. Almost no restoration shop stays in one lane year over year, so versymmetric is the safer long-term bet. The southeast Iowa shop went versymmetric on our recommendation, and within the first month they had already used the asymmetric position on three passenger cars and the symmetric position on a couple of full-size classics. Both configurations proved themselves the same week, which is why versymmetric is the default recommendation for anything except single-vehicle-type shops.

Decision four: overhead or baseplate for your 2 post car lift

The fourth decision is column style. Overhead 2 post car lift models have a crossbeam between the tops of the two columns that carries the equalizer cables. Baseplate lifts route the cables through a floor channel. Overhead requires 12 feet or more of ceiling clearance in the lift footprint. Baseplate installs under lower ceilings, down to about 10 and a half feet, but includes a low hump at the floor between the columns.

For a restoration shop in a converted warehouse, machine shop, or purpose-built garage, ceiling clearance is usually not the limiting factor. Most southeast Iowa shop buildings run 12 to 14 feet clear, so overhead is the default. If the building is a converted retail space or a converted low-clearance industrial building, baseplate becomes the right pick. Decision five: brand and model shortlist

The fifth decision is brand and specific model. Our commercial recommendation shortlist for a restoration shop lands on three finalists: Rotary SPO10, Challenger CL10, and BendPak XPR-10AS. All three are ALI Gold certified, all three carry solid warranty, and all three have long parts availability. Rotary is the workhorse in commercial shops nationally and has the deepest parts network. Challenger is close on quality with slightly different arm geometry options. BendPak sits between commercial and residential and offers a slightly different price point.

For a restoration shop specifically, we lean toward Rotary or Challenger for the commercial-grade construction and the ALI paperwork trail, which matters for insurance and for future resale of the shop. The southeast Iowa restoration shop chose a Rotary SPO10 versymmetric overhead because their insurance carrier specifically listed Rotary and Challenger in their approved-equipment schedule. That kind of insurance detail sometimes drives the final brand pick more than the tech spec, and it is worth asking your carrier before you order any 2 post car lift.

Decision six: accessories, adapters, and pad kits

The sixth decision is accessories. Every 2 post car lift benefits from a pad extension stack — a three-inch and a six-inch stack per arm — that gives you the reach for tall unibody frames and long-wheelbase pickups. For a restoration shop, we also recommend a polyurethane cup set for classics with painted rocker panels or delicate pinch welds, plus a set of frame-slider adapters for cars where the pad has to reach past a sill onto an inboard frame rail.

Beyond pads, restoration shops often add a rolling shop cart to catch tools and small parts during long jobs, a set of secondary safety stands for extended-duration work, and a shop drop light or LED underhood light setup. Budget 500 to 800 dollars in accessories on top of the base lift for a well-equipped restoration bay. The southeast Iowa shop spent about 650 dollars on the initial accessory kit and added a second polyurethane cup set two months later when they picked up a customer with a 1970 Chevelle in perfect original paint. That extra 100 dollars saved a paint touch-up cost that would have run into thousands.

Decision seven: seasonal storage workflow and final pick

The seventh and final decision node is workflow. A restoration shop with seasonal storage moves cars in and out of the lift multiple times per year for winter storage, spring pull-outs, and mid-season service on customer collections. That means the lift is being used both for long-duration restoration work and for quick 20-minute inspections when a car goes to or from storage.
