A third-generation family garage in southwest Iowa called us about a 2 post car lift for seasonal storage — their grandfather had run the business, their father had modernized it, and now they were looking at storing a rotating fleet of restoration projects and winter-stored classics on lifts to free up floor space. That use case is different from a service shop, and the technical spec that fits it is different too. Here’s the deep-dive we ran with them on real dimensions, real capacities, real overhead heights, and the exact model specs that ended up making sense for a family garage doing storage rather than production wrenching.

Column Height and Overall Height — They’re Not the Same
Every 2 post car lift spec sheet lists a column height and an overall height. The column height is the top of the vertical structure. The overall height, on an overhead machine, is the top of the crossbar that connects the two columns. On a clearfloor machine there’s no crossbar overhead, so column height and overall height are basically the same.
For the southwest Iowa family garage this distinction was load-bearing, because their older section of the building — the original 1950s post-and-beam construction — had varying ceiling clearance across the bays. Some bays cleared thirteen feet, others cleared eleven-eight. An overhead machine at twelve-two column plus the crossbar wouldn’t fit their tight bays. A clearfloor machine at the same column height would. We measured every bay before we speced the lift, and the storage plan ended up putting the lift in one of the taller bays and using the shorter bays for parts and rolling toolboxes.
Rise, Lift Height, and Pad Height at Full Extension
The rise on a 2 post car lift is how far the carriages travel from lowest to highest. Full lift height is where the pad sits at max travel. Pad height at low position is where the pad sits with the arm at rest on its lowest stop. For seasonal storage, the useful number is the full lift height minus the vehicle’s overall height, because that’s the clearance above the roof when the car is aloft — and if that clearance is less than the height of a human head, you can’t walk under.
Most 10,000 lb clearfloor lifts have a full lift height around 72 to 76 inches at the pad. Add the vehicle’s ground clearance, which is 4 to 8 inches for a stored classic, and the total under-vehicle standing height is around 68 to 70 inches. That’s enough for average-height humans to walk under comfortably. Taller people should look at the 12,000 lb models with 78-plus-inch lift heights. The southwest Iowa family had a range of relatives working in the shop, and the 12K spec was the right answer for the tallest of them.
Width Between Columns and Arm Reach Range
The horizontal dimensions on a 2 post car lift determine what fits between the columns and how the pads reach the vehicle. Width between columns on most 10,000 to 12,000 lb machines runs about 108 to 132 inches inside-to-inside. Overall footprint including columns is another twelve to eighteen inches wider. That matters for the bay wall clearance — the columns need to be far enough from the wall that you can access the anchor bolts and the electrical disconnect.
Arm reach is the minimum-to-maximum distance from the column base to where the pad can sit. Front arms usually telescope from about 24 inches to 42 inches, and rear arms from about 28 inches to 60 inches on a symmetric machine. That range determines what wheelbases fit — a compact car needs the arms shortened significantly, a full-size truck needs them extended almost all the way. If you’re storing everything from a Corvair to a Silverado, you want maximum arm-reach range, which usually means a three-stage telescoping arm rather than a two-stage.
Weight Distribution and Front-to-Rear Load Balance
Every 2 post car lift has a rated capacity, but the rating assumes the vehicle’s weight is distributed within a range on the arms. Most manufacturers spec a maximum front-arm load and a maximum rear-arm load, and those numbers combined equal the total rated capacity — but they’re not equal. A 10,000 lb-rated lift often permits 5,600 lb per pair of arms on one end and 4,400 lb on the other end, because vehicles are almost never 50-50 weight distribution.
For the storage use case this matters when you’re storing pickups that carry the engine and transmission mass over the front axle. A four-wheel-drive Silverado has around 60 percent of its curb weight on the front axle, which means the front arms of the lift see roughly 3,600 to 3,800 lb on an 8,000 lb curb-weight truck. That’s inside spec on the 10,000 lb machine but not by a huge margin. If the storage plan includes ever putting a body-on-frame truck on the lift, the 12,000 lb spec buys margin. Column Base Plate and Anchor Pattern
The column base plate is the flat steel plate at the bottom of each column that transmits the vertical load to the concrete through anchor bolts. Most 2 post car lift base plates run about 10 to 14 inches square, with four anchor holes at the corners. Anchor diameter is typically 3/4-inch, and embedment depth is typically 3-1/4 to 4 inches into 4-inch minimum 3,000-psi concrete.
For a lift that’s going to sit in a family garage for decades, the anchor detail is more important than most owners realize. We spec wedge-style expansion anchors from a name-brand structural supplier, not the generic hardware-store versions, because the pull-out spec on the certified anchors is documented and the generics vary. Anchor pullout under cyclic loading is a slow failure mode — you don’t notice it until someone bumps the column and the whole base wiggles. Prevent that on install day with the right anchors and a torque wrench, and it’s done for the life of the machine.
Model Number Comparison — What the Family Ended Up With
We compared four specific model numbers for the family garage: a 10,000 lb symmetric clearfloor, a 12,000 lb symmetric clearfloor, a 12,000 lb symmetric overhead, and a 15,000 lb asymmetric overhead. On the storage-first workflow, arm reach and lift height mattered more than daily-use ergonomics, and the ceiling constraint knocked out the overhead options in the tighter bays.
The 12,000 lb symmetric clearfloor 2 post car lift won on paper and won again on the walkthrough. Column height at 12 feet even fit the shop’s clear ceiling comfortably, full lift height at 76 inches gave enough head-clearance under stored vehicles for the tallest family member, arm range covered everything from a mid-sixties Mustang to a full-size C10 pickup, and the safety pawl design was dual-side on both columns. Total delivered and installed came in inside their budget with room for the pad adapter set.
What a Family Garage Should Actually Ask Before Buying
