An RV and trailer service shop in western Illinois bought a 2 post car lift from us last spring, and we have stayed in touch through their first year of ownership. They service travel trailers, small camper vans, and the occasional pickup that hauls those trailers, and their bay was set up for wheel-off trailer work with no way to raise a tow vehicle above chest height. This is their first-year story — how we picked the model, what install day looked like, the layout tradeoffs they made in a shop originally built for a hoist and floor jacks, and what a full twelve months of daily use taught them about workflow.

Why a Trailer Shop Needed a 2 Post Car Lift at All

The shop’s original setup was a heavy-duty jack stand array and a rolling floor jack — enough for wheel bearing work on a horse trailer or camper trailer, but useless for tow-vehicle service. The owner had been sending three-quarter-ton and one-ton tow-vehicle customers down the road for oil changes and brake work, and losing meaningful ancillary service revenue to a neighboring shop every month. He decided the fix was a 2 post car lift dedicated to tow vehicles, sized for full-size trucks, and installed alongside his existing trailer service floor space.

We visited the shop twice before quoting. The first visit was to measure the building — a mixed-purpose 40-by-60 pole barn with two overhead doors and a section of the floor that had been poured at a different time than the rest. The second visit was to test the concrete on the newer pad, which turned out to be a solid five inches of 4,000 PSI concrete. The older pad was thin and cracked, so we ruled it out. The final install location put the lift twelve feet inside the west door, giving the owner enough drive-in room to swing a long-bed dually through without repositioning. That single decision made the whole first year of workflow feel obvious in retrospect.

Sizing the Lift for a Mixed Trailer and Tow-Vehicle Fleet

We spec’d a 15,000-pound overhead 2 post car lift with wide column spacing and three-stage arms. The 15K was overkill for most of the tow vehicles rolling through — a typical loaded three-quarter-ton sits at 7,800 to 8,500 pounds — but the shop owner was firm about future-proofing for one-ton duallies with fifth-wheel gooseneck setups still bolted in. Those tow vehicles regularly exceed 10,000 pounds when they come in with the hitch, chains, and tool box already installed. The extra spend for the 15K over a 10K bought him ten years of not worrying about capacity.

We also included the extra-wide column spacing option, which adds about six inches of drive-through clearance. That was critical for dually service. Standard column spacing on a 10K lift is about 108 inches drive-through; the extra-wide 15K comes in around 114 to 116 inches. On a one-ton dually with mirrors folded, that six inches is the difference between a comfortable drive-in and a nervous one. We do not up-sell capacity for its own sake, but on this build the case was clear. The owner has since told us the wide spacing has been the single most-used option — every dually customer he serves compliments the bay layout when they roll in.

Install Day: What Actually Happens When Our Crew Arrives

Install day for a 2 post car lift is one full working day. Our crew arrived at 7 a.m. with the columns already unloaded off the freight truck the previous afternoon. The first hour is layout — measuring twice from the anchor lines, chalk-marking the anchor holes, and confirming the column footprint is square within a quarter inch. Then we drill. Anchor holes for a 15K are five-eighths inch diameter and about six inches deep. On the western Illinois shop’s five-inch pad, we chose a slightly shorter anchor and epoxy-set the four base anchors on each column for extra hold.

By 11 a.m. the columns were standing and the overhead crossbeam was hoisted. Cable equalizer routing takes about an hour of careful threading and pre-tensioning. The electrical hookup — 220-volt single-phase in this case — is a licensed electrician’s job, and the shop had one on-site waiting. By 2 p.m. we were running an unloaded lift cycle and adjusting the cable tension. By 4 p.m. the safety locks were engaging cleanly at every step, we had run a loaded cycle with a technician’s pickup, and we handed over the operator manual. Our crew left by 5 p.m. The owner opened the shop the next morning and had his first tow-vehicle oil change done by 9 a.m.

Layout: The Old Bay, the New Lift, and the Compromise

The trickiest part of the whole project was the layout. The shop’s original bay had a workbench along the north wall, a floor jack and stand storage on the west wall, and a rolling toolbox that moved wherever the trailer of the day sat. A 2 post car lift needs about 25 feet of clear floor length — 15 feet for the lift and vehicle, plus 5 feet of walk-around on each end. The bay was 40 feet deep, but the workbench ate 4 feet, and the door swing ate another 3.

We ended up rebuilding the workbench along a diagonal to open up the lift zone, and we moved the trailer jack storage to a shelf on the south wall. The owner initially resisted the diagonal workbench — it looked odd on paper. Once the lift was standing, the diagonal made sense: the workbench pointed at the front of the lifted vehicle, so a tech doing brake work could reach for a hammer without walking around a column. That single layout compromise turned the bay from a cramped conflict into a smooth loop. Every install has one of these decisions, and we push hard for the answer that plays out best after a year of daily use, not the answer that looks tidiest on install day.

First Ninety Days: Small Adjustments and Surprises

The first ninety days after install are when a shop learns its new lift. In this case there were two small surprises. First, the cable tension needed a re-check at about the 60-cycle mark. This is normal — cables stretch a bit under the first hundred cycles of load, and every reputable brand recommends a first-month re-tension. We drove out on a slow Wednesday and adjusted in about fifteen minutes. The second surprise was that the shop’s air compressor drain line ran under what turned out to be the natural path for a tech walking around the passenger side. We rerouted the drain in an afternoon.

Beyond that, the lift ran perfectly for the first three months. Every unit we install gets a follow-up call at 30 days, a visit at 90 days if the customer is in-region, and a service reminder at 12 months. We caught the cable re-tension on the 30-day call; the shop owner had noticed a tiny click when the lift descended past halfway and mentioned it in passing. That is the kind of thing a new lift owner might dismiss as normal noise. It was not — it was cable slack starting to show, and we fixed it before it affected safety. Workflow Gains We Did Not Expect

The obvious win with a 2 post car lift is that a technician can stand upright under a truck instead of laying on a creeper. The less obvious wins are the ones the owner told us about at six months. He had picked up an extra 90 minutes of billable time per day on tow-vehicle work because the tech could complete an oil change and rotation in one lift cycle instead of jacking, jacking again, and re-checking. He had cut his tire disposal-and-swap time on dually setups significantly. And he had stopped losing his best techs to a nicer-equipped shop up the road, because his shop was now the nicer-equipped shop.

The other gain was mental. He told us that walking into the bay in the morning and seeing a proper lift standing there changed how he priced his work. He raised his labor rate by $15 an hour six months after install and lost zero customers. His argument was that a shop with proper equipment is worth more than a shop with jack stands, and his customers agreed. This is a story we hear over and over from newly lifted shops. The equipment upgrade shifts the customer perception of the shop itself. That is the real, unquantifiable return on a first lift, and it shows up in ticket size as much as in ticket time.

Twelve Months Later: What We Would Change

Looking back after twelve months, there are two things we would do differently on this install. First, we would have quoted air and electric utility columns from the start. The shop ended up retrofitting a hose reel and an outlet on one of the columns nine months in, and doing that after install cost more than it would have as an option on the original order. Second, we would have quoted stack pads and a tall truck adapter package. The shop bought both a la carte later, and the total was somewhat higher than the pre-install bundle.

Everything else about the install — the model choice, the placement, the wide column spacing, the diagonal workbench — we would do exactly the same. That is the honest metric of a good install: a year in, the customer is not wishing he had made different big decisions, only wishing he had bundled the small extras.
