When an Ankeny customer called us last spring asking about a 2 post car lift for his growing overland-truck project, he wasn’t sure whether the lift belonged in phase one or phase three of his garage build. We walked him through the sequence, because on a ground-up shop the 2 post car lift decision drives concrete, ceiling, ventilation, and electrical — not the other way around. This article is his story, from empty slab to first transmission drop, framed as a case study any Iowa builder can use. The Ankeny Build — Where the Owner Started
The owner in Ankeny is a first-generation garage builder. He’d bought a 30×40 slab-on-grade shop shell late in the previous year and was working through it a phase at a time — insulation, mini-split, then equipment. His truck is a modified full-size overlander with skidplates, sliders, drawer system, and rooftop tent, and it sits around 6,800 pounds fueled. He wanted to service the transmission himself, plus do fluids, brakes, and the occasional axle reseal. A 10,000-pound 2 post car lift was the honest fit for his weight class — heavy enough for the built rig, small enough to avoid a full commercial column footprint and the electrical service that comes with it.
Before he called us he’d been shopping the low end of the market on Craigslist. What tipped him toward doing it right was a friend’s used lift dropping a Jeep on a driveway. He didn’t want a repeat. When we walked the shop together we talked through the three things that matter first: what he’s lifting, what the ceiling gives him, and what the slab actually is. He didn’t know the slab spec — a common gap for owners buying an existing shop shell. We planned a core sample and put the lift purchase on hold for two weeks while the paperwork came back from the concrete guys. That patience is the difference between a good install and a chased-tail install.
Why the Lift Comes Before the Slab Pour
If you have not poured concrete yet, buy the lift first. It sounds backwards, but every 2 post car lift on the market has a minimum slab thickness and PSI rating in its install manual, and if your pour doesn’t meet spec, your options are limited: cut and re-pour a footprint, add a footing pad, or move the lift. In Ankeny we caught this in time because the shop was existing. But if you are still planning, tell your concrete contractor you want a minimum of six inches at 3,500 PSI with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers in the lift bay, even if the rest of the pad is four inches.
Our Ankeny customer’s existing slab tested at 4.5 inches with light mesh. That met the minimum for a symmetric 10,000-pound clear-floor 2 post car lift under most manufacturer specs — but only barely. We recommended a bolt torque check at 30, 90, and 365 days, and we came back for the first two. If your slab is thinner or older, don’t guess. A cored, dry, dust-free anchor hole with the right diameter epoxy anchor is the difference between a lift you trust and a lift that migrates. It is worth doing right one time and never again.
Sequencing Ceiling, Overhead Bar, and Door Height
The ceiling drives the second-biggest install decision. Our Ankeny owner had 11 feet of clear height under the trusses and a 10-foot overhead door. That is enough for most 10,000-pound overhead-style lifts, but with the tent and roof rack on top, his truck stood 8 foot 5. He needed either a baseplate lift, which routes the equalizer cable across the floor between columns, or a low-profile overhead. We went with the baseplate — cleaner ceiling, no cable overhead, and no chance of the rooftop tent whacking the shutoff bar.
Baseplate lifts have a tradeoff: you walk over a bar between the columns. In a busy shop with rolling toolboxes that is worth thinking about, but in a home garage with one vehicle at a time it is a non-issue. We laid the columns out so the door swing didn’t foul the arms in the stored position, and we set the column spacing wide — 132 inches inside-to-inside — because his truck has 74 inches of body width plus mirrors. On a residential 2 post car lift install, mirror clearance and door interference cause more headaches than raw capacity. Measure the arm-swept area before you pull the trigger, not after.
Electrical, Air, and Transmission Jack Access
Our Ankeny customer had a 100-amp subpanel already, but no dedicated 220-volt circuit at the lift location. Most residential 2 post car lifts run on a 30-amp single-phase 220-volt circuit — some are 20-amp, so check your specific unit before the electrician bids. We had him pull one dedicated 30-amp with a rotary disconnect within arm’s reach of the power unit. He also added a 110-volt duplex on the opposite column for a droplight and battery charger, which sounds obvious but gets forgotten in half the builds we see.
Air was the other pre-install choice. He wanted a transmission jack, which for his truck’s 260-pound trans plus adapter runs a two-stage air/hydraulic. That means quality shop air at the lift — not a hobby compressor. We routed a 3/8-inch line from the compressor to each column, with a quick-connect at bumper height and another at floor height for impacts. A trans service on a full-size truck is a two-hour job with the right jack and a nightmare without one. If you plan on transmission work under a 2 post car lift, plan the air and the jack access before the lift ships from the factory.
Transmission Service on an Overland Truck
The first job under the new lift was a full transmission service on his overlander. Pan drop, filter, refill, and a torque converter drain. Under a 2 post car lift this is a completely different job than laying on a creeper. The truck was at 54 inches — chest height for him — with the pan directly in front of him. He caught 11 quarts on the pan drop plus about 5 out of the converter, and the whole service ran under two hours including the road test. On the floor it would have been a half day and a wrecked back.
What made it easier: the drop-end arms swung out of the way for pan clearance, the drive-through column layout gave him room to walk a big Ford transmission jack around, and the shutoff bar was well above his rooftop tent. He also used the truck-adapter kit on his trans jack — cheap insurance for a 260-pound part balanced on a hydraulic ram. If you are servicing modern trucks, a 10,000-pound lift is enough for capacity but you need to think about drop height and arm reach too. Both were dead-on for his rig, and that is what we optimize for on every home build.
What We Would Do Differently
If we built this shop again, we would do three things differently. First, we would run two dedicated 220-volt circuits, not one — one for the lift and a second for a future tire changer or welder. Adding a circuit later means cutting drywall. Second, we would set the shop-air compressor in an insulated closet with a duct to outside air, not inside the bay. Compressor heat and noise inside a small shop is worse than most people expect, and the closet also cuts the moisture load on the lines. Both are cheap during the build and painful to retrofit.
Third — and this is the big one — we would spec the lift and its footprint before the slab poured, not after. Our Ankeny customer got lucky with an adequate slab. Half the residential shops we bid have marginal concrete, and the honest answer is “you can install it but it needs a footing pour or a slab upgrade.” That conversation is a lot easier before the truck is in the shop. Iowa 2 Post Car Lift Install Timeline and Support
From the day he ordered his lift to the day it raised the overlander for the first time was 18 business days. Six of those were shipping from the factory to our Ames warehouse, seven were his electrical and prep work on his side, and two were our install crew on-site (one day for the mechanical set, one for anchor cure and cable tension). The final three were commissioning, a 30-day bolt torque check, and the first ALI-style inspection we ran with him watching so he could learn the routine. That last part matters — a lift is a five-figure tool that lasts 20 years if you inspect it and dies fast if you don’t.
Ongoing support looks like a bolt torque and cable inspection every year, cable replacement at the manufacturer’s interval or sooner if the visual inspection shows fraying, and a fresh coat of touch-up paint every few years on the columns.
