A family-owned garage on the Iowa-Nebraska border, now in the third generation, called us last spring about wiring in their first 2 post car lift. The grandfather had run the shop on a single-phase 100-amp panel since the 1970s, doing general daily maintenance for a farming community. His grandson wanted to modernize with a proper commercial column but was not sure whether the existing panel could handle it, whether single-phase was enough, or whether he was going to need a service upgrade. This article is the electrical deep-dive we walked him through, with the exact measurements we take before we quote, and the numbers we hand to the local electrician so nobody guesses.

Single Phase vs Three Phase: Which One You Actually Have

Rural shops in this part of the country are almost always single-phase 240V service. That is what the utility drops from the pole, and unless the shop has an old machine tool history — an original bandsaw or a big lathe from the 60s — three-phase is not on site. A 2 post car lift is available in both electrical configurations from every major manufacturer. The single-phase version uses a slightly larger motor and pulls more amps at start-up; the three-phase version uses a smaller motor and pulls fewer amps but lifts faster and runs cooler. For a farming-community shop like our Iowa-Nebraska customer, single-phase is what we quote every time. Nothing else pencils.

Confirming which phase you actually have is the first field measurement we ask for. Open the panel, count the incoming service wires, and photograph the meter socket from the outside of the building. Three incoming hot conductors mean three-phase; two hot conductors plus a neutral mean single-phase. Do not trust what the previous owner said. We have had multiple shops swear they had three-phase because the previous tenant left a rotary phase converter bolted to the wall, only to find out the utility service was single-phase all along. Measure the incoming service before you commit to a motor package on any 2 post car lift order.

Motor Draw and Breaker Sizing on Single-Phase 240V

A typical single-phase 240V motor on a 10,000-lb commercial 2 post car lift is rated for a locked-rotor draw around 60 to 80 amps at start-up, dropping to roughly 15 to 20 amps at running load. The breaker sizing is calculated to allow the start-up surge without nuisance tripping while still protecting the motor at running load. For most 10,000 to 12,000-pound configurations, that lands on a 30-amp two-pole breaker. Some larger 15,000-pound units want a 40-amp breaker. The manufacturer publishes the exact number on the electrical spec sheet, and we pass that number to the customer’s electrician before we ship.

Wire gauge matches the breaker. A 30-amp circuit at 240V single-phase over a run of 50 feet or less wants 10 AWG copper. Over 75 feet, it wants 8 AWG to keep voltage drop under 3 percent. Longer runs, larger conductor. This is not exotic wiring — any journeyman electrician does this every week — but the shop needs to know the run distance from the panel to the power column of the 2 post car lift before the wire gets pulled. Measure the actual route the wire will take, not the straight-line distance across the bay.

Panel Headroom: Can Your Existing Panel Handle It

A 100-amp single-phase panel in an older shop is the most common constraint we run into. Add up the existing loads: shop lights, air compressor, welder, tire changer, wall receptacles. If the compressor pulls 25 amps and the welder pulls 40 amps and the lights and receptacles pull another 20 amps at peak, you are already at 85 amps on a 100-amp service before the new lift is even connected. That is too close to the wall for comfort. NEC calculations use demand factors that reduce the theoretical peak, but a shop where the compressor kicks on while the lift is going up is a shop where the breaker trips.

The fix is not always a service upgrade. Sometimes it is a load audit. If the welder and the compressor never actually run at the same time as the lift — which is common in a small shop with one tech — the practical peak is well under the theoretical worst case, and the existing panel is fine. We ask the customer to walk through a typical Tuesday morning: what runs when? If the answer is that the lift and the compressor share the ceiling, we recommend a service upgrade before delivery. If the answer is that the lift runs alone, we do not.

Real Dimensions from the Iowa-Nebraska Install

The Iowa-Nebraska shop measured out at 24 feet wide by 32 feet deep, with a 12-foot ceiling and a 100-amp single-phase panel on the north wall. The 2 post car lift they wanted was a 10,000-pound symmetric overhead column, ALI Gold rated, with a motor rated at 220V single-phase and a 30-amp breaker requirement. Wire run from the panel to the powerpack column measured 42 feet through the ceiling and down the west column. Voltage drop calculation at 42 feet of 10 AWG copper on a 30-amp circuit came out to 2.1 percent — well under the 3 percent NEC guideline.

We asked the local electrician to pull a fresh 30-amp two-pole circuit on 10 AWG copper, terminate at a weatherproof disconnect within sight of the power column, and land in the powerpack junction box with strain relief. Total electrical cost for the customer was under a thousand dollars because the panel already had two open slots on adjacent bus bars. Had the panel been full, we would have added a service upgrade to the project. This is why the field measurements happen before we quote, not after.

Grounding, Bonding, and the Column-to-Column Detail

The powerpack column carries the motor and the electrical service; the free column is mechanically driven by the equalizer cables and has no electrical connection of its own. That is standard on every overhead 2 post car lift built today. But the free column still needs to be bonded — connected to the grounding electrode system — so that any fault current on the arms or cables finds a path back to the panel. We run a bare 8 AWG copper equipment ground from the powerpack column to the free column through the floor conduit, or through the overhead cross-tube channel if the run is easier that way.

Grounding is one of those details that never shows up in the pretty product photos but matters enormously on the day something goes wrong. A pinched wire in the overhead cable channel, an arm that catches a light fixture, a customer touching the column while the motor cycles — all of these depend on a proper equipment ground path. The local electrician usually knows how to do this; we hand them the manufacturer’s electrical drawing and they take it from there.

What Happens When Three-Phase Is Actually Available

A few of our Iowa-Nebraska border customers do have three-phase service, usually because there was a machine shop or a grain elevator on the parcel originally. If you have real three-phase 208V or 240V available, the three-phase motor package on a 2 post car lift is a genuinely nicer piece of equipment. The motor is physically smaller, the run current is lower, and the lifting cycle is a hair faster. If you have the service, take the three-phase package. If you do not, do not pay to add three-phase for a single lift — the utility cost and the phase converter alternative both dwarf the savings.

The one exception is a shop planning to add a second lift within a few years. If two lifts are on the horizon, three-phase becomes worth the investment because the same service will feed both motors comfortably. Ask us to run the math on your specific plan. What the Electrician Needs From You Before They Quote

When we hand a project to the customer’s electrician, we send four things: the manufacturer’s electrical spec page for the exact 2 post car lift model, a photo of the existing panel with the door open, a hand-drawn floor plan with the powerpack column marked and the wire run route sketched, and the measured run distance in feet. Those four pieces of information let the electrician quote firmly the first time. Skipping any one of them turns the electrical quote into a change order the day the crew shows up.
