A heavy-duty truck shop in northern Missouri called us wanting a real cost breakdown on adding a second bay with an atlas 2-post lift for engine oil pan gasket work and general drivetrain service on Class 4 and Class 5 trucks. He’d been quoted three different totals by three different suppliers and none of them agreed on what the true landed cost would be. We told him the reason quotes vary is that too many suppliers hide costs in freight, install labor, and site prep. Here’s the full line-item breakdown we ran for his site, from lift sticker through anchored-and-tested, so he could see every dollar.

Lift Price: The Sticker vs Reality

The sticker on the atlas 2-post lift we quoted for this shop was in the mid-four-thousand range for the standard 12K commercial-grade model. That’s the number every supplier leads with, and it’s the number that gets buyers in trouble because it doesn’t include anything else. The sticker covers the lift itself — columns, arms, hydraulic power unit, cables, and standard hardware. It does not cover freight, taxes, install labor, anchors, electrical, or any site prep. Some suppliers advertise “free shipping” and build the freight into the sticker; others break it out.

For a heavy-duty shop, the 12K sticker is a reasonable starting point but rarely the right final capacity. We recommended stepping up to the 15K variant because Class 4 and Class 5 trucks fully loaded can push over 12K, and running a lift at ninety percent capacity every day is asking for hydraulic and cable wear. The 15K upcharge was around six hundred dollars over the 12K. On a shop that would be lifting heavy trucks daily for the next decade, that was the cheapest six hundred dollars in the quote. Buy the capacity you’ll actually use — not the minimum that just barely fits on paper.

Freight from Warehouse to Northern Missouri

Freight is the line item that surprises most buyers because two-post lifts are heavy, oversized, and ship LTL common carrier. The 15K Atlas we quoted weighed about twenty-four hundred pounds crated. LTL freight from the warehouse to northern Missouri came in at around seven-fifty for lift-gate residential delivery. Commercial dock-delivery would have been closer to five hundred, but the shop didn’t have a truck dock, so we spec’d lift-gate. The seven-fifty covers pickup at the warehouse, LTL transit, and residential lift-gate service at the destination.

What most buyers don’t realize is that freight quotes bounce week to week based on carrier availability and fuel surcharges. A quote good on Monday might be a hundred dollars different by Friday. We hold freight quotes for seven days from generation, and we tell buyers if they want to lock the quote to place the order before the window closes. On this specific job, our northern Missouri customer accepted the quote same-week and we shipped six business days later. If he had sat on the quote for three weeks, we’d have had to re-run freight and the number probably would have moved.

Concrete Coring and Testing

Site prep starts with concrete. The Missouri shop’s floor was a poured slab from the mid-nineties, and the owner didn’t know the thickness or the reinforcement layout. We recommended a concrete coring test before ordering anchors. A local concrete contractor came in, drilled a two-inch core at each intended column location, and returned samples for measurement. The floor turned out to be four-and-a-half inches of 3,500 psi concrete with rebar on twelve-inch centers — solid enough for a 15K two-post with wedge anchors.

Concrete coring costs around three hundred to five hundred dollars depending on the number of cores and travel time for the contractor. It’s optional in the sense that manufacturers publish minimum specs and let the customer verify however they choose. It’s non-optional in the sense that if the concrete fails after the lift is anchored, the fix is orders of magnitude more expensive than the coring test. We include coring in every heavy-duty quote as a recommended line item, and about seventy percent of buyers take it. The ones who skip it and get lucky save a few hundred dollars. The ones who skip it and get unlucky replace a slab.

Anchor Bolts, Chemical vs Wedge

Anchor selection is the next line item. Wedge anchors — the standard concrete anchors that ship with most lifts — are the cheapest option and work fine on newer, thicker concrete with no cracks or joints near the column bases. Chemical anchors — epoxy-set threaded rod — are the upgrade for older concrete, thinner slabs, or floors with visible cracking. They cost roughly two to three times the wedge anchor price per bolt, and they cure overnight before you can torque the lift down. On the northern Missouri floor, we recommended chemical anchors despite the concrete testing well.

The reason was age. Thirty-year-old concrete carries micro-cracking invisible to the eye, and wedge anchors depend on the surrounding concrete holding the expansion sleeve under compression. Chemical anchors don’t rely on compression — they bond chemically to the concrete matrix through epoxy. For a heavy-duty shop lifting Class 4 and Class 5 daily, the incremental cost — about a hundred and fifty dollars for chemical over wedge on a two-post — was cheap insurance. Total anchor line item on this quote came in at around two hundred and fifty dollars including epoxy, threaded rod, and installation drill bits and epoxy gun rental.

Electrical Drop and Panel Upgrade

Every commercial two-post over 10K capacity typically runs on 220V single-phase or three-phase depending on the shop’s service. This particular shop had 220V single-phase already in the bay from a previous compressor install, but the outlet was on the wrong wall for the new lift. Electrical costs broke down as follows: forty feet of conduit run, one new dedicated 30-amp two-pole breaker in the existing panel, an outlet box within four feet of the driver-side column, and about four hours of licensed electrician labor. Total electrical line item was around six hundred dollars.

If the shop had needed a full panel upgrade — say a 100-amp subpanel to feed the bay — the electrical line would have doubled or tripled. Panel work varies wildly by jurisdiction and by what the existing service can handle. Northern Missouri residential electrical rates for licensed work were around ninety-five to one-ten an hour when we got the quote from the local electrician. Commercial shop rates in urban areas can be a third higher. Always get the electrical quote from a licensed local electrician before you commit to the lift install date, because electrical delays are the number-one reason installs slip.

Install Labor: The Cost Breakdown on an Atlas 2-Post Lift

Install labor on an atlas 2-post lift in a heavy-duty commercial bay runs about two-thousand five hundred to three thousand for a two-person crew including anchor drilling, column setup, arm assembly, hydraulic connection, cable routing, safety-lock adjustment, and full function testing. That number can vary depending on how far the crew has to travel, whether the site is prepped or not, and whether any surprises pop up during install. For this Missouri shop, we quoted twenty-eight hundred for a full turnkey install with our own crew.

Some buyers try to save the install labor by doing it themselves. We don’t recommend it on a heavy-duty commercial lift. The manufacturer warranty on some components requires installer certification, and improper anchor torque or cable adjustment can void the warranty entirely. On a home-garage 9K, DIY install is defensible for a mechanically-inclined owner. On a 15K commercial lift in a shop that will hammer it eight hours a day, professional install pays for itself in warranty protection and peace of mind. The atlas 2-post lift install on this job took about six hours from crew arrival to final test cycle.

Total Landed Cost and What We’d Change

Here’s the full line-item summary we handed our northern Missouri customer. Lift: forty-eight hundred (15K variant with upgrades). Freight: seven-fifty. Concrete coring: four hundred. Chemical anchors: two-fifty. Electrical: six hundred. Install labor: twenty-eight hundred. Miscellaneous consumables and pad extensions: three hundred. Total landed cost: just under ten thousand dollars from sticker to fully-anchored, tested, and running. That’s substantially more than the sticker alone, but it’s the honest number for a heavy-duty install with real capacity and no shortcuts.

What we’d change if we did this exact install again: probably nothing significant. If the buyer had wanted to save five hundred dollars, we could have downgraded to wedge anchors and taken the risk on the concrete micro-cracking — but we wouldn’t have recommended it. If freight had been available on a commercial dock delivery, we could have shaved two-fifty off the shipping line, but the site didn’t support it. The remaining costs were all essential for a heavy-duty commercial atlas 2-post lift installation that will run trouble-free for a decade or more. Any supplier quoting substantially less is hiding line items or cutting corners on a step you’ll pay for later.
