Checkpoint One: Vehicle Weight and Capacity Sizing
Suspension work on a farm shop typically means service pickups in the half-ton through one-ton range, older farm trucks with plow packages, and the occasional heavier vehicle when a neighbor asks a favor. The 9,000-pound and 10,000-pound Atlas columns cover half-tons and most three-quarter-tons; step up to a 12,000 or 15,000 for one-tons and heavy diesels. The rule we give farm shops is: whatever your heaviest vehicle is, round it up by a couple thousand pounds for the toolbox, load, snow, and mud that always shows up on a real work truck. An atlas 2-post lift rated for exactly the vehicle you have today is a lift rated too small for the vehicle you’ll have in three years.
The capacity number is also asymmetric across the columns. A 10,000-pound rating is per-lift, not per-arm. Split across four arms that’s 2,500 pounds each — plenty for a well-balanced service truck but tight if the truck is nose-heavy from a service body and a snowplow attachment. On very front-heavy vehicles, we sometimes recommend stepping to the next capacity class purely for arm-load safety margin.
Checkpoint Two: Arm Geometry and Suspension Access
Suspension work lives or dies on how much clearance you have around the wheel well after the vehicle is up. Symmetric-arm atlas 2-post lift geometry puts the columns even with the vehicle center and spreads the arms evenly, which gives balanced clearance but locates the columns near the doors. Asymmetric geometry rotates the columns rearward and shortens the front arms, which opens the driver and passenger doors wider and improves access to the front suspension. For a farm shop doing a lot of shock, ball joint, tie rod, and upper A-arm work, asymmetric can be the better geometry.
That said, asymmetric requires the tech to spot the truck a specific way, and if your farm shop has multiple family members using the lift including a nephew who’s learning, the discipline to spot correctly every time isn’t always there. Symmetric forgives sloppy spotting. We usually recommend symmetric to farm shops for that reason, with the exception of shops where one specific person will be the primary lift operator and cares deeply about the door-swing.
Checkpoint Three: Cylinder Design and Long-Term Seal Life
The hydraulic cylinders are the part of an atlas 2-post lift that most first-time buyers don’t think about at purchase time and then think about a lot around year eight. Cylinder seals are wear items. The rate of wear depends on cycles, fluid cleanliness, and how often the lift sits at load for extended periods. Farm shops that leave a truck up on the lift for two days to finish a leaf spring job put more cycles-equivalent wear on the seals than a shop that runs the lift up and down four times a day. That’s just how seal science works.
The good news on Atlas: rebuild kits are available and reasonably priced, and we stock them. A cylinder seal rebuild on an Atlas two-post is a job we’ve done in the field many times. If both cylinders on the same lift start seeping in the same year, that’s a sign of fluid contamination rather than manufacturing defect, and the fix is a rebuild of both plus a fluid flush. This is one reason we recommend buying from a supplier who stocks parts — trying to find a rebuild kit for a lift you bought through a tool truck seven years earlier is not fun.
Checkpoint Four: Cable and Sheave Inspection Access
Equalization cables on a two-post are what keep the two columns synchronized. If one cable fails, the lift can go out of level in a way that puts stress on the arm locks and, in the worst case, drops the vehicle on one side. Cables are wear items on any atlas 2-post lift and every two-post from every manufacturer. The design question at purchase time is: can you see and inspect the cables easily, or are they buried inside sheet metal covers that require disassembly to check? Some Atlas designs make the cable path visible with just a top cover off; others require pulling more panels.
We recommend a farm shop buy the design that makes cable inspection easy, because you will inspect them, and if you can’t do it in ten minutes with a flashlight you’ll do it in twenty years — which is too late. Checkpoint Five: Concrete, Ceiling, and Bay Dimensions
Farm shops in the Quad Cities range from purpose-built pole-barn shops with 14-foot ceilings and beautiful new concrete to converted machine sheds with 10-foot ceilings and 40-year-old slabs of unknown depth. Before you buy an atlas 2-post lift, measure the ceiling at the point directly above where the crossbar will go — not the peak of the roof, the actual overhead clearance. Under 12 feet steers you to a baseplate (floor-cable) design. Over 12 feet gives you the option of an overhead crossbar with padded shutoff, which most farm techs prefer.
Concrete depth: minimum 4 inches on a light-commercial 9,000 or 10,000-pound column, more for heavier units. Concrete psi: 3,000 minimum. If your shop is on an old slab, get it cored by a concrete sub before you buy the lift. This is the number one reason we’ve had to delay an install — the shop bought the columns before verifying the slab, and the slab wasn’t safe to anchor into. Better to spend a hundred dollars on a core test than to buy a lift you can’t set.
Checkpoint Six: Power Supply and Motor Compatibility
Most farm-shop atlas 2-post lift installs run on 220-volt single-phase power, which is what a shop compressor and welder already use. Verify you have a dedicated 220 circuit near where the lift’s power unit will sit — usually one of the two columns has the power unit mounted to it, and the circuit needs to reach it. If your shop only has 110, adding a 220 drop is a modest electrical job that a local sub can do in a morning. If your shop has three-phase power available (rare in farm shops, common in industrial buildings), some Atlas power units can be spec’d for three-phase, which is more efficient but also more expensive.
Ask the supplier what motor is spec’d on the lift at quote time. A 2-horsepower single-phase 220 motor is standard on the light-commercial Atlas columns. Anything smaller and the lift will feel slow under load; anything bigger and you’re paying for horsepower you don’t need. Get the answer in writing before install.
Checkpoint Seven: Post-Purchase Support and Parts Availability
The final and most-overlooked pre-purchase checkpoint is: who will be here when the lift needs service in year seven? Buying an atlas 2-post lift from a tool truck or an online-only reseller usually means you’re on your own for service, and finding cables, cylinders, rebuild kits, and locking pawls seven years later can be genuinely difficult.
