An RV and trailer service shop in Cedar Falls called us in early 2025 wanting an auto lift dedicated to brake service on utility trailers, cargo haulers, and light-duty tow rigs. They had been doing brake work on jack stands for years and the workflow had gotten dangerous. The owner had watched two techs almost get pinned under a tandem-axle trailer during a wheel-bearing service, and he decided that day to build a real lift bay. The install went in six months ago, and we recently walked through his first-year experience end to end to see what worked, what surprised him, and what we would do differently. This is that story.

The Cedar Falls RV shop that needed an auto lift for trailer brake work
The shop services roughly 200 trailers a year, split between utility trailers, cargo trailers, small enclosed haulers, and a handful of gooseneck livestock trailers. Weights range from 3,500 lb single-axle utilities to 14,000 lb tandem-axle enclosed cargo. Brake service and wheel-bearing service are the two most common jobs. Occasional axle straightening after curb strikes and light frame repair.
Trailer brake service is unusual compared to passenger-car brake work because trailer wheels come off from ground level or from a slightly-raised position rather than at chest height. That changes what an auto lift needs to do. A trailer only needs to come up 24-36 inches for comfortable wheel access, not the 48-60 inches typical of car brake service. A conventional two-post lift raises much higher than needed, which is fine but not efficient. The other unusual factor is trailer geometry. Cargo trailers can be 8 feet wide at the body, so the lift’s drive-thru clearance and column spacing has to accommodate that width. Utility trailers with drop axles have very low ground clearance and the lift’s arm pad heights have to reach a low frame point. We spent an hour with the owner mapping out his trailer mix before recommending a specific lift model. Trailer service is not a standard application and standard passenger-car recommendations do not fit cleanly.
Which brand we recommended and why
We recommended a Rotary SPO16 16,000 lb symmetric two-post with 3-stage arms and extended low-height frame adapters. The 16K capacity was overkill for most trailer work but appropriate because the shop wanted to occasionally service the customer tow rigs, Ford F-350 dually pickups, which run 8,500-10,500 lb loaded. The extra capacity gave headroom.
Extended low-height frame adapters were the key spec. Standard truck frame adapters set the arm pad about 5 inches off the ground at the lowest arm setting. Some utility trailers have frame rails only 4-5 inches off the ground when the trailer is fully lowered on the coupler. The extended adapters we spec’d bring the pad height down to 3.5 inches, which handles all but the very lowest drop-axle trailers. For those, the shop uses a set of solid steel low-profile pucks that further reduce reach height by another inch. That covers 99% of the trailer mix. The Rotary brand recommendation came down to parts pipeline and the shop’s local dealer relationship, which was us. Challenger, Forward, and BendPak would all have worked mechanically. Rotary won because we stock more Rotary parts in Iowa than any other brand and can service warranty and non-warranty issues faster on Rotary. Brand history and parts pipeline drove the recommendation more than any technical spec difference.
Brand history matters more than most buyers realize
Rotary has been building two-post lifts since 1925, longer than any competitor. Their designs have been refined over four generations of engineering, with modern models like the SPO16 sharing the fundamental architecture of lifts that have been in continuous production since the 1980s. That matters because parts made for a 1990s Rotary SPO12 will still fit a 2025 SPO16 with minimal adaptation.
Challenger has been around since 1980 and Forward since 1965, both respected brands with strong parts pipelines. BendPak, dating to 1965, occupies a slightly different niche focused on higher-volume, more competitive pricing. All are serious brands. The reason brand history matters for a shop like this Cedar Falls RV operation is that trailer service is a long-tail business. Trailers stay in service for 20-30 years, meaning the shop will need to service equipment older than the lift for the next two decades. Having an auto lift whose parts pipeline is stable and predictable over that horizon is worth more than saving $500 on the initial purchase. Rotary’s 100-year track record gives high confidence that parts will still be available in 2045 when this lift is 20 years old and still turning brake jobs. That kind of longevity is the reason we recommend established brands to trailer service shops specifically. Turnover in trailer service equipment is slow; stability matters more than innovation.
Parts pipeline: the real dividing line between brands
Parts pipeline is the practical measure of a brand’s real value to a working shop. For this Cedar Falls RV shop, the parts pipeline test looks like this: if a solenoid fails on a Wednesday afternoon, when is the replacement in the shop’s hands? For a Rotary auto lift with us as the dealer, the answer is Thursday morning via next-day delivery from our Ames warehouse or, if we do not have it, Friday morning from Rotary’s Kansas City regional warehouse.
For Challenger, the same failure resolves Thursday afternoon or Friday depending on Louisville shipping. For Forward, similar timeline to Rotary because Forward’s parts are largely interchangeable with Rotary under the same parent company. For BendPak, Thursday or Friday depending on which of their two US warehouses stocks the specific part. Effectively, all four brands can put warranty and non-warranty parts in Cedar Falls within one to two business days of a failure call. In practice, that is fast enough for any shop. Where the pipeline matters more is for the discontinued or hard-to-find items, seals for older cylinders, replacement decals for ALI compliance, factory-specific bolts and hardware. Rotary’s long history and our deep local stock mean we can source almost any Rotary part for a lift up to 40 years old. That is not true for the other brands, whose older parts sometimes require aftermarket substitution.
Month one through month six on the auto lift
The Cedar Falls install went in April. First trailer went on the lift day one. Month one was almost entirely learning the workflow. The techs had been working from jack stands for 15 years and had to adapt to lift-based work, which sounds trivial but actually involves rethinking where tools go, where the trailer is staged, and how many wheels come off at once.
By month three, the techs had settled into a rhythm and the auto lift was doing roughly 15-18 brake jobs a week, up from 8-10 on jack stands. The productivity jump was larger than expected. The owner attributed it to reduced fatigue and reduced setup time between jobs. Months four and five were mostly uneventful. One minor issue in month four: a proximity switch on the safety-cam mechanism started intermittently failing to signal engagement. We came out, diagnosed it, and replaced the switch under warranty. Total downtime: two hours. Month six the shop hit its stride, running an average of 22 trailer jobs a week plus the occasional tow rig service. The lift was fully paid back on productivity gains by the end of month six, well ahead of the owner’s 12-month projection. That is a typical outcome when a shop moves from jack stands to a real lift for a service they do daily.
First service and what we found
ALI-required initial inspection is 30 days after install. We came out and checked anchor torque, cable tension, hose fittings, cylinder function, safety-lock engagement, and control-handle operation. Two of the eight anchors needed a 5-foot-pound re-torque, which is normal for a new install as concrete beds in. Everything else was in spec.
Six-month ALI-style inspection is not officially required but we like to do it for new commercial installs. All eight anchors held torque, cables showed no fraying or corrosion, hoses showed no seepage, and the cylinder was operating smoothly. Pad-adapter wear was minimal, showing only cosmetic marks from repeated trailer frame contact. Total inspection time was 90 minutes and cost the shop nothing under our standard installation-year service coverage. The auto lift was in exactly the condition we expected at six months. No surprises, no early failures, no concerns. The one warranty item, the proximity switch in month four, was resolved the same day. That is the outcome we tell customers to expect from a good brand with a good local dealer. It is worth the small premium over unbranded import lifts because your shop keeps running instead of waiting on parts.
What we would tell any Cedar Falls RV or trailer shop
Three lessons for any Cedar Falls or northeast Iowa RV and trailer service shop. First, if you are still doing wheel-off trailer service on jack stands, get a real auto lift. The productivity gain pays for the lift within one year of daily use, and the safety improvement is uncountable but real. The shop we worked with had two near-miss incidents on jack stands. They have had zero on the lift.
Second, spec extended low-height adapters if you service low-frame trailers. Standard truck adapters do not reach frame rails on drop-axle trailers, and forcing a fit is dangerous. The adapter option is a small line item at purchase and it changes what you can service. Third, buy a brand with a strong parts pipeline into Iowa. Rotary, Forward, Challenger, and BendPak all qualify. Off-brand imports do not.
