Measure the bay before you shop, not after

Before you pick a model, grab a tape measure and write down four numbers: bay width column-to-column, bay length door-to-back-wall, floor-to-lowest-truss height, and door-open height when the overhead is rolled all the way up. On auto lifts for home garage installs, we want at least 11 feet of clear width for a two-post with the columns spaced properly, and 12 feet if you want any elbow room between the arms and your workbench. A 30-by-40 pole barn with 12-foot side walls — a common setup around Marion and the Cedar Rapids metro — is more than enough room for most consumer two-post lifts, but only if the truss chord isn’t hanging down into the drive path.

The second measurement people forget is the door swing. If your overhead door tracks come inboard as they roll up, that eats another 6 to 8 inches of usable ceiling. Most hobbyists ask for a lift that will raise a passenger vehicle at roughly 7,000 pounds or less. Fair enough, but the number that really matters isn’t the vehicle you own today. It’s the heaviest thing you’ll ever put on this lift over the next 15 years. A 10,000-pound two-post like a Rotary SPOA10 or a Challenger CL10 gives you a huge margin for a half-ton pickup, an EV crossover with battery weight, or a buddy’s Suburban that shows up with a bad wheel bearing. For anyone doing CV axle and half-shaft work on modern all-wheel-drive vehicles, 10,000 pounds is our default recommendation.

When we spec auto lifts for home garage buyers, we lean toward the higher rating every single time. The price delta between an 8,000-pound and a 10,000-pound consumer two-post is usually only a couple hundred dollars, and the extra rating buys you not just capacity but taller columns and wider drive-through openings on most models. Undersizing is also the number-one reason we get called out to inspect a lift that just doesn’t feel right anymore — usually because it’s been living at 90 percent of its rated capacity for years and the cables have stretched. Buy the bigger lift the first time.

Ceiling height and the stored-vehicle math

A lot of Marion buyers want to do CV axle work AND store a second car underneath. That’s a specific problem, and it’s a good one. Here’s the math we run for every stacked-parking auto lifts for home garage install: overall height of the lifted vehicle, plus a 6-inch clearance under the parked car, plus the deck or platform thickness, plus 4 inches to the ceiling. For two mid-size sedans stacked, you can usually squeeze it into an 11-foot clear ceiling. For a lifted pickup on top of a passenger car, you need 13 feet or more.

This is where a four-post storage lift beats a two-post for pure stacking. The four-post gives you drive-on ramps, mechanical safety locks that click every couple of inches so you’re not committed to the max height, and a wider deck for uneven vehicle sizes. A two-post with a jack tray and asymmetric arms is better for wrenching, worse for long-term storage. If storage is 60 percent of your use case, get a four-post like the Rotary SM14 or an equivalent home-storage model. If wrenching is 60 percent, get the two-post and store the second car on the slab.

Two-post vs four-post auto lifts for home garage CV work

CV axle and half-shaft replacement is the specific job you mentioned, and it changes the geometry decision quickly. A two-post lifts the vehicle by the frame or pinch-welds, so the wheels hang free — perfect for pulling an axle out of a hub. A four-post lifts the vehicle by the tires, so the suspension is loaded and the wheel is sitting on the runway. To pull an axle on a four-post, you need rolling jacks to unweight the front, and that adds another $1,200 to $1,800 to the effective setup cost.

For a hobbyist in Marion doing three or four CV axles a year, a two-post SPOA10 with symmetric arms is the right pick. The columns are around 11 feet tall, the drive-through width is around 11 feet, and the arms swing wide enough to clear the rocker panels on modern crossovers. Auto lifts for home garage owners who also want to stack a stored vehicle should consider the two-post as their primary tool and use Race Ramps or a low-profile creeper for the stored car — a much simpler answer than trying to make a single lift do both jobs perfectly.

Slab thickness and anchoring you cannot skip

Concrete is the part everyone underestimates. Consumer two-post lifts require 4.25 inches of 3,000-PSI concrete minimum, and most manufacturers spec 4.5 inches to keep the warranty intact. Four-post storage lifts are more forgiving because the load spreads over four feet under runways, but even those want a solid slab. If your pole building floor was poured as a shop floor rather than an engineered garage slab, it might be a nominal 4 inches and 3 inches in spots where the crew got sloppy near the edges.

Before install day, we ask for a core sample or, at minimum, we drill a 3/8-inch test hole in the exact spot where a column will land. If you’re still building new, tell your concrete contractor you want 5 inches of 4,000-PSI with rebar on 12-inch centers under the lift footprint. That’s around $300 extra on a 30-by-40 pour, and it separates a lift that lasts 25 years from one that cracks the slab in 18 months. Meeting the minimum is a warning sign here, not a green light.

Power, air, and door swing on install day

Almost every consumer two-post we install runs on 220V single-phase, 20-amp. Some entry-level lifts run on 110V but take longer to raise. For auto lifts for home garage use we recommend the 220V unit — you already have a dryer outlet somewhere, and running a dedicated 220V circuit to the lift is straightforward for any licensed electrician. Confirm your panel has room for a 20-amp double-pole breaker before you buy. Compressed air isn’t required unless you’re running pneumatic safety locks, in which case a small 25-gallon compressor at 90 PSI is plenty.

The door-swing question comes up on install day more than anywhere else. Our install truck is 28 feet long, and we need to swing the lift columns from lying flat on the trailer to standing upright inside your bay. If your overhead door is 9 feet wide, we can walk them in easily. If your only opening is an 8-foot side-entry door, we’re taking the columns off the truck and carrying them in on end.
