Start with your ceiling height, not your budget
Ceiling height is the single hardest constraint to work around on auto lifts for home garage installs. An eleven-foot ceiling opens up standard two-posts if you accept that a lifted truck may kiss the hood on the crossbar. Four-post lifts win when the primary use is storage and light service, because a four-post can hold a car indefinitely while another parks below. Capacity: choose the safe overkill
Lift capacity should always be chosen with headroom to spare over the heaviest vehicle you plan to service. A half-ton pickup with a full tank of gas, a topper, and a full toolbox in the bed can push five thousand pounds. A three-quarter-ton diesel can push seven.
