Step One: What Are You Actually Doing on the Lift?

The first branch of any decision tree is use case, not budget. A lift that lives its life in oil-change and driveline mode is a different machine than a lift that stores a car six months out of the year. The middle tier ($4,500 to $6,500 turnkey installed) gets you a Rotary or Challenger 10,000 lb 2-post professionally set up. The upper tier ($7,000+) gets you extended-height columns, heavier arm sets, and specialty features like air-line kits and alignment-ready arms.

For most home garage use, the middle tier is the value sweet spot. You get the parts pipeline, the install quality, and the warranty, without paying for features you won’t use. Our Sioux City crew chief landed in the middle tier and had money left over for a small air compressor upgrade — which is the right way to allocate a $6,000 shop-building budget. Self-install is legal, common, and sometimes the right call. Turnkey install in his 12-foot sidewall pole building came in around $5,200 delivered and installed. He self-installed the air-line kit later, which is a two-hour job and doesn’t need a lift tech.

That configuration will handle race-car service, occasional truck work, and the passenger cars in the household for the next 20 years without meaningful maintenance beyond routine cylinder-seal replacement someday.
