Exhaust and driveline work were the main jobs he wanted to bring in-house — the tickets he was paying commercial rates for that he could handle himself with the right lift. He wanted to compare two specific configurations side by side: a 12,000-pound heavy-duty two-post versus a 14,000-pound drive-on four-post, both installed on a properly prepped slab. What a small-fleet home shop actually needs from a lift

A small-fleet operator running eight vehicles is doing enough regular service that a home shop pays for itself quickly. His fleet was three heavy-duty pickups, three service vans, and two light box trucks. Curb weights ranged from about 6,500 pounds on the pickups to just under 12,000 on the box trucks fully loaded. That immediately eliminated the standard 10K-lift class — you never buy right at your ceiling. Anything he installed had to handle at least 14,000 pounds nominal to leave a real safety margin for the heaviest vehicle in the fleet.

The work he wanted to do at home was exhaust replacement, muffler service, driveline U-joint replacement, and general underbody inspection. All wheels-on or wheels-off compatible. Frequency was about two to three service events a week across the fleet during his busy season. That’s enough duty cycle to justify a proper commercial-grade lift, not a hobbyist tier. His Des Moines metro home garage was a new-build 40 by 40 pole barn with 14-foot sidewalls and a freshly poured slab. Configuration A: 12,000-pound two-post with heavy-duty arms

Configuration A is a Rotary or Challenger 12,000-pound heavy-duty two-post overhead with adjustable heavy-duty arms and truck adapters. Rise on this class is typically 74 inches, overall column height around 155 inches, which comfortably fits under a 14-foot sidewall with plenty of clearance. The arms are three-stage front, two-stage rear, rated for the full 12K, with pad restraints and truck adapter columns for lifting frame rails on the box trucks. ALI Gold certified. Chain-drive equalized. Every safety feature identical to a smaller two-post, scaled up appropriately.

The advantage of Config A for exhaust and driveline work is wheels-off access. You can pull a driveshaft or drop an exhaust with the wheels dangling, which gives you total freedom under the vehicle. The disadvantage is arm placement time — every vehicle change means repositioning the arms, seating the pads on the specified lift points, and cycling up. For a fleet of eight vehicles moving through service on a regular cadence, that arm-placement time adds up over months. Not a dealbreaker, but a real workflow consideration. Configuration B: 14,000-pound four-post with sliding jacks

Configuration B is a BendPak, Rotary, or Challenger 14,000-pound four-post drive-on lift with a pair of sliding rolling jacks on the crossbars. Rise on this class is typically 74 inches at platform top, with the sliding jacks lifting the wheels an additional 20 inches or so when engaged. Runway length is around 210 inches, which handles every vehicle in his fleet including the box trucks. Overall lift height at full rise is around 96 inches, which sits well under a 14-foot ceiling. The advantage of Config B is drive-on speed. Every vehicle change is a two-minute drive-on, chock, and cycle up. No arm placement. For a fleet running two to three service events a week across eight vehicles, that time savings compounds significantly. Wheels-off work is still fully possible using the sliding jacks — you engage the jack under the vehicle frame or axle, lift the wheels free, and work as if it were a two-post. The disadvantage is up-front cost. Config B is meaningfully more expensive than Config A because of the sliding jacks and the additional runway steel. That’s the tradeoff we walk through.

Concrete slab and rebar requirements for both configurations

Both configurations require a properly prepared slab. For the 12K two-post, we spec 5 inches of 4,000-PSI concrete with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers at mid-depth, cured a minimum of twenty-eight days. That’s a step up from the standard 4-inch, 3,000-PSI spec used for a 10K residential lift. The anchor bolts on a 12K lift are longer and thicker and impose more point load at the base plate. The heavier slab spec keeps the anchors from walking over years of duty-cycle use.

For the 14K four-post, we spec the same 5 inches of 4,000-PSI concrete with rebar reinforcement, though the load distribution across four column bases means slightly lower point load per anchor. In either case, we do not install onto slabs that don’t meet the spec. Our Des Moines metro small-fleet customer had a fresh pour done specifically to our spec sheet before we quoted the lift — that’s the ideal sequence. If you’re retrofitting into an existing slab, we test first. Slab spec is the boundary condition on which everything else in an auto lifts for home garage build depends.

Exhaust and driveline access: how each configuration handles it

Exhaust work needs the entire underbody accessible — from the manifold flange all the way back to the tailpipe hanger. A two-post gives you that access with the wheels off, which means nothing is in the way of your reach. A four-post platform runs along both sides of the vehicle underbody, which slightly narrows your side-to-side working room. In practice, most exhaust work happens directly under the centerline of the vehicle where the four-post runways aren’t in the way. But if you need to swing a long section of exhaust pipe out sideways, the two-post is cleaner.

Driveline U-joint work is similar. You need access to the yokes and the shaft body. Both configurations give you that access, but Config A gives you slightly better lateral swing room. Config B compensates with the sliding jacks — with the wheels lifted by the jacks and the vehicle stable on the runways, driveline work is fully doable. Neither configuration is the wrong choice. This is a workflow-preference call for a small-fleet operator running auto lifts for home garage service on a regular cadence, not a right-or-wrong decision.

Cost and timeline side by side

Config A — the 12K two-post — sits in the low-teen-thousands installed. That includes the lift, the heavy-duty arms and adapters, the 5-inch slab spec verification, install labor, and function-test walkthrough. Delivery within the Des Moines metro is same-week and install takes a day. Config B — the 14K four-post with sliding jacks — sits in the high-teen-thousands installed. Amortized over a ten to fifteen year service life against the time savings on repeated vehicle changes, Config B often pays back its premium within two to three years for a small fleet with real duty cycle. For a hobbyist or a single-vehicle home garage, Config A is the smarter buy. For eight fleet vehicles running two to three services a week, Config B’s drive-on speed adds up.
