Four-posts are less demanding on height because you’re rolling drive-on runways up rather than lifting a body over swing arms. A four-post at full extension typically stops around 76 to 80 inches of runway height, plus the vehicle. That fits comfortably in a 12-foot pole building and even a well-planned 10-foot build if you accept a shorter reach for undercarriage work. Two-Post Asymmetric in a 30×40 Pole Building

A 30×40 pole building gives you flexibility, but the two-post asymmetric layout still has to respect column spacing and the swing radius of the arms. We spec a two-post to land columns roughly 11 feet 6 inches apart on center, with about 3 feet of clearance from the nearest wall on the loading side and 2 feet on the opposite side. In a 30-foot bay depth, you put the columns roughly 20 to 24 feet from the overhead door so a full-size pickup nose clears the door frame when the lift is at working height.

The asymmetric column rotation lets the driver door swing open cleanly at working height, which matters if you’re getting in and out to grab tools. On tire rotation specifically, arm swing is your friend: you can position pads under the frame rails and clear the wheel well entirely, meaning a rotation is four wheels off in under ten minutes once the vehicle is set. Four-Post with Rolling Jack: The Alternative Configuration

A four-post carries the vehicle on its wheels via runways, and a hydraulic rolling jack slides between the runways to lift either axle when you need the wheels off for tire rotation. That two-step lift is slower than a two-post for pure wheel work, but it more than makes up for it in versatility.

Storage capacity is the honest advantage. Park the winter beater on the lift, park the summer car underneath, and rotate seasonally without ever pushing either car outside. For a pro shop owner running the shop full-time and using the home lift as a nights-and-weekends personal tool, that flexibility is worth the extra step. And the runways make brake bleeding, exhaust checks, and driveline work more straightforward than most people expect. Overhead Door Swing and the Arm-in-the-Way Problem

A four-post is more forgiving here because the runway design keeps everything low until the vehicle is loaded. But four-posts still have to respect the drive-on approach length — you need enough runway approach for a full-size pickup or SUV to line up straight before rolling on. Tire Rotation Workflow on Each Configuration

Tire rotation is a repetitive task, and small workflow differences add up over hundreds of rotations. On a two-post, the workflow is: pull in, set arms under the pinch welds, raise to working height, hit the four wheels with your impact, rotate pattern, torque, drop. In good hands with a decent air setup, that’s an 8-to-12-minute job. On a four-post with rolling jack, add the step of positioning the jack between the runways, raising one axle, spinning tires, dropping, and repeating for the other axle. Four-posts spread the load across eight base plates on the runways, so slab thickness is less critical. A four-post will install cleanly on a 4-inch garage slab as long as it’s cured and level. If your slab isn’t yet poured, tell your concrete contractor you’re putting in a lift and where. A saw-cut trench for the two-post crossover hose (or an overhead crossover option if you don’t want to cut concrete) is easier to plan into the pour than to retrofit later.
