An overlanding builder in West Des Moines called us last summer with an unusual ask. He runs a rig-modification side hustle out of a detached three-stall garage — bumpers, sliders, ladders, roof racks — and he was tired of dropping his 6,500-pound rig at a friend’s shop every time he needed underbody access. He wanted his own lift. But he wasn’t sure whether to run an overhead-style two-post that anchors the cross bar up high or a baseplate style that keeps the runs at the floor. This case study walks through what we quoted him, what he chose, and what real auto lifts for home garage overlanders should think about before ordering.

The West Des Moines overlanding build we quoted last summer
The customer’s detached garage measures 24 by 36 with 11-foot sidewalls and a poured floor around 5 inches thick — a typical West Des Moines suburban build from about ten years ago. His rig is a full-size Land Cruiser with a rooftop tent, front bumper, drawer system, and a 20-gallon water tank. Loaded, it lands right around 6,500 pounds. Empty, it’s about 5,400. He wanted a lift that could raise the rig fully so he could weld a hitch mount underneath, then hold it up steady while he ran wiring for a rear compressor and audit his skid plate hardware.
His first instinct was a two-post 10K asymmetric. That’s a common home-garage default. But we asked him one question that changed the direction of the whole quote: what’s the tallest point on your rig? Answer: 8 feet 4 inches, roof tent closed. That number matters because a symmetric or asymmetric two-post carries the vehicle up until either the top of the vehicle hits the overhead bar or the wheels reach maximum rise. With 132 inches of ceiling and an 8-foot 4-inch rig, we had exactly 3 feet 8 inches of headroom before the tent kissed the bar. That’s the whole conversation right there.
Overhead vs baseplate: what really changes between the two
An overhead lift routes the equalization cables, hydraulic lines, and safety bar across the top of the two columns. Its advantage is a clean, uncluttered floor — you don’t trip over a hose or a cable when you’re moving under the vehicle. The disadvantage is that the crossbar eats ceiling. Most overhead 10K two-posts sit around 145 to 150 inches tall overall. If your ceiling is 132 inches — like our West Des Moines customer’s — an overhead won’t even fit, period. That’s a physical constraint you can’t work around.
A baseplate lift routes those same lines through a low channel across the floor between the columns. The column tops stop at roughly 108 to 116 inches, well under a 132-inch ceiling. The tradeoff is that you now have a raised channel between the columns you have to step over. For a builder constantly rolling a cart, that matters. For someone doing overland-style modifications where you work directly under one section at a time, it’s a fine tradeoff. Both styles are ALI Gold certified and mechanically identical on the safety-lock behavior. Baseplate opens up auto lifts for home garage projects in buildings that would otherwise be too short.
Why ceiling height decides most auto lifts for home garage projects
Ceiling is the single most binding constraint on auto lifts for home garage builds. Slabs can be reinforced. Electrical can be run. Doors can be replaced. But you cannot cheaply raise a ceiling in an existing building, and most builders won’t retrofit the header on a new build after the fact. So we start every conversation with a laser reading of the exact overhead height at the crown, then again at the beam or truss chord. Those two numbers together set the ceiling for the lift decision.
If the reading is 144 inches or above — 12-foot sidewalls or better — an overhead-style two-post generally fits, and we quote overhead. If it’s 132 to 143 inches, we lean baseplate. If it’s under 132 inches, we’re either looking at a four-post storage lift with a low overall height, a mid-rise scissor, or a portable mobile column setup. Below 108 inches you’re really looking at rolling floor jacks and stands, and honestly we’ll tell you a lift is not the right answer. Our overlanding builder had 132 inches on the nose, which put him right at the boundary.
What the customer picked and why the baseplate won this time
He picked a Rotary baseplate two-post rated for 10,000 pounds with a lift rise of 71 inches and an overall column height of 112 inches. That gave him 20 inches of clearance from the top of his lifted, loaded rig to the ceiling — plenty of margin. The rise gets him a full 71 inches of underbody access with the arms fully extended, which is exactly what he needed for hitch welding and running rear compressor wiring. The reason baseplate won was the ceiling, plain and simple. If his building had been 12-foot sidewalls, we’d have quoted him an overhead and he’d have preferred it. But he made peace with the between-column base channel because he mostly rolls his tool cart down one side, not across. He’s been running that lift for a full winter now and hasn’t hit a single limitation. Annual inspection cadence for a home lift working on off-road rigs
Off-road builds are hard on lifts. The vehicles are heavier than their curb weight suggests, the mud and grit falls onto the arms and pads every time you raise one, and the frequency of use in a hobbyist builder’s shop can rival a small commercial operation. We recommend an ALI-certified annual inspection for every auto lift, home or commercial. For an overlanding builder specifically, we add a spring-and-fall grease service on the arm pins and a quarterly visual check of the cables and locks. Cable stretch is the single most common failure mode we find on home lifts. A cable that reads 3/8-inch nominal on the spec sheet should measure within a couple thousandths of that when we mic it. Anything under and we replace as a pair. Locks should engage crisply every couple of inches — you’ll hear the click through the whole rise — and they should hold the vehicle rigid when you set it down onto them. Any hesitation or grinding is a call to us. This is the routine we walk every customer through at delivery, and it’s the routine that keeps auto lifts for home garage builds safe year after year.
