How a border-country mobile mechanic decided the truck-and-jack routine was over
He was seven years into service-truck work when his back finally told him no. Half his week was on the Nebraska side of the river, half on the Iowa side, and every wheel bearing job took an hour longer than it needed to because he was fighting a floor jack and a set of jack stands on customer driveways. The kicker was that his own fleet, two work trucks, a project car, and a farm ute, never got serviced. He had a 30×40 pole barn with a concrete floor that he used to store parts, and it sat unused as a shop bay.
The conversation started when he emailed us asking about a used two-post he had seen at a friend’s diesel shop across the state line. He knew the brand but not the model. He knew he needed at least eight thousand pounds of capacity. For wheel bearing work on a Super Duty you need three things: enough capacity to lift the loaded truck with confidence, arms that will swing to a proper pinch point behind the front tires, and enough overhead room that a raised cab clears any hangings from the ceiling. His pole barn had twelve-foot sidewalls, which is right at the floor for two-post work. Some overhead-connect models will fit, but you have to be careful with the top beam and the shutoff arm. We landed on a ten-thousand-pound Rotary with a symmetric arm set and a low-profile arm option for his lower project car.
Symmetric arms matter for a solo tech doing bearings. When you are the only person in the shop and you need to slide a bearing puller into the hub, you want the arm cleared out of your reach zone. Asymmetric two-posts pull the vehicle toward the columns, which is great for door opening but crowded for a one-person hub job. From there it was concrete anchor pattern, panel placement, and whether he needed a bi-directional latch release, which for a shop of one is a nice-to-have, not a must. The 12-month no-interest, 90-day-deferred financing that closed the deal
Cash was the sticking point. He had the money, but not the appetite to write a check that big out of his working capital. Our lender runs a twelve-month no-interest program with a ninety-day payment deferral, and that offer is what got him to sign. The ninety days are meaningful. It gave him a quarter of billable work between install and first payment, which is enough runway to fold the lift into normal cash flow instead of taking it as a one-time hit against savings. Two-post versus four-post for a one-truck rural operator
He asked the question everybody asks: two-post or four-post. For a working mechanic who needs wheels-free access to hubs, brakes, suspension, and exhaust, a two-post is almost always the answer. Four-posts are storage machines with a rolling jack accessory that gets you sort-of wheels-free, but for real service you want the wheels hanging, and that means the vehicle held by the frame or pinch welds on a two-post. He was going to be under a truck four days out of five.
The tradeoff is storage. A four-post you can leave a car parked on top of overnight without a second thought. A two-post you technically can too, but nobody who works for a living leaves their good truck hanging from two symmetric arms if they do not have to. We solved his storage question separately, and the two-post gave him the daily-driver flexibility that made his auto lifts for home garage investment pay for itself in service revenue, not garage space. If you cannot pick one, tell your dealer how many hours per week you will be under a car versus over one, and the answer picks itself.
Payment schedule, first-year cash flow, and what he now bills per hub

Twelve months in the payment was gone and the equipment was his. The one thing we would change is the order of operations on the electrical.
