He had a $6,000 EV drivetrain sitting on the floor waiting for an oil pan gasket replacement on his personal daily-driver, and the wrong lift choice was going to cost him a week. This is the most common myth we bust when customers call about auto lifts for home garage installs, and the reality is almost the opposite of the internet folklore — overhead lifts are the better choice for most residential bays, and baseplate lifts create problems people do not anticipate.

Myth 1: Overhead lifts require a reinforced ceiling

The single biggest misunderstanding about auto lifts for home garage service is that the overhead crossbeam supports the vehicle. It does not. On an overhead two-post, the crossbeam carries the equalizer cables and the hydraulic hose crossover, plus the shutoff bar that stops the lift if the vehicle hits it. The vehicle weight travels down through the columns into the concrete slab, exactly the same as on a baseplate lift.

The crossbeam itself weighs 60 to 90 lb and sits at 145 to 150 inches above your slab. Your ceiling structure only has to clear that height — it carries zero load. We have installed overhead lifts under pole barn trusses, drop ceilings, and old-house rafters without any structural work. The forum posts warning people off overhead lifts are almost always written by users who confused the shutoff crossbar with a load-bearing beam.

Myth 2: Baseplate lifts are safer

Baseplate lifts route the equalizer cables and hydraulic line through a channel that runs across the floor between the two columns. That channel is either bolted to the slab or set into a shallow trench, and it becomes a permanent trip hazard, dolly hang-up, and dust magnet. On EV work specifically, that channel is a nightmare because rolling floor jacks, transmission jacks, and battery lifts all catch on it.

From a safety-cam and structural engagement standpoint, baseplate and overhead lifts are identical. Both use redundant safety locks in each column, both use ALI-certified components, and both meet the same ANSI standards for auto lifts for home garage or commercial use. The safety-cam engagement is column-based, not routing-based. So the baseplate design offers no lock or engagement advantage — only a different cable path that trades ceiling clearance for a floor obstruction.

Myth 3: You need a taller ceiling for overhead lifts

The math on this one surprises people. An overhead lift’s crossbeam sits 145 to 150 inches up, which means you need about 12 feet 3 inches of clear ceiling to install one. A baseplate lift’s columns are the same height at 145 to 147 inches, so you also need 12 feet 3 inches for the columns even though there is no crossbeam. The ceiling clearance requirement is nearly identical.

Where you actually save ceiling on a baseplate lift is the last 4 to 6 inches at maximum lift height — the crossbeam adds that much on an overhead unit. If your ceiling is exactly 11 feet 9 inches, you are excluded from most overhead auto lifts for home garage installs, and a baseplate is your only two-post option. Below 11 feet 6 inches, both are out and you need a scissor or a low-rise mid-rise instead. Above 12 feet 3, both configurations work, and we recommend overhead every time.

Myth 4: EV shops need baseplate for battery drops

This is the myth that had the West Des Moines EV specialist ready to spend money on the wrong lift. He believed he needed a clear overhead for a battery-drop hoist, and that a crossbeam would block a chain fall or overhead battery table. In reality, the crossbeam on overhead auto lifts for home garage installs is only 4 inches deep and sits at the outer edge of the lift envelope. It does not block the center working area at all.

Battery-drop work on EVs is done between the columns with either a scissor jack or a hydraulic battery table. The tables roll under the vehicle from the side, not from the ends where the crossbeam sits. The only genuine reason to prefer baseplate for EV work is if you plan to install a permanent overhead crane rail directly above the lift — and even then, most crane installations run outside the lift columns rather than through them. Myth 5: Baseplate is cheaper because it uses less steel

The list-price gap between comparable overhead and baseplate models is small, usually $150 to $300 either way depending on the brand. Baseplate lifts sometimes list slightly higher because the crossover channel and its cover add fabrication cost. On the used market, baseplate lifts often sell for less because buyers do not want the floor obstruction, but that discount reflects demand, not build cost.

Install labor is where the real cost hides. Baseplate lifts require a slab that is level end-to-end within a tight tolerance across the entire column-to-column span, because the crossover channel bolts down flat. On a typical residential slab with a floor drain slope, we end up shimming the channel with steel plates, which adds 2 to 4 hours to the install. Overhead installs are more forgiving because each column shims independently. For auto lifts for home garage buyers on older slabs, overhead is genuinely faster and cheaper to install.

Oil pan gasket work: where overhead pays off

The oil pan gasket job that started this whole conversation is a good example of why overhead lifts win in a home garage. Pulling an oil pan on many modern vehicles requires lowering the subframe, and the technician spends 20 minutes at a time on a creeper or a rolling stool moving fasteners with the vehicle at chest height. Every trip in and out of the workspace crosses the floor between the columns. A baseplate channel adds 15 to 20 seconds of navigation to every trip, and when you make 40 trips on a single job, that is real time lost.

The EV shop owner in West Des Moines ended up with an overhead 10K asymmetric two-post, and the oil pan gasket job that had been stuck in his garage for two weeks was done in an afternoon. He has since serviced customer EVs on the same lift with battery-drop work, subframe pulls, and full brake rebuilds — none of which required baseplate configuration.

How to actually choose between the two

The honest decision tree for auto lifts for home garage buyers is: if your ceiling is between 11 feet 6 inches and 12 feet 3 inches, buy baseplate because you have no other choice. If your ceiling is 12 feet 3 inches or higher, buy overhead because the floor obstruction is a real, daily downgrade in usability. That is it. Every other consideration — safety, structure, weight rating, cost — is close enough between the two that ceiling height should drive the decision.
