A collector in the Waterloo area called us in the spring of 2024 wanting to store two vehicles vertically and use the top slot for occasional transmission service on his weekend car. He had done the reading online and thought he wanted an overhead two-post. By the time we finished the site survey we had talked him into a baseplate configuration, and a year later he sent us a note thanking us for the switch. This is a first-year ownership story from that install: what he ordered, why we changed the plan, how the first transmission drop went, and what he would tell another collector looking at auto lifts installed in a similar barn build.

The Original Plan: An Overhead Two-Post

The collector had a 30×40 pole barn with a 12-foot side wall, concrete floor, and single overhead door. He wanted a two-post to store his 1970 Chevelle overhead with a daily driver underneath. His initial call to us was for a Rotary SPO12 overhead two-post, which is the workhorse of that category and a great lift in most bays.

What tripped him up was the actual clearance at the truss line. His pole barn was built with 2×10 rafters on 48-inch centers, and the drop from the peak to the lowest truss chord at the lift location was about 18 inches. That put his effective clearance at just under 10-foot-6. An overhead crossbar on the Rotary SPO12 needs about 12 feet minimum for the crossbeam plus lift-height to store a car with clearance underneath. He was two feet short, and he did not know it until we came out and measured. Getting auto lifts installed in a pole building sounds simple until the tape measure comes out.

Why We Switched to a Baseplate Configuration

Once the numbers were on paper, the choice was easy. A baseplate two-post moves the equalization bar and hydraulic runs from the top of the columns down into a low bar cast at the base. That freed up his full 10-foot-6 of vertical space for the two vehicles stacked. Instead of a Rotary SPO12 overhead, we quoted him a Rotary SPOA10 baseplate rated for 10,000 pounds, which is plenty for a Chevelle over a modern SUV.

He was worried about tripping over the baseplate bar, and honestly that was the main pushback we get on baseplate lifts. Our answer was to run a yellow safety bar and a wheel-friendly bevel on the bar cover, so he could roll a tool cart over it without catching. A year in he tells us he never notices the bar, and he has full storage clearance he would not have had with the overhead. For collectors with lower ceilings, this is why we so often steer them toward baseplate for auto lifts installed in a pole building or converted barn.

Slab and Anchor Work in a Pole Building

The next question was whether his concrete would hold the lift. His barn was built in 2019 with a 4-inch slab, fiber-reinforced, poured over 4 inches of compacted rock. That is the middle of the acceptable range for a 10,000 pound two-post, and we verified it by looking at his original pour paperwork before we drilled anything.

What we adjusted was the anchor placement. His slab had control joints on 12-foot centers, and one of them ran directly through where the passenger-side column would land in the ideal geometry. We shifted the column line about 14 inches east so both column footprints sat clean between joints, then confirmed the drive-through width was still workable for his cars. Six 3/4-inch wedge anchors per column, drilled 5-1/2 inches deep, torqued to spec. That is the anchor pattern we use for every commercial-grade two-post we install, and it is what keeps the columns from working loose over years of cycling. Cutting corners on anchor placement is the single biggest reason we get called back to move auto lifts installed by other outfits three years earlier.

The First Transmission Drop

Six months after his install, the collector called us to say he was about to pull the transmission out of his Chevelle for a rebuild. He wanted to know if the lift arms would clear the trans crossmember, because his shop manual showed the crossmember pretty deep in the frame. That is the kind of question we would rather answer in advance than after somebody strips a stud.

His Rotary SPOA10 came with three-stage front arms and two-stage rear, and we walked him through the low-pad configuration for a Chevelle body. He set the pads about six inches inboard of the factory jack points, cleared the crossmember by about four inches, and had the trans out in a Saturday afternoon. He sent us a photo of the transmission jack sitting on the shop floor with the Chevelle high overhead. It looked exactly like what he wanted when he called us the first time. That is the moment where a well-planned lift install pays for itself, because a bad geometry on a two-post costs you a whole weekend of frustration.

Storage: How He Uses the Overhead Slot

Between service jobs, the top of the lift is where he parks the Chevelle for the season. He drives it up onto the pads with the arms in storage position, sets the primary lock at about 60 inches of underside clearance, and rolls his daily driver underneath. That gives him two vehicles in one bay footprint, which was the whole reason he wanted a lift in the first place.

A common mistake collectors make is buying a scissor or four-post for storage and then realizing they cannot also do service work under the vehicle without moving it. His two-post handles both jobs. When he wants to drop the transmission again, he pulls the daily driver out, lowers the Chevelle to working height, and goes to work. When he wants to store, he goes back up. That flexibility is why baseplate two-post is our most common recommendation for collector garages with ceilings in the 10 to 11 foot range. Getting auto lifts installed with the right storage geometry is much more common than getting them installed for pure service, so we quote for both use cases upfront.

What He Would Tell Another Collector

A year in, we asked him what he would tell somebody else planning the same install. Three things. First, measure the ceiling from the underside of the lowest truss chord, not the peak. Every collector we work with overestimates ceiling by at least a foot until they actually put a laser on it. Second, get the site survey before ordering. The wrong lift arrives, you pay freight both ways, and your install slips a month.

Third, do not skimp on the anchors or the annual inspection. He runs an annual ANSI/ALI inspection through us every spring, which runs a couple hundred dollars and takes 45 minutes. That is his cheapest insurance against a cable fray or a locking latch worn out from six years of daily storage cycles. He treats the lift the way he treats the Chevelle: annual tune-up, honest wear tracking, and no cutting corners. That is why he still has two vehicles stacked in a 30×40 barn on auto lifts installed by our crew, and why we hope the second decade of that lift looks just like the first.

Would We Do Anything Differently

Looking back at that install, the only thing we might have done differently is quoted a slightly higher capacity lift. His SPOA10 is rated for 10,000 pounds, and the Chevelle plus a modern SUV underneath is well inside that envelope. But if he ever wanted to swap the daily driver for a three-quarter-ton pickup, he would be at the edge of the capacity. A 12,000 pound baseplate like the Rotary SPO12E would have given him more headroom for future vehicles.

That is a conversation we have with every collector now during the site survey. What are you lifting today, and what might you want to lift five years from now. The incremental cost between 10K and 12K baseplate is a few hundred dollars on a lift that will last twenty years. Worth thinking about when the plan is set.
